  • These teams should play every year

  • Best Mountaineer game ever!

  • I was on the field and took Joe's hat. Penn State never knew what hit 'em. Let's Goooo Mountaineers.

  • major (baby love) harris my ike he was vick before vick the best passing and rushing qb ever he also was a beast on the bball court and he made it to the ncaa hall of fame a hill district legend elmore square stand up!

  • @TPRATTism Keep Standing!

  • i wish i was alive in 88

  • I remember watching this game and cheering when they tore the goalposts down but in my older age I can see how it was wrong with 49 ticks left. Probably wouldn't have been as bad if it was all over.

  • @bulletstopper636

Why would you ever cheer a bunch of idiots storming the field when the game is in progress?

  • I have the center "T" of that very goalpost sitting right here.

  • no, this video ain't biased....

  • Wow, and it could've been worse. Starting tailback AB Brown was hurt and didn't play. He was better than Johnson and Napoleon.

  • this would be a cool clash to see again. join the BIG TEN WVU!

  • As a Penn State fan I have to say hats off to West Virginia for doing what no other team that played Paterno has done. And that is scored 50+ points.

West Virginia has had some good years recently and I'm glad to see another Northeastern team do well. It's a shame that Rodriguez is a weasel, but things look to be okay with Bill Stewart.

I'd love to see WVU join the Big 10. Or maybe even play PSU in a bowl.

  • West Virginia-Penn State would also make a good annual Border War

  • Also, I know we beat them in '84 to kill that freaking baboon on our backs, but this game was like 42 years of pent up aggression unleashed!!

  • I'd forgotten what a cannon that man had. God, it's good to be a Mountaineer!

  • What a gun Major Harris had! He really was great that year.

  • I was 5 years old and was quite impressed with his arm even then. I was an Irish fan and still am, though :P But Major is the man. No wonder they got to the NC against the Irish

  • This game was just sick! The first half WVU put on a clinic. Trying to run some time off the clock to end the first half, they ran a draw play to Undra Johnson and he went all the way! They beat Penn State like a step child.

  • This is why Penn State won't play WVU anymore

  • @jndanoy Untrue. Penn State also hasn't played Maryland, a team with only one win against them either. It has to do with joining the Big Ten and having scheduling conflicts. JoePa actually suggested WVU as a Big 10 team.

But I'm not going to deny it, although PSU was down in 1988 (lost to Rutgers), this was a huge win for WVU. West Virginia beat Penn State like a rented mule. This was the only time that a Paterno coached football team gave up 50 or more points in a game.

  • Major Harris had a ridiculous arm. I didn't realize how far he could throw the ball. Why was he never a good NFL prospect? Seems like he'd be someone the NFL wants with that arm and athleticism.

  • It is SUCH a shame neither Harris nor Rembert made it in the pros. Those are two amazingly talented players who made some SPECTACULAR plays. Harris had a CANNON of an arm and was at least as good as Vick at that time. Rembert is 6 foot 6 and had amazing speed and great hands. But both shot themselves in the foot with various problems before they could make a pro career, and only live in Mountaineer lore.

  • Was in the stands that day........PRICELESS!!

  • Good memories..my dad and I had season tickets from 83-88, those were some great games. The 88 and 84 wins over PSU and that last win over Flutie were something else..things got pretty crazy!

  • Those were great games and then Penn State went to the Crap 10 and has been running away from WVY, Pitt and other schools in the east ever since.

  • ummm didnt they win this game and didnt they win 4 bowls in 4 years yeah pat whites in miami with the dolphins now is that a sucky team?

  • that's pretty pathetic that you have nothing better to do than talk trash about WVU.

  • SportsUploader88 ur just a little frekin retard that has nothing else to do so shut ur frekin mouth!!WVU rocks and u no it We had to of the best QB's in the frekin nation the maje and white and a whole lot more wat r u an OSU fan? OH!!!......FU!!!!!

  • jealousy is a very ugly thing.

  • try talking to some of the defenders who've tried to catch noel devine.

  • if pat white was west virginias only decent player then wvu wouldn't have won 4 bowl games, although he was one of the best players, wvu has plenty of other decent players including an a defense that is highly underrated

  • My wife and I were there in the endzone and the game was broadcast on CBS . The whole day was a madhouse ...never seen anything like it before or since

  • Remember this game well, I was there sitting in section 103 row 19, cant remember the seat number. Taped the game and watched it again when I got home. Actually saw myself and my girlfriend at the time, now my wife, in one of the crowd shots.

  • THIS was the best team in WVU history. Yeah coach Rod had a few great ones too, but this1988 team was the best. Imagine if the spread offense had been around when this team played.

  • Major Harris was an incredible athlete. I remember watching this on TV, while listening to Jack Flemming on radio. To me he should have won the Heisman the year after this.

  • what was the final score i wasnt born then

  • 17 14

  • 17 14 ?

  • I believe the score was 51-30 actually because I can remember being in the hospital and watching it from my room. I think WVU lead 41-7 at halftime in that game. Penn State had a bad football team that year! I hate WVU myself but it's nice to hear old Jack Flemming's voice since he also used to call the Steeler games!

  • 51-30. 17-14 was the 1984 final...

  • Ahhh great memories,Jack calling all of our players names brings a tear to my eye.

  • Undra and Eugene sure made up one hell of a backfield.

  • Man, the running backs that WVU has had in the past 25 years or so. Its been amazing and a delight to watch them, even before I became a WVU fan.

  • i just love stuff like this. i was born here in west virginia and i've been a mountaineers fan all my life. thanks so much thebigeastnation. if you have any more wvu football footage from the 80's please let me know, especially if its from a game where the quarterback is major harris or jeff hostetler.

  • I sure do miss you Jack Fleming. You made me feel as if I were in Morgantown watching any game you called on the radio. You are and will always be THE VOICE OF THE MOUNTAINEERS!

    LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Was there that day. One of the greatest days in Mountaineer football history.

  • I do believe this was the last time CBS was there. We got a little wild that day. Fuck CBS and all the band wagon teams. Let's go 'eers!!

  • nah. CBS returned many times after that. CBS use to cover a lot of big east games especially in the later 90s before they went all SEC. Honestly, the only things I watch is ACC and big east football.

  • a piece of that goal post still hangs in crocketts over the bar.

  • Marios...roflcopter

sooo many hazy memories of Mo'town

  • Watched game on CBS that day. Should have listened to Jack Flemming. I knew they were for real that day. Fiesta Bowl Bound!

  • Great team..Harris,Rembert and co. Did you notice on that one pass that the ball flew over 65+yards in the air?! He could throw the ball 75+ on a scramble..amazing arm, amazing athlete. Too bad he was blackballed by the NFL.

  • shit u cant rush the field anymore. if u even think about jumping, they got cops, state troopers, k-9s, and mace waiting for u...

  • I'll bet they were burnin' couches in sunnyside!!!

    and partyin' @ Mario's FishBowl

  • craziness, the WVU offense looks exactly the same today!

  • I was a junior at the time..got to the stadium @ 11am and was like 20th in line to enter. Sat at midfield, 3 rows up to see above crowd walking by. I rushed the field too MJV.

  • Yep, brings back memories. I was there at the game, and still cherish the memory of stomping PSU into the ground. And the party after the game at Sunnyside was good too, lol. The goal post got cut up into pieces, by a hacksaw provided by the cops!

  • I was there that day too.. And rushed the field..

    Joe Pa was SOOOOO mad!

    I'll never forget it!

  • major harris is my QB coach at Brashear HS, where i am a sophmore, and he still has a great arm after all these years.

  • wow, i was only 10 when this game happened, but I remember it. I was excited to meet Major Harris last year . WV still loves him!

  • yeah, caridi is ok, but im still not over jack fleming

  • The good old days. Jack Fleming doing the play by play for West Virginia and the Pittsburgh Steelers. So memorable times.

  • Such a great game...

  • die pigs

  • god, i forgot how great it was to see the goal posts fall at mountaineer field, probably wont ever see that again, undra was a fast mofo..gooooooo eers!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, last time they tried that, a bunch of people took pepper spray to the face. Stupid cops. :(

  • yea did u hop at the va tech game and get sprayed? boy i did

  • Man, that's awesome. Anyone know where I can get Mountaineer schedules and/or film from the '80s?

  • I loved that game
