1) Because of the relative youth of most captive whales, the roots of many of their teeth are immature, which makes a root canal procedure impossible. Instead, using a variable speed drill, trainers drill holes through the pulp and into the jaw via an endodontic procedure called a modified “pulpotomy.”
2) This is an uncomfortable husbandry procedure for the whales, which have been observed refusing to participate by sinking down into the water, shuddering, or splitting from their keepers. After “tooth drilling” is complete, trainers must irrigate (flush) the bored out teeth two-three times each day, for the rest of the orca’s life, to prevent abscess, bacteremia, and sepsis.- Dr. J.Jett / Dr. J. Ventre - 2011.
I think the whale looks happy because he gets his dental work done for free, and because he won't get his teeth drilled, or frozen, etc. I'm feeling a bit jealous.
Why do people play with these killer whales. Just recently in Orlando Florida, a whale trailer at the age of 40 got killed by one of those whales. And Seaworld had the nerve to keep the whale, not euthanize it. That was so stupid. Her funeral was today. R.I.P. Dawn Brancheu
the whale should not be punished for instinct. i'm not saying the death was not bad, it was a shocking tragedy. the whale reacted that way for a reason, therefore we can not BLAME the whale, nor punish it. plus, that whale was known for acts of aggression, it wasn't just a sudden change in behavior.
"I got those I-can't-get-enough-of-brushin'-till-I-get-my-teeth-white blues!" When I was little I thought it was "till I get my teeth right blue". I was like "What???"... My daughters adore this whale!
That's a good point. I guess the only whale that won't bite anyone is Willy the whale from the movie "Free Willy." (If he was a whale that does bite, maybe he would bite anyone except that kid named Jesse (played by Jason James Richter) because Jesse/Jason James Richter fed him, took care of him, and saved him whenever he was about to die.
Kakarot20007 you're one crazy PETA person. What you said was that supposed to offend me? There's something called showers and It's how you get clean. By the way great language and spelling skills people will actually take you seriously of you spell correctly. You're a wanna be peepchick101 so good luck with that.

@mrsdancingqueen0 It should be euthanized.

@mrsdancingqueen0 There is no recorded case of a wild killer whale preying on a human being.

Believe it or not, a "killer whale" (which is actually called an "orca"), ISN'T a whale. It's actually the world's largest DOLPHIN.

A very friendly orca! I wonder how they trained it to allow this.

In the wild humans don't brush their teeth.Why do they need it in captivity?
These orcas don't belong in tiny tanks for our amusement, they deserve to have some freedom in their short lives.

Whoever s/he is, by the looks of the vid, it likes (or maybe loves!) having its teeth brushed. I don't think it came up to do this for a fish.
