@TheRollsen You need a sound card with duel devices for sound playback and sound recording. If you don't have a soundcard that supports that, which it sounds like you don't, you need to get a 2nd sound card, That is the best way to do it.
There are plenty of cheap USB sound cards you can get that will work perfectly for your mic recording.
I have problems staying committed to let's play. I know I'm decent, and I could become great if I actually consistently uploaded and recorded, but I get discourage and lazy, so I'm not producing videos.

i am 13 and when i speak my voice is ok but i did a test with the microphone and it isnt that good should i do it???????and my computer is crap but i found a good old game (commandos strike force) should i lets play that one???????
I actually started a let's play myself but the way I'm recording it is with the 3DS camera and I'm having trouble trying to get the data from my SD card to the computer so if anyone can give me some help I would be thankful if it works and give you a shout out in the next part.
@HedgehogsAreMe Well, if it's a computer game... you can use skype to talk with your friends... just make sure your computer records your mic as well as system audio
I would love to make let's plays. The only problem is that i can't get privacy. I live in a house with 6 other people. I've actually rarely, VERY rarely, seen some good camcorder LP's.
i would like 2 start a lets play for legend of zelda wind waker and i pretty much no all the stuff i need 2 record but im not quite sure wat 2 do about a microphone so is there any way i can just use windows live movie maker to just talk over the video?
@MrLPgamez the only reason you guys might not want to do it is if your voice is really high, i mean my voice is really annoying too but people normally get turned off by kid's voices in these lp's.

@MattyRatty27 The earlier you start the better. A good way to practice is to talk to yourself whilst playing games ALL the time. Hanging out with friends and talking ALL the time whilst playing. Taking into consideration everything this guy said ^^
I try using the normal tools to LP using dazzle, a good mic, keep the game audio, and edit stuff out like Clement said deaths, so I hope I can get better and my DK64 LP is gonna be a bitch -_-
i put my laptop webcam in front of the TV just so the screen fills the screen its ok but you cant hear me so i need to put writing in but i dont know how to put writing into it please help :(
i use an unregistered hypercam 2 and for the audio i put my mouth and a speaker up to my microphone that way you can hear me and the game and if you see my lastist uploads of minish cap remastered youll see the unregistered hypercam 2 banner doesn't show up weird
@Thundercloud94 Well, you know, you have to make a decent amount of videos before enough appear in searches, I suppose. By the way, you're LP's are all fine and dandy, but I have a few gripes. While your voice is certainly well suited for LP's, you're too sarcastic when you read dialogue. Especially Wally, it gets a bit annoying. Also, be more enthusiastic, you're just a tad too monotone. Finally, do something about the frame-rates, please. It would be much more enjoyable if the videos flowed...
@Thundercloud94 ...More easily, as Clement said himself in this video. Otherwise, it's all good, so that's my constructive criticism. Fix all that stuff, and I might subscribe, because you do seem like a good Let's Player, I just need that stuff fixed before I can watch your videos consistently.
If you want to do live commentary with a friend, a great microphone is the Logitech stand-alone mic. You can stand about a foot, foot and a half, from the mic and the sound quality is really good. Costs about 20 dollars on amazon. I use it for my Half-Life LP.
I recommend it.
As for recording, I stick with fraps. It works great for me. It's probably just a difference in our computer's specs. Although, that could change since I've only started let's playing a week or so ago.
You forgot one rule. DON'T START LP'S AND NOT FINISH THEM!!! I've actually ran into a few like that....makes me feel like I completely wasted my time. =/
I totally agree with all the pointers on here, especially the frame rate and the mute music one, latley, just because of that, I can't find any new promising LPers, and find myself rewatching your LPs for the like literally 10th time. I honestly know what are you about to say on some parts already, it's crazy how very limited amount of good video makers are out there.

I have some advice, for anyone who wants to let's play, a decent program that you can get off to start. If you download Pro Caster(search on google) and yes at first you record live, and stream, but since no one watches my streams( -.- ) and if you have a mic(i hope you do) you can record your voice and game audio ( if you set up volume right) and it will go nicely i hope for you, but the problem for me is finding a editing software, so i NEVER EDIT, if you know what im talking of, HELP!

@Overjoyedcheese ... Second the point I made was how noticeable is your age when you comment. I think that the pitch, tone, and accent of your voice is what matters to a lot of viewers. If your mature and you have a non-high pitched voice then go ahead. I cannot assure anything but remember don't give up on a dream, young grasshopper.
@Overjoyedcheese Again it depends. First is how are recording the lp. Use Fraps for 3D games on computer or Camtasia for 2D stuff on computer. For console use a capture card, for more info type in "record gaming footage in HD SSoHPKC" on youtube or something similer and watch the video by SSoHPKC, he'll explain...
But Clement I Disagree In One Point . I Must Not Do My Very Very Favorites Game Because ... I'm going to play Earthbound, and my computer runs the emulator great without lag. Do you think it's still good to use an emulator if you don't have a capture card? Also, should you record WHILE your playing, or add it in LATER?

If you act childish and try to be very carefulnin your diologue then yes you are a child, if you just be yourself and can say more mature comments and not be stupid 'bout things then you could be mature. Hey Clement. Can you also mention to not play a game that you are rusty at because you haven't played it in a while, and then say so in that video!!! Some examples of what exactly not to do on YouTube is like MageBones. Vicious phantom does alright with the commentary... if you can hear it. Both of those people record with a cam. I think if you sent them a personal message, it would help them immensely.
I'm guilty of not cutting out deaths in my Mega Man X2 playthrough (or at least I was until after the first Maverick). I'd love to start doing commentary on my videos (though I'd probably suck initially), but I'm afraid that my mic, being built-in to my laptop, will make a lot of unnecessary noise. It's not terrible, I guess, but still a concern for me. Should I just wait until I can get a higher quality microphone?
Hi Clement. I am going to be doing Let's Play videos in the future. I am planning on playing it live. Is that a bad thing? I figured I would ask you because I think of you as the best Let's Player on youtube, so any advice from you would be great. I want to play it live because I like to comment on things as they happen. I just want to know if you think that's a bad idea or not.
You might not consider yourself the best at this, but I do. Chuggaconroy and cybershell13 may be good, but you are the funniest and best at explaining the game.
About the watermark thing you mentioned, I see a lot of people use fraps to record their games and often I see the framerate bouncing at the edge of the screen. I've got to say it's kind of irritating and fraps do have the option to turn it off.
Hey Clement, I have officially started on my first LP. I posted part 1 and 2 last night. It's definitely a niche title, but it's also a game that's never been LP'd before. Is there any way I could get you to give me some criticism (or the other commentors for that matter)?
Very helpful video Clement. I've done a few test runs of my first LP and I think I'm ready to do the real thing. One thing I do kind of disagree with you on is that nobody will watch 45 minutes of your content in one day. I actually prefer to watch LP's that have already been completed because A.) I hate waiting for the next part and B.) I can watch the entire game in one sitting (if it's short). I've actually watched several of your LP's in one sitting.
There is a problem. I am YOUNGER than 15 and i am doing a lp.the sound is skracky but i AM muture and DONT have a high pitch voise.(P.S. I did subsribe)This makes me very sad.thums up if you have this problem.
Clement, if you've ever watched superskarmory's DS/Gameboy LPs, you'd see that he, although he's using a camera, still gets decent quality (except for New Super Mario Bros.).
My biggest problems I have with some LPs has to be that some cuss like crazy so much that most of the video is them cussing (which is why I unsubscribed to BrainScratchComms). Another problem I have is some LPs talk about their religion and try to force their religion on the viewers (LordVega for example in his Super Mario RPG LP). Another problem I have is people giving no warning for extreme loudness in their voice and talk really loud to the point of not watching more than a minute.
i wish the ds would have av cables all ready i mean really you would think after six or seven years that they would have made them by now (buzzer sound). :(
I've done Let's Plays before but with this video I can definetely improve. I mean, what I've done is good (IMO), but this video can definetely help me improve for Let's Plays I plan on doing in the future.
About intros - what I've done in the past is have video footage for the intro set to music that fits what happens in the video. I only have it up for about 20 seconds anyway.

I'm gonna give you a little tip right now. Fraps records ONLY the games like touhou project 1- 12 or amnesia the dark decent where it opens up the kind of window which basically become it's own screen instead of a window if that makes any sence. So if you haven't tried that you might want to.
Good advice only thing I feel I argue against is I always rather when someone reads the text, less they are being cheesy. Thanks for the tips.

Camtasia can record emulated games quite well, while FRAPS works better for actual PC games, from what I can tell.

If you want to do live commentary with a friend, a great microphone is the Logitech stand-alone mic. You can stand about a foot, foot and a half, from the mic and the sound quality is really good. Costs about 20 dollars on amazon. I use it for my Half-Life LP.
I recommend it.
As for recording, I stick with fraps. It works great for me. It's probably just a difference in our computer's specs. Although, that could change since I've only started let's playing a week or so ago.

I totally agree with all the pointers on here, especially the frame rate and the mute music one, latley, just because of that, I can't find any new promising LPers, and find myself rewatching your LPs for the like literally 10th time. I honestly know what are you about to say on some parts already, it's crazy how very limited amount of good video makers are out there.

I have some advice, for anyone who wants to let's play, a decent program that you can get off to start. If you download Pro Caster(search on google) and yes at first you record live, and stream, but since no one watches my streams( -.- ) and if you have a mic(i hope you do) you can record your voice and game audio ( if you set up volume right) and it will go nicely i hope for you, but the problem for me is finding a editing software, so i NEVER EDIT, if you know what im talking of, HELP!

@Overjoyedcheese ... Second the point I made was how noticeable is your age when you comment. I think that the pitch, tone, and accent of your voice is what matters to a lot of viewers. If your mature and you have a non-high pitched voice then go ahead. I cannot assure anything but remember don't give up on a dream, young grasshopper.

@Overjoyedcheese Again it depends. First is how are recording the lp. Use Fraps for 3D games on computer or Camtasia for 2D stuff on computer. For console use a capture card, for more info type in "record gaming footage in HD SSoHPKC" on youtube or something similer and watch the video by SSoHPKC, he'll explain...

I'm going to play Earthbound, and my computer runs the emulator great without lag. Do you think it's still good to use an emulator if you don't have a capture card? Also, should you record WHILE your playing, or add it in LATER?

Hey Clement. Can you also mention to not play a game that you are rusty at because you haven't played it in a while, and then say so in that video!!! Some examples of what exactly not to do on YouTube is like MageBones. Vicious phantom does alright with the commentary... if you can hear it. Both of those people record with a cam. I think if you sent them a personal message, it would help them immensely.

I'm guilty of not cutting out deaths in my Mega Man X2 playthrough (or at least I was until after the first Maverick). I'd love to start doing commentary on my videos (though I'd probably suck initially), but I'm afraid that my mic, being built-in to my laptop, will make a lot of unnecessary noise. It's not terrible, I guess, but still a concern for me. Should I just wait until I can get a higher quality microphone?

About the watermark thing you mentioned, I see a lot of people use fraps to record their games and often I see the framerate bouncing at the edge of the screen. I've got to say it's kind of irritating and fraps do have the option to turn it off.

Very helpful video Clement. I've done a few test runs of my first LP and I think I'm ready to do the real thing. One thing I do kind of disagree with you on is that nobody will watch 45 minutes of your content in one day. I actually prefer to watch LP's that have already been completed because A.) I hate waiting for the next part and B.) I can watch the entire game in one sitting (if it's short). I've actually watched several of your LP's in one sitting.

Clement, if you've ever watched superskarmory's DS/Gameboy LPs, you'd see that he, although he's using a camera, still gets decent quality (except for New Super Mario Bros.).

My biggest problems I have with some LPs has to be that some cuss like crazy so much that most of the video is them cussing (which is why I unsubscribed to BrainScratchComms). Another problem I have is some LPs talk about their religion and try to force their religion on the viewers (LordVega for example in his Super Mario RPG LP). Another problem I have is people giving no warning for extreme loudness in their voice and talk really loud to the point of not watching more than a minute.

I've done Let's Plays before but with this video I can definetely improve. I mean, what I've done is good (IMO), but this video can definetely help me improve for Let's Plays I plan on doing in the future.
About intros - what I've done in the past is have video footage for the intro set to music that fits what happens in the video. I only have it up for about 20 seconds anyway.

I'm gonna give you a little tip right now. Fraps records ONLY the games like touhou project 1- 12 or amnesia the dark decent where it opens up the kind of window which basically become it's own screen instead of a window if that makes any sence. So if you haven't tried that you might want to.
