I absolutely love this song. I may be 31 years old and this song is alot older than me, but I grew up with artists like this playing. This is when music was music.
There are so few soul singers who had that rare combination of artistry and raw power in their singing. Wilson Pickett was unique, and only James Brown, Johnny Taylor and maybe someone like Syl Johnson in his HI Records days came close.
His legacy is cemented as one of the GREATEST SOUL SINGERS of All Time ..Wilson Pickett . His Talent , Voice , Charisma , Electrifying performances is simply unsurpassed . ... and the cat let people jump on stage , many times , how cool is that .
Four dislikes? How could anyone not love this song? Dead people move their feet when they hear this song . I'm an old ,fat white guy and I feel like dancing right now. Wilson Pickett lives on. I have an old juke box with this song in it and I play it so loud the windows shake.
@joeytwosubs I'm an old, overweight white chick & brother I'm with u all the way!!! Remember the old days when we could dance up a storm?? I also entertain the neighborhood with great, loud music.....never a complaint.
It saddens me that artists like Wilson Pickett are now gone forever, but I am grateful that they were recorded by people farsighted enough to see and appreciate their talents. Good things stand the test of time, and long after we're gone, people will be appreciating this groove. That's as close to immortality as any of us gets, at least on this earth...
@fuzzman1000: No... Jerry Wexler, the famed Atlantic Records producer and co-owner, came to Memphis with Pickett, and send him and Steve Cropper - the legendary guiartist for Booker T. and the MGs and songwriter - to a motel room with a bottle of whiskey and orders to write some songs. That gave us "In the Midnight Hour" and a few others. This number, Cropper wrote with fellow Stax legend Eddie Floyd, around that same time.
If this song comes on - I always turn it up... way up!
@mrstanbmw: Thanks for the info... I've loved this song for years, and always wondered who were the gals doing such a fine job in "Amen Corner"... now, thanks to you, I know. Did Patti and the group do other sessions with Pickett or other Stax artists?
I had a great night.. I enjoy soul music to this day and have seen many great sould acts over the years..Another great night was seeing Major Lance when he recorded and album Live at The Torch..In Stoke on Trent, UK..Its Sad that as we grow old the memories fade but "You Tube" brings back some of those golden times, sights and sounds that we all love... All the best to you and yours Moonstar T.C.B. Johnny Lynn
@bonny2go: Major Lance, now that's getting back in the way-back machine! I'm a Chicagoan, so it is particularly tough for me that I didn't get to see any of the great Chicago R&B stars - Mayfield, Butler, Davis, the Impressions, the Chilites, Gene Chandler, et al. I was just listening to a Walter Jackson song the other day... I didn't take the opportunity to see these guys when they were still alive and doing shows, as I ought to. At least I have their recordings....
Sang this with Wilson on Stage at The Dungeon In Nottingham UK in the 60s ..but i got the bloody numbers wrong!!! Great times that will be taken to the grave with me..Thanks Wilson See ya again one day>>>>Johnny Lynn
@vongirlvnpnk: Yep, that is indeed the great Jimi Hendrix... who toured with many R&B greats while honing his craft in the early-mid 1960s, before becoming a star himself. Amazing photo and a great "catch" of such an interesting detail. Speaking of the musicians behind soul/R&B greats, I've always felt that the musicians behind the singers deserve much more credit for the success of a given song, than they often get. The best singer in the world doesn't get over without a hot band.
@GeorgiaBoy1961 Thank you sooo much for the answer :) I was just looking at the slides & I said BAM!!!!! thats Jimi Hendrix he was a very talented young man all the way around. I especially love his blues music some of the songs have deep pain & some have great joy. He left us tooo soon. Once again thank you
Another #1 hit for Wilson Pickett on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 138th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #13 on the Top 40 charts. WP was one of the greatest soul artists of all time. When he sang, you felt it, no matter your race. You don't see that today.
We'll it was a number one hit with the people who like it , so screw the corrupt music and Radio Industry at the time and if America wasn't ready for coffee that black , oh we'll . He was the man and always will be the man . RIP Wilson , thanks for the great music .
@moonstar7 What are you talking about? This song was a BIG hit in Cleveland, Ohio, as was ALL of Pickett's tunes. Color had NOTHING to do with it. For your information I'm so called White and I have the Biggest collection of MOTOWN around, Stop keeping the "race " thing going. PLEASE.
@TheWerewolf64: Many people don't know it, but almost all of Wilson Pickett's great songs were done in the deep south, at places like Stax in Memphis and at Muscle Shoals in Alabama or maybe American Studios in Memphis. The bands on these records were biracial, and including everything from redneck country boys to hip city dudes... but when the light went on, they made beautiful music together. That's true of many other artists who recorded in the south, by the way...
@GeorgiaBoy1961 : Good point, my man. Those cat's left the hangup's of the outside world outside where they belonged. Whether you're working together in a band, or you're a team of waiters in a restaurant, or on a construction crew, negativity breeds contempt.
All those guys were teachers as well as entertainers.

One of the saddest things about loving this music is that I can't go out and see it live from the original artists, just listen to it and toast to that they may not be forgotten.
@commandodude1265 That has to be the best comments that I have ever read about the love of music. With people like you, they will live forever. We will never forget them for what they left us.
@commandodude1265: Well, I just went out to see the two guys who wrote this song perform it this summer. The legendary Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper. Now, I don't know where you live,(I'm in NYC, so I'm lucky) but there are plenty of fantastic performers from back in the day still out there. And in the age of the internet, there's no excuse for you not to check out who's still around.
Soul music meant you could feel the same emotion singer felt because singers had the ability to actually sing. They couldn't hide behind synthesizers. Wilson is a powerful singer. You should see and hear him and others in Only the Strong Survive. Ladies, prepared to drool when you see Wilson. He's so vibrant and outgoing and he really looks great in a silk suit.
I saw Wilson around 67 me and friends skipped school and took an express train downtown NY Wilson and Mitch Ryder were the headliners but Wilson owned the place a Murray the K Show The Who were also billed and a band I'd never heard of but were soon to be huge the Cream We were still dressed "continentl" dress pants pointed shoes knit shirt and black leather 3/4 coat I was the "white boy" in the group it was fantastic Wilson had about 8 horn players keyboard bass & guitar he exuded soul & energy
@ronin599 I should have said Irish as in NY if you don't look Italian you're Irish don't make any difference if you're German French whatever and with blonde hair and blue eyes I sure didn't look Italian by the way Wilson had one white horn player everybody else was black They swung with the rhythem body and horn although the white guy didn't move as much it was a funny thing but true
@moonstar7 Hiya hun, What a great pleasure my inner emotions experienced when a very good friend told me she had read this comment left by yourself.. My father was the lead singer of the almost blues .. he passed away in 2008 and he would have been delighted at your comment. Godbless you xxxx
What most don't understand about playing popular music is it's really all about playing rhythm and keeping time. This song is a perfect example -- the band jumps in on rhythm from which all else emanates.
I didn't realize how good this song was until I started playing it..... such a wonderful groove... when you play it one can easily understand how Motown and songs like these had a powerful influence on the emerging rock/pop bands and artists rising out of England and the USA
Eddie Murphy reminds me of an older version of Wilson Pickett. Eddie did an excellent job in Dreamgirls. Now, back to Wilson. Any Hollywood producers out there, get Eddie to do Wilson Pickett!!!!!!
Wilson Pickett is the only artist ever to record with 2 of the greatest acts in the world has his background singers: 1) "634-5789" which was recorded at the then Atlantic-distributed Stax, features Patt LaBelle & The Bluebelles; 2) "The Swim," released on the rare Lupine, features original lineup of the then female quartet The Primettes aka Diana Ross & The Supremes, which are heard in the last minute of The Falcons' classic recording, doing a call-and-response with Pickett. How cool is THAT
I will NEVER FORGET when I was 'on the air" at WING in Dayton,Ohio in 67-68 the station did a show at HARA ARENA with Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels AND
Wilson Pickett,,,I MC'd the show WOW did Pickett tear up the crowd.
Thanks for sharing this. What an awesome tribute to the Soulful and Legendary Wilson Pickett. Ebonically speaking, it didn't get no better than Wilson Pickett when I was growing up in High School. This was my favorite. I thought he was the finest man around. I guess all of the others did too, that's why they bought his music. LOL!!!
The late great Al "TNT" Braggs use to tell the stories of his adventures with Pickett while on the road touring. Happy Birthday!
@kayefullylove i didn' know al tnt braggs died. i used to listen to him on KKDA in dallas. is that where i know your name from because it sure is familar to me.
Most people forget or don't realize Hendrix played for the royalty of r&b/soul before his worldwide fame. Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Pickett, Isley Brothers, Chuck Jackson, Jackie Wilson, etc.,
The place.. The Dungeon Club Nottingham.. Home of the Notts mods.. Back in the early 60s i sang this number on stage with Wilson just before it was released in the UK.. The problem was i was a young and pretty nervious at being on stage with a great guy like him.. i got the numbers wrong!!! Well i will always remember them and him as ONE OF the BIG soul daddy OF ALL TIME. My thanks to all the great soul men and women from the U.S. you gave us so much joy .KTF....Johnny Lynn
wow you actually sang with the great and wicked wilson pickett did he sound as good on stage as on here sometimes studio recordings sound better and thats how remember growing up in thelate seventies early eighties a little late but he and solomon were always my favorites thanx for sharing man

Eddie Murphy reminds me of an older version of Wilson Pickett. Eddie did an excellent job in Dreamgirls. Now, back to Wilson. Any Hollywood producers out there, get Eddie to do Wilson Pickett!!!!!!

Do the x Factor generation even know what real music is??
Pickett was and always will be up there among the best.

Most people forget or don't realize Hendrix played for the royalty of r&b/soul before his worldwide fame. Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Pickett, Isley Brothers, Chuck Jackson, Jackie Wilson, etc.,
luvureally 2 years ago 2
Very true! Little Richard even fired him for showing up late I believe...
