This was the screen test for "East of Eden", Newman was testing for the role of Aron, which went to Richard Davalos.

Dean was supposed to star in "Somebody Up There Likes Me", but he died before filming started. Newman got the role. Newman had already replaced Dean in a TV broadcast of "Our Town". Although Newman's first film was "The Silver Chalice", it was a box office bomb, and "Somebody Up There Likes Me" was his first major role.

SUTLM also starred Sal Mineo and Pier Angeli.
