  • Gordie you have to love this bear---I know I do!!!! Sweet Bear DM

  • I think Popsicle Bear is telling us "we're not the ocean", even with our hybrids, recycling, and

lame "let's save the planet" ideas really aren't working out too well in the big scheme of things. Those "dumb" animals are smarter than us.

  • Run Gord, run!

  • Is that Gus the polar bear from Central Park ?

  • .. guessing a well fed polar bear from a local zoo.

  • "You're up to my toes."

  • Filmed at the north beach of Buntzen Lake in Anmore, British Columbia, Canada

  • @rlynne223 wow really? i live right close to there. i figured this was for sure in ontario.

  • stupid polar bears, always gettin in the way

  • @babysmur69.....check yer facts.

  • fuckin a...awesome tune

  • Great song, love the video

  • Woo CANADA!!! YOUR NOT COMIN INNNNNNNN!

  • Comment removed

  • the bridge in this video looks like the capilano suspension bridge in north vancouver

  • That's exactly what I was thinking!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Was this shot in BC?

  • This is obviously an actual song, I listening to it right now. Why would you believe it to be a myth?

  • your stupid

  • hey look its Gus the polar bear from Central Park

  • haha ik thats the first thing i thought

  • New Brunsick, big fan. Amazing song.

  • it is about global warming, the video is about the polar bear warning him of teh impending warmth. anyone notice its in a FOREST? and when he looks at the emlting icesicles?

  • is this song about global warming

  • great song!

  • a huge fan from thunder bay luv the hip first heared then in fort erie ,ont

  • This song really reminds me of me ex-boss. She could take my paychaque but she couldn't take my love for other things, such as great music and talent. My boss is not coming in...

  • hippys rule peace

  • The Dope Jump On The Bridge Is The Best part Of the video

  • its gus! lmao

  • That's an awesome video. Love the bear. But these damn non-hippies are implying that Hybrids don't work well. Go vote for Bush, ya non-tree-huggers!

  • Hybrids really dont work all that well they are very unreliable and under powered, plus there ugly. The Chevrolet VOLT is the real break through here.

  • Love Gord's facial expression at 1:46.

Keep runnin' 'cause Gus is comin'!

  • wow people are actually reading into the songs and not insulting.

  • amazing

  • As I said before, who cares about the content of the video...it's the HIP rockin' out in this rockin' tune. Hard as FUCK!

  • its not a polar bear its a rare kermoede bear from British Columbia's coast

  • thank you! some who finally knows the difference...

  • Bullshit. That is obviously a polar bear, lol.

  • ya, it's Gus...lol

  • lol Gus The Polar Bear was a metaphor for America And Its Agression.

  • gus rules. but americans kind of suck. trust me, i am one. if our government weren tsuck cock tractors, we'd be way cooler. im close enough to the border where i can feel canadian anytime i like. lol.

  • hybrids suck just make electric there powerful and they dont polute... fucking oil companies

  • the tragically hip rock!!

  • I didn't actually understand the symbolism of the bridge, anyone care to explain?

  • well this is just my own interpretation, but I think the bridge is meant to represent the dividing line we create between man and nature, or culture and nature. It creates a false dichotomy, becuase man is really an intergrated part of nature... we can't run away from nature, becuase we are nature, in a sense. We are just one more species on the earth.

  • this must of been filmed in " The Best Place On Earth" none other than British Columbia

  • I love this song, but this video is another example of The Hip making decisions that turn off audiences. The images don't fit the music at all, and I can't imagine anyone finding this interesting. They've had good videos, but this one is weak and doesn't do this great song any justice. Maybe Bob Rock should have produced their videos too.

  • i'm sorry, but you are wrong

this video is a small masterpiece

pay attention to the small details--the melting icicles, the bridge (and the accompanying bridge symbolism ) and the iconic polar bear...

lastly, watch the expression on Gord's face and the darkness of teh "safe" house he runs to

this is one of their BEST videos

    honest to Goddess...

  • At this point, I doubt the Hip really cares what mainstream audiences will like. After this long, they've done just fine sticking to their own ideals and content. I really like the video, and I find it hard to say the it doesn't fit the music, 'cause it's hard to know what the song really means.

  • This song fits so many things. A person trying to take over your soul, a corporation trying to bind themselves to you through benefits. It means more now than it ever did.

  • Chuck Norris is a dick

  • Rock On!

  • THIS VIDEO FUCKIN ROCKS

  • Who cares about the details of the video, this fuckin' song rocks! Good Canadian kids (in the words of Don Cherry)!

  • Just wanted to set everything rught. The Bear WAS real and Im looking at her right now. Im am and was for this project, the asst. bear trainer. So they can be trained and she was actually there with Gord. BTW, she misses Gord!!

  • i dont believe you if your a assistant bear trainer im the king of the world lol by the way tragically hip kicks fuckin ass good shit guys.

  • I believe you BT - females are larger than males right? How old is she, what is her name? Does she have a younger sister - whoops - did I just say that - never mind - ha ummmm...(nervous silence) ah well then good luck with that bear training thing then.

    Thanks,

    Yogi

  • look out for the bear gordie aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

  • I get it .i tink

The hip are only gettin better.

    Luv the Hip

  • Gordie's heart must be a carmalized onion.

Gus has never looked better - I think he just wanted an icicle - he probably misses Churchill.

  • why would his heart be a carmalized onion....

  • TS:

Just looked like to me that that Molly was so very attracted to Mr. Downie that his heart was a carmalized onion to cause her to persue him so.

    Yogi

  • Gus was just thanking THE HIP for sharing his misfortune with the world

  • I am currentlyl working on a TV series with the director of thisvideo. The bear was real. It is Buntzen Lake. The bridge is at the lake there.

  • At first I thought, "Oh great, they sold out to Honda," and then it breaks down.

    Go Hip!

  • Love this song! Love the idea of the vid being outdoors. Bravo guys!*

  • Reminds me of Canada

  • yay canada

  • The Hip are the ship when it comes to the ocean.

  • So far I love everything the hip does and this song is no exeption. Heard it already in 2006 when they played it live in Amsterdam en Utrecht. Gonna see em tomorrow in Amsterdam again.

  • rock on! XD

  • this is my favorite song!

  • Deadly song

  • Gus:The Polar Bear from Central Park is the coolest polar bear i've ever heard of

  • Also to understand the video you need to be a fan.

The bear is Gus: The Polar Bear from Central Park

  • Love the band.

    Love the Gordon.

    Love the video.

  • hip rule. this vid sucks

  • The Tragically Hip Canadas best kept secret

  • hah runing from a polar bear arent you hot supposed to run for them?

  • I like this song

  • Excellent tune by the hip but I don't get the video.

  • I am the Ocean, FYI

  • ur moms a whale right?

  • cute

  • really? vancover? looks like north of thunder bay eh? looks like northern ontario near manitoba around where the forest meets tundra...

  • /\/\/\/\HI/\/\/\/\

  • interesting note...this looks like it was filmed at Buntzen Lake north east of Vancouver, Canada. The bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge and the "cabin" is actually fake and was built to film the move "Lake Placid", also filmed on and around the lake.

  • it probably was filmed there

cause they r a canadian band

  • there isn't anyway you could guarantee truthfully, that the bear was there, randylangille. some polar bears appear tame, because they cohabitate with humans, for instance, in manitoba dumps, but they can't be trained. not the point, anyway. however, i'm willing to consider your "guarantee", if you want to try to prove it.

  • there's no such thing as a trained polar bear, they're too wild. as far as the global warming theme, maybe the video is trying to show that trying to reverse the effects is just as harmful as what's already happened...human manipulation may only bring other unforeseen problems. but, having said all that, i actually related that video to relationships, too! oh well

  • nice

  • I love this song it is so cool

  • If anything, Nabokov's statement at the beginning is the jist of humanity against nature.

  • If anything the Hip should have named the place and day to go to Ottawa & Washington and tell them what we think of BIG OIL and all the other BS that keeps us up @ night.

  • I agree Therealdarklock. Mttjmd(?) are you saying the Hip (or Gord) are all talk, no action? Are you saying YOUR the perfect example of an eco activist? I bet you dont even recycle. People ARE changing the ways they live right now. I do belive for the big changes, we will have to take it to the streets like the.."hippies"..did in the 60's.

  • mattjmd; you need to look deeper than whats on the surface. There's much more in the video than what your trivialize.

  • Maybe it's Gus, the polar bear from Central Park haha.

  • lol

  • the tragically hippies! seriously this global warming tree hugging sorry sap hippie protest media/activity has gotta stop. i love the hip, always have always will... but i hate hippies that preach about hybrids and animal extinction! get up and do something other than bitch at others who chose the same as you!

  • wow, that was really lame.

  • It really was.

  • This is the most ignorant statement I've heard in a very long time.

  • and by that I mean mattjmd's on the previous page.

  • if u hate them so much then y the fuck r u listening to them????

or do u like going around and pissing people off to start arguements

  • GORD IS THE MAN!

  • which is not where the capilano suspension bridge is sooo i dunno maybe they have one in a zoo that they used but that dosn't seem likley to me, could be but i dunno....

  • Now i'm no expert on this but just by looking at the video i'm rather sure that bear has to digitally put in I say this because i'm sure the bridge he runs on is the capilano suspension bridge, i'm also sure thats not a polar bear, but infact a spirit bear, or kemodi if you will, and there are only two places in the world you find them and they are both in northern BC

  • Bear was really there. guarantee it

  • the bear was there.

    MAv.

  • I know, Mike C is a good friend of mine

    Randy

  • @TheTragicallyHip lol. fail. they should have gotten a species that actually lives there. polar bears go with the snow.

  • @babysmur69 complete fail

  • @babysmur69 The whole video is a metaphor for global warming and nature telling us we are fucking it up. The Hip have often used symbolism in thier songs and vids. This is an amazing vid with a strong message, if you bother to look and comprehend.

  • good song

  • No, it's an 800lb female Polar Bear named Aggie.

  • no, its a spirit bear, not a digital bear found only in B.C

  • As an American, it totally blows the mind that the Hip never (or haven't yet)really broke in the US. Great video, great song, and best thing from Canada since hockey.

  • "trouble in the hen house" was written specifically for the US. Ahead by a century was their hit there.

  • lol

we also have mike myers, and jim carey

  • lol, we dodnt have mike myers and jim carey thank god

  • Yeah instead you have rap and selfish immature bitches like Lidnsay Lohan and Paris.

  • Damn I can't to see these guys live

  • lol that bear is not digital you idiot

  • It looks inserted, pardon me. you don't have to be such an ignorant prick about it. God forbid you ever make a mistake.

  • Britney Invisible is a term used by sailors, it has nothing to do with Britney Spears

  • The video was filmed in North Van, judging by the use of the Capilano Suspension bridge. So the bear is digitally inserted. As for the funding question, if you look at the credits at the end, it states that it was indeed filmed with a grant from VideoFACT, The Video Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent. So it didn't get THAT kind of funding (ie-lobby groups). BTW, Priuses do break down, and when they do, engine replacements can cost up to 5,000 bucks. Just something else to think about...

  • Actually, the bear is really there on location with Gord!

  • That's not thэ Capilano is it? I don't think thэ bэar was digitaly insэrtэd эither!

  • i love this song!!!!

  • Dont fucck with gus!!!

  • Das Hip Rules! Nice to see a music video that tells a story and makes you think!

  • see thats what happens when you drink the water from the great lakes ya start seeing polar bears great video

  • first - do you know what brittany invisible means? well brittney spears is far from invisible but it's about how tourists destroyed the coast of France. Dunes, which account for 13% of the Ille et Vilaine north Brittany coast, France, were degraded by high tourist pressure - and the cliffs are made of pink granite. imagine how beautiful it would be watching the sunset on pink cliffs.

so brittany invisible, to me, means that so many people had walked all over them, that they disappeared.

  • i wish i was a bear - then i could be fat and my "lifestyle" meant i lived on meat but it'd be "natural" so no one would look at me like some backwoods retard. i could attack, maim and kill people and not go to prison - and on top of that, everyone would think i was so cute enough to give little plush versions of me to children at christmas that they cuddle against for comfort.

  • Attack, maim, and kill people and then be hunted down and killed, adding to the further degradation of your species. Nice job.

  • you could call the coming of spring, global warming. the icicles melting convince me that it's spring - which means the bear just woke from its winter nap and is hungry as hell! and poor gordie knows it!

polar bears are the poster animal for global warming BECAUSE THEY ARE SO CUTE. even though the adult men often cannibalize their own cubs.

yet they're worth saving - but not drug addicts, welfare mothers, if only they'd become exinct ...

  • the video's theme is global warming - the shot of the word "hybrid" was kind of commercial-close. it's like a public service message so maybe they were awarded funding to do it but i think there's way more going on.

  • Great song, video and message.5 stars

  • The Bear lyrics (why i think the bear symbolizes a dame)

I was first attracted by your scent

Your heart must be a caramelized onion

By the time I saw your flame

it was all over for you and whashisname.

    and at the end:

woke up in the dead of spring

    more hungry than anything

  • okay the other members of the band aren't in it - but they're not doing videos of the band playing with i think is a good idea. this video is a little movie. and i think gordie has incredible dramatic talent and they band realizes that. his expressions, the way he moves - he should me making movies and not just 'at the quinte hotel' - which yinz should check out on youtube 'cause he kicks someone's ass in it! over a poem about yellow flowers in beer. whew hew can't wait to NYC shows!

  • do you think they gave him that car as a promotional ploy? that would rock! you know what's funny? according to the world trade association, canadian emit more greenhouse gasses per capita - in the whole world! but new zealand says they are. australia says they are. like they're competing. but don't worry about global warming - it's happening, but the earth is always changing. we can all still be friends, okay?

  • The US emits approximately 25% of human produced CO2, and the US has only approximately 6% of the global population.

  • it's a love song. the bear is a metaphor for a dame (made to take and take and take) - preying on him during a vulnerable minute - stalking him but not even interested enough to kill him. but - there is no escape. and he says "you're not coming in" but knows there's no way to stop it. he's at the mercy of the bear. no matter how far he runs. i love how something's always chasing him down in the video.

  • Guys! This video is a statement about global warming! Gord's promoting a hyrbid and a polar bear is in a forest - no snow - almost asking for help and understanding!!

  • thank you....someone finally got it....

  • well - the bear looks like the help it's seeking is to tear gordie into bits - rears up like it's going to attack. gordie's the one who needs help - survival of the weakest. and again i think the 'global warming' theme meant they got a grant from canada to make the video. whatever it takes, eh? i just think gordie had a lot of balls for letting that bear get so close! search for bear attack videos on youtube and you'll see why!

did i mention i love you?

  • Very cool song. Very cool.

  • THIS ROCKS!!! Best video I seen from you guys yet. Finally, you found my old Uncle Gus. That scar over his left eye came from a big hockey stick, I didn't know that scars carry over in reincarnation...cool.

    a.k.a Gussy "left-eye" Lopez

  • Wow, that made no sense. Change the setting to Chinatown, and change the bear into a group of Asian teenagers, and you've got In View. That bear was really cool though. Judging by the forest, I may guess that it was a Kermode. I think

  • Gus is the Ocean?! Great Vid!!

    ...see you saturday!

btw...a broke down Prius? doubt it. ;)

  • Great song. At least now we know what's troubling Gus. It's Gord's hat!

  • F*ck what an atrocity---could this video be any more heavy handed?! Nice hat though.

  • ye hip

  • As a hip fan for 12 years now..seen them 11 times live.... That video fucking sucked. It made no sence...and the use of the polar bear wreaked of Lost. The ending made no sence...and the focus on the ice at the end was straight out of a highschool art calss viddie.

  • Guys! This video is a statement about global warming! Gord's promoting a hyrbid and a polar bear is in a forest - no snow - almost asking for help and understanding!!

  • The video and the new CD rocks ! You guys sounded great on KBCO Studio C live a few miutes ago in Denver/Boulder and you will rock TONIGHT at The Gothic...See you in a few hours !!

  • save the planet, and you will save the bears! stay hip!

  • What's troublin' ya Gus???

  • Save the humans!

great video and look forward to seeing the lads in Boston April 20th! Greatest live band on the planet!

  • can someone please get gordon downie a cell phone? he could have called for roadside assistance - and in the other video: "in view" the poor man is hurting for a cell phone. do they have cell phones in canada yet? i just worry about him!

  • LOL! Ok, that made me laugh... good point, kjokramer! :)

  • That's why he tried to steal one in the In View video, he knew he would need an Asian Cell to go with his Asian car.

  • I love polar bears

  • Polar Bears look like they smoke.

  • Fuckin' Phil eh lol

  • Save the polar bears!

  • Love this song and love this album. You guys rock!

  • Its gus!!! Oh how we missed him :-)

  • Maybe the bear just wanted a Coca-Cola. Don't the other band members appear in videos anymore?

  • That's not Gus, it's Langois in a Bear costume!
