I have driven a Lamborghini Countach former Le Mans racer around Silverstone and a Diablo in Donnington Park in England and at the time there was someone with a XJR15 and he offered me a drive. The the Lambos handled like a pair of pig bollocks, tight and firm. The Jaguar handled like a pig! A stunning looking car, not much go. Its a shame really and improvements can be done to make them better.
Ah, the typical american car video: A great car, a lot of idling and some sub 15 mph navigating on and off a trailer and doing low speed parking maneuvers..
You had an awesome car at a legendary race track, would it kill you to do a single lap at a reasonable speed and lets us hear the car roar by? That car is build for speed, stretch it's legs a bit, will you?
Come Tata/Jaguar make a Le Mans winning supercar, like the XJ220.The 220 should've had the XJR-12 engine in it, with about 750bhp & probably equal torque. That v12 doesn't need to be force fed & the same if you peeps there make a new v12 of higher pedigree. What about a replacement XJ220 eh, don't use a rally car engine this time round ok pleeeease.
Incredible sound. Only 47 made. Well 50 but 3 are rotting up in the Brunei royal hangar.
One was sold in late 08 for £150K so it aint cheap, but that amount isnt all that superfarfetched so with 10 yrs of savings might be viable for regular taxpayers("might" :)).
Still a fabolous dreamcar and very little known in the press, even back then.
That thing is an awkward device, but it has the most wonderful sound, like the sound that you are going to die. TO DATE I have never heard a car that makes my hair stand up. I don't care if it handles like crap and it cost too much to make., or if its slower than an F40. I want it! NOW!
The XJR-15 weighs less than a VW Golf Gti (of its time) and came out in 1991 not long after the XJ220 to beat the McLaren F1, not bad for an 18 year old super car. Off the line 0-100 all the late 80's to early 90's super cars are quicker than to days hyper cars but their a lot more work to drive
well in the past year they have created some way better shit than when ford owned them. theyve gone from old mans car to sports cars that a 25 year old would want.
I'm 25 and own an XK8, so I think I can weigh in here. Good things when Ford had them: Creation of the XK8/R and greatly increased reliability. Tata's ownership: the amazing 5.0 V8, the ugly new XJ (the old one was 10x better), and the XF (which is pretty nice) Advantage: Ford (but not as much as I initially thought)
i think the new jags have evolved this past year beautifully. i cant remember jaguars having any new body styles in the past 10 years with ford. what is the luxury car the S type?? its looked the same for the past 8 years. until tata came in.
Man, Idon't care if these cars were a flop. They just look and sound so damn great. And the prices these days are really reasonable, even though only 50 were made, around 155,000 USD.
One of the most beautiful cars ever made. Stunning Peter Stevens' design (alongside his McLaren F1).
But, as said, a pig to drive. An acquantance of mine bought a blue road-legal one from a private Japanese collection. This guy can drive (having 2 Formula One Ferrari's, an FXX, F40, several(!) XJ220's, etc. in his 'stable') He kept it about a month. It was waaaaaaaay too scary to drive on the roads.
@ABisopht I saw one in Classic & Sport Car Magazine for sale Recently & other Prior to that (the one on Sale was a MINT CONDITION EXAMPLE!!, [Garaged almost all of it's Life]),
I'm more Interested in the "XJ220" myself but if i Was to List which Jaguar's i would want Most the XJ220, XJR15, 1989 XJS/XJRS V12, XFR & XKRR WOULD Be at the top,
Just felt that i should point out to any "Anti Thatcherites" that if it not for her Saving Jaguar from B.L. in 81 they would have Died with Triumph & Rover.
In the 80`s and the early 90's awesome supercars appeard. This is one of them. The engine is the same 6.0 V12 than the Jaguar XJR9 winner of 1988 24hLeMans but with less power.
innotech is right, the car was criticised for its unpredictable on limit handling. TWR offered to build the car for jag as a production supercar, but jag made the xj220 themselves instead. Thats why there are only a few of these xjr15s. Awesome car though!!
This car is ridiculously gorgeous, but the engine was mounted too high up on the car, throwing off its low centre of gravity that most supercars have, and require in order to hug the corners and achieve grip. Race cars has shorter gears and more power, which was apparently more than this chassis was designed to handle since it was originally supposed to be a roadcar. So now its a car that cant handle the corners or get good grip on the tarmac. Its a disaster. but such a pretty disaster.
Yeah that's why Mercedes and BMWs are known to deliver 300K+ miles and British ones rust before they leave the factory.
Despite it's supposed poor handling, that car is absolutely gorgeous. So what if it doesn't corner well? Supercars were meant for high speed straight runs anyway.
sorry to frown on it but it was one of the biggest disasters in auto history. This car has no balance at all. Jaguar lost a lot of money with this one.
This car is featured in this month's Makes and Models Magazine (see makesandmodels dot com) - we were at Daytona for the photo shoot - not allowed to go fast!! :'-( It belongs to a member of our Jaguar Club of Florida - see catdriver dot org
All the more reason to join, we have three of those in the club, too. I drove one and LOVED it. Super car, and really a treat. If you need any help with those details, let me know. My friends have been through it and I hope it all goes smoothly for ya.
how do you think prices will go in the next 20 years? I predict they'll only increase in value, since they've depreciated an astounding 800,000 from the sticker price! Enjoy the car; this might be one i'll never get my hands on...
gorgeous. This is one of my fav cars, but is the car as difficult to drive as Clarkson said it was in the race car version on top gear? If it is I don't care as it looks saweet
Experts say this has horrible handling!!
Very good engine for a terrible chassis!
