Wilhelm Furtwänglers Bach-Interpretation wirkt auf Zeitgenossen im Jahre 2012 geradezu sensationell neu. Heute wird Bach häufig zu schnell und maschinenhaft gespielt - eben in Analogie zum Maschinenzeitalter.

The greatest shame that Furtwangler did not record more for piano. This is probably the greatest Bach playing I've heard.

Thanks, - didn't know that Furtwangler played the piano. Another pianist conductor was Weingartner, I have rolls of him playing Beethoven's Op.109

An interpretation much more daring than any recording from recent memory. I'm not sure I am convinced by the changes in tempo toward the end, but overall I enjoy and admire it. It's a shame that today's performers are forbidden to offer these kinds of unusual interpretations. Historically accurate performances can be wonderful, but there should also be room for imaginative readings.

Oh. My. God. I've always dismissed Furtwangler's Bach due to his stodgy and lifeless studio recordings, but that solo was fucking amazing.
