  • The greatest shame that Furtwangler did not record more for piano. This is probably the greatest Bach playing I've heard.

    TBT

  • Thanks, - didn't know that Furtwangler played the piano. Another pianist conductor was Weingartner, I have rolls of him playing Beethoven's Op.109

  • I never thought I would be touched by this playing so unusual!

  • Wonderful! Thank you for posting!

  • An interpretation much more daring than any recording from recent memory. I'm not sure I am convinced by the changes in tempo toward the end, but overall I enjoy and admire it. It's a shame that today's performers are forbidden to offer these kinds of unusual interpretations. Historically accurate performances can be wonderful, but there should also be room for imaginative readings.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this TREASURE and warmest regards from the Philippines :)

  • Che meraviglia!!!!!! grazie, buon Natale!!!!

  • AAAA. 231739Z DEC 2010 This is very beautiful indeed, thank you for posting.......AR.

  • Oh. My. God. I've always dismissed Furtwangler's Bach due to his stodgy and lifeless studio recordings, but that solo was fucking amazing.

  • Few pianists have such sensitive pedaling.. It even sounds a bit like an organ!

  • I can't believe it's this good.Revelatory.Tempo tells everything.Very sensitive controlled reading so he kept his fingers in good shape.

  • MY GOOOD!!!!!!! He plays much better than any specialist pianist from today. What a beautiful touching and playing!

    Wonderful!

    Thx!!

  • does anyone know if he's improvising?

  • @essenc82 - improvising his rendition,

    that could be......

Amazingly unusual but definately a genial performance so moving ...a kind of magic all through.

  • Quando la Musica si trasfigura in qualcosa di indescrivibile a parole!!! Commovente, fantastico, paradisiaco...

  • Danke Wilhelm!

  • This is one of the most beautiful recordings I've heard in my life. If you somehow have the complete recording we would be eternally grateful if you share it with us.

  • Thank you so much for this extraordinarily moving and beautiful performance.

  • OMG, Furtwangler played piano as magnificently as he conducted! Bach as music, not sewing machine clatter! Hallelujah!

  • What a gem!Do you have the complete recording?
