An interpretation much more daring than any recording from recent memory. I'm not sure I am convinced by the changes in tempo toward the end, but overall I enjoy and admire it. It's a shame that today's performers are forbidden to offer these kinds of unusual interpretations. Historically accurate performances can be wonderful, but there should also be room for imaginative readings.
This is one of the most beautiful recordings I've heard in my life. If you somehow have the complete recording we would be eternally grateful if you share it with us.

The greatest shame that Furtwangler did not record more for piano. This is probably the greatest Bach playing I've heard.

Thanks, - didn't know that Furtwangler played the piano. Another pianist conductor was Weingartner, I have rolls of him playing Beethoven's Op.109

Oh. My. God. I've always dismissed Furtwangler's Bach due to his stodgy and lifeless studio recordings, but that solo was fucking amazing.

Few pianists have such sensitive pedaling.. It even sounds a bit like an organ!

I can't believe it's this good.Revelatory.Tempo tells everything.Very sensitive controlled reading so he kept his fingers in good shape.

OMG, Furtwangler played piano as magnificently as he conducted! Bach as music, not sewing machine clatter! Hallelujah!
