The University of Hawai'i is famous (and rightly so) for their English language productions of Asian Theatre, both classics and new works.
For Chushingura we learned all of our lines first in Japanese, so we could work on the correct Kabuki vocal patterns, and then re-learned the play in English trying, as best we could, to adapt the Kabuki vocalizations to the English language.
This year UH is doing The White Snake (Chinese) and next year The Vengeful Sword (Kabuki).
You are most welcome!
