Yeah, Rhizopas is a boss... You can observe in the Bestiary List (283-Tunnel Armor/284-Phantom Train and 285-Rhizopas)

is it like ff2 advance where you level up skills or do you gain exp?

EXP, but to learn magic you use Espers.

After get the Espers, they give you a bonus when equipped (Exemple: HP+30% / Strong+3 / Magic+20%...)

When I was doing that part fighting those multiple Opinicus fish I expected a boss to show up and I was right it was Rizopas. Nice work man cant wait for the next boss fight 5/5
