I was with the 1/10 air cav in An Khe 70-71 . About the middle of 71 we moved to Lane Base near Qui-Nhon. We lost a few at An Khe when sappers came through the wire and blew up the motor pool and the church. I was on flight line guard duty that night. VC was shooting rockets at us from VC hill but our choppers got off the ground and pounded the top of the mountain. I was a 45-M armament mechanic. Did alot of drugs while I was there. Came back to the states a damaged man. Vote for Peace!
I'll NEVER say the communist "won", we were forced to pull out by our incompetent leaders, fire zones an no fire zones, who ever heard of such shit, if the military was allowed to do their job it would have been a much different outcome, how can any army win a war with their hands tied behind their backs?? I was there, and I'll never forget...
My father was with the 1st Cav when Tet began. Demo specialist at PK-17 to be specific. I just spoke with his former Lt. last year and he told me the stories of PK-17 and TFP. I finally understand his pride in Garryowen.
I remember them well. Col Gude was outstanding, and so was his staff. We all work'd
together to make a great unit. Capt Israel was a great guy,and a good huey pilot. Enjoyed flying with him from An Khe,to Bong son. He was my Boss. Your couldn't
ask for a better man then LTC Graft. Also the LTC in our unit.
Yeah! I spent a week there in travel some time in 1971 as they were closing it down. The only ones left were the MPs and a few others for guarding. We were on constant alert due to the decrease in personal and activity in the hills. Had to travel about 60 miles when we left there to get to my next camp with only one incident.
Our country was occupied by Americans and Vietnamese had to live in very bad conditional for a long time. we fought to the last and as you can see, we had won. Justice always wins. The territory of Vietnam belongs to Vietnamese, and we're proud of our country.
p/s: I'm living in An Khe now. And it's been changing so much...our country's been developing day by day.
My Uncle was 1st Air Calv. in 1967-68 - Thanks for up'ing this. He has some slides and recordings of missions, but never seems to be "in the mood" to bring them out :)

Just reading ChickenHawk by Robert Mason, who describes his time near An Khe in the 1st Air Cav. and flying slicks to the hot LZs :)

The 227th,228th,229th, and gary owens came under 11th AVN grp. Your right
about all hell broke loose. Tet was a night mare for all who were there. They hit
our gas point, and ammo dump. The rockets red glare, bombs bursting all around.
Lost only one guy due to this action. We knew it was going to happen thanks to
intel. I doubt that I met your father in such a big division.

What was your fathers unit at Camp Evans From January to march 1968. I left in
March of 1968. We came under attack with rockets in January. I was also in the
a shau valley. Maybe the United States should look to Viet Nam as neighbors
build relationship rebuild our navy base there along with businesses. I trust
the people there more then Iran with it's clown at president.

This place brings back memories. Was there in march 67 until we moved up to
camp Evans from Bong Son in dec 67. Was in 11th AVN GRP. Any body remember
Co. Gude or Capt Israel or LTC Graft, and two of the greatest CSM I ever had the
pleaser of filling sand bags with. Thanks for posting. 1st CAv Division will always be
a great division then and now.
