What a stinky commercial. If that crud influenced a thousand voters, it probably pushed them to Ike! Which is too bad, because Ike's running mate was Dick.
For everyone saying this ad is corny, its not as if Eisenhower's ads were as sophisticated as today's ads. In 1952, TV was still fairly new and commercials in general were definitely not as sophisticated. They usually just had a jingle or just had some pitch person give a straight pitch.
Stevenson was one of the finest men to run for the Presidency and lose. He was a true gentleman and statesman in every sence of the word. He would have made a great President. ALL THE WAY WITH ADLAI!!!
what a ridiculous ad. If I were alive in 1952, I'd be pretty irritated that none of Stevenson's ads seem to actually tell us where he STANDS on the issues! I don't want some silly jingle. I wanna know his POSITIONS. People really voted like this?? Just buying into ads of their favorite candidate that looked good and voting for them based on party? I'm so glad people are far less party-attached and more Independent nowadays.
But a real voice, a real mezzo-soprano, on the breath, clear as a bell, ringing, with chiaroscure and with warmth and vigor. Qualities you would not hear in modern advertising. Wow, how things have degenerated in many way in TV-land.
Of course, NOT any mention during that campaign of the absolutely atrocious civil rights record of segregationist VP choice, John Sparkman. Oh no...the left made sure that wasn't a topic.
Poor Eleanor Roosevelt--she was ashamed of the choice--and rightfully so..
Whoo689, I'll agree with you on this point, this ad is lacking some important information. If you look at his ads on "The Living Room Candidate" there is one that vaguely talks about his position on many topics. I'll give some lead way to both Stevenson and Eisenhower, though, because this was the first national political campaign to be run with the television as a medium for advertising.
@jazzpot8o The great irony, of course, is that Eisenhower was a pretty sharp dude himself, to the point where you can make a good case that he was more intelligent than Stevenson. And I'm saying this from a center-left perspective.
Adlai Stevenson knew he had no chance against general Ike Eisenhower. The democratic president H.S. Truman was very unpopular at that time and so was his administration.

Don Draper during a booze-and-sex-filled lost weekend could have created a better ad.

During that 1st campaign, a woman reputedly said to Stevenson "I'm going to vote for you... and so will every thinking person in this country."
Stevenson replied "I'm going to need a lot more votes than that."

Adlai was weak and had no chance against Ike. The Democratic Party must have been in rough shape to nominate this stiff twice!

He was just another big-gov't Marxist dipshit from the DNC, following in teh footsteps of failure FDR.

Isn't it a little ironic that it says "a man you can believe in", but the ad doesn't tell us what HE believes in?
