Whoa, settle down. While Bob's original is by far the best version (and one of my favorite songs), you can't hate on Gilberto Gil. He's got the Brazilian samba vibe goin' on in this rendition. It's actually tight, just different is all. Come to think on it, why would someone wanna do another's song without adding a personal context?

I would definitely say this counts as reggae. The chords are all emphasized on the upbeat and the drumbeat is the standard one drop reggae beat.

On second thought, I must concede you are correct though reggae with a uniquely brazilian flavour. However have you watched Gilberto's version of "Three little birds" on U Tube?How would describe that one?

Just checked out Three Little Birds, and although the upbeats are still emphasized and the bass drum comes down on the two and four beats, his choice of instruments definitely make it less of a standard reggae groove. I gotta say though, on both of them I'm really diggin the Brazilian flavor.

This is the only recent Gil that struck me that he was merging reggae and MPB rather than adapting reggae. Until today, I hadn't seen a performance video any more recent than when I saw him live in the late 70's, and I was unhappy he'd assumed mannerisms of reggae so totally. This performance is more heartening. (that was a cavaquinho, wasn't it? And the percussion was right on ...great! Thanks, George!
