  • Yes

  • is the ball 16 pounds

  • wow what a competition.

  • this proves that shotput and discus are more technique than strength. but in this case we viewed an incredible amount of both.

  • This is a good video, glide vs. spin. In this case Ulf with the glide won it, but Barnes ended up with the world record later that still hasn't been beat.

  • hmm this Ulf is quite fast thats probably why he dominated!! i love him! -no homo-

  • great

  • best.shotputters.ever

  • 20 years and the record hasn't been broken! Amazing!!!

  • I think this sentence from wikipedia sums up the event nicely: "The fourth place throw at this competition would have won every previous Olympics in the shot put."

  • Thanks for this vid. I am unfamiliar with shot rules (even though I put). Is this sort of wrist and hand taping still legal for competiton?

  • Is the spin better than the glide or are they just different ?

  • @Church6397 depends on the individual. however, not many do the glide anymore

  • @Church6397 either can be good

  • Greatest shot put competition ever... and the stands are practically empty... :(

  • This Truely is the greatest Shot Put Competition.!!

  • Timmermann was amazing for a guy that weighed 260, so much explosive power and great technique, you dont have to be a 300lb monster!!

  • barnes has got the world record knw :)

  • did anyone notice that timmermann had the greatest height in his throws ? Even his 72ft throw had greater height than randy barnes 73'5 . I think its clear the technician won this match.

  • you obviously know nothing about roids

  • thats stupid. steriods shrink your balls.

  • a day when 72 gave you third, smh.

  • and 70' 2" got you 4th

  • That must have been fucking exciting to watch live

  • he used roids

  • He really did, although he was "smaller" than some of the other throwers, he along with practically all of them were on steroids. All of them were 500+ bench pressers and you can believe their squats were tremendous.

  • ulf timmermann and udo beyer i know squat well in the 700lb range and do believe randy barnes and Werner gunthor did to. but all of them used roids back then. you really couldn't win without them. especially timmermann and beyer were roid taker. Way bigger then barnes was and the other shot putters there.

  • where did you learn about timmermann and barnes steroid usage ? With the way you're talking you could say you administered the juice to them ?

  • it really says something that Ude Beyer was considered strong among shotputters

  • my god 6 olympic records lol

some of the best shot putters that ever lived lol

  • Even though he's obviously not a small man, Ulf actually looks tiny compared to all the guys he beat! I know Gunthor is 6'7" Barnes and Beyer are around 6'4" each. Anyone know how tall Ulf is?

  • Barnes and Beyer are around 6'4'' 300.......Gunthor 6'5'' 285..ulf is only 6'3'' about 260

  • @moneybody1 i remembered watching this on live telecast in 1988. it is very interesting.!!..the video cut short all the tension that was there. Ulf is the only shot putter whom i consider elegantly handsome (being not bulky and big like others). Before the competition, i expect Gunthoer or Alessandro ANdrei to win and Ulf coming 2nd or 3rd. Very happy Ulf won.

  • @moneybody1 I think Ulf is about 6ft 5.

The most amazing thing in shot putting though is Jacko Gill, throwing 18 metres> with the 7.26kg shot at 15 years old and something like 95kgs ...

  • Ulf's arm is corked

  • @jackjolli what do you mean?

  • @ChrisSousa9 LOL i posted that 2 years ago and it just made me laugh. "his arm is corked" like hollowing out a baseball bat and putting a cork inside it. you know like sammy sosa did.. it helps you swing faster, allowing you to hit the ball further

  • @jackjolli oh haha i thought you were talking about his shot placement which is unusually low but i get your logic.

  • nothing spectacular? the previous Oly record was just over 70 feet , then three guys blow past it up to over 73, and just when Ulf thought know one could beat him Barnes comes up for his last throw to improve by 4 feet to take the lead ....yeah you're right , pretty ordinary!

  • Than maybe I'm not the sports biggest fan.

  • no shit!

  • @70footer my friend Tod Davis talks to him on facebook. And yes it really is him cause he puts videos of him throwing now just recent.

  • I'm sorry but you know nothing, Now go away!

  • Go away where?

  • whats glide? ( i know nothing about shotput other than its cool)

  • i beleive its the form that the guy in the blue uses, where he faced fackwards, "glided" on a foot towards the front, twisting into his throw.

  • It's amazing how far Ulf gets on the glide. Our senior thrower at Sartell High School this year got to 53'3 with the glide this year and not many people can say they can throw that far with glide.

  • Well the current olympic record is a glide isn't it. Oh and the all time high school record is a glide by Micheal Carter

  • Four OR for Timmerman...One for Barnes...one for Guntor...amazing!

    What was the previous OR?

  • imagine throwing 72ft and coming in 3rd!

  • Amazing...

  • Timmerman is the man!

  • Just amazing on how timmerman stay cool and calm after barnes took the lead. I've probly watched this event like 100 times.
