I had the pleasure of meeting and co-writing a song with Kin in September of 1993 Just before he left Nashville. That man was full of positive energy.
Do your self a favor and find The last Kenny Rogers and the 1st editions last album,The Ballad of Calico. Mr Kin Vassy sings his butt off. They spent 6 months on that album and it is great. Michael Martin Murphy and Larry Cansler wrote it. Erin was right kin was a huge talent!
If you listen to Frank Zappa's album version of Moving To Montana - Kin Vassy is the one singing the amazing Zippy Yi Yo Tiyaas at the end of the song. He was a fantastic singer/songwriter.
kin vassy was one of the most soulful gifted and generous humans to have walked this planet....he sings his butt off on this.........he was the real deal.......he was way beyond showbiz........you live on in this video, kin-------love yer face!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been looking for a version of this song that stands out, and this one certainly takes the cake. I love how the guy's voice compliments the empress's voice. kudos!
I've been looking for a version of this song that stands out, and hands down this one takes the cake! I like how the guy compliments gladys knight's voice. love it!!
I don't recognize this guy's face or name, but he's incredible. Seems like I should know of anyone who was this good. And Gladys Knight, I remember as being with the Pips. Watching a few of her videos and she's far more significant than I thought. Seems like she may not be getting enough credit in terms of the greatest soul singers of the past. Some other singers who are also brilliant are much more prominent.
Very Good Performance; Gladys Knight is excellent and Vassey is good.Wasn't Ken Vassey in the Kenny Rogers and The First edition Group? Anyway good stuff, thanks for posting it. hartley C.
The ORIGINAL was done by the one and only Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. This is nice tho, cause Gladys is the bomb!! Mary J Blige also did this with Method Man.
I just think this is the best duet I have seen in all of my life. They clicked right around the middle of the song and BANG! Watch out. They were awesome together. How I wish I could see that live here today. Thanks for posting this because it is simply fabulous! I have my kids dancing around the kitchen!
I also had the honor of working with Kin in Nashville. He wrote for a publishing co. where I ran the demo studio. We spent many hours lock up in a small room where he would breath life into his incredable song creations. I never saw anybody who could work like Kin. He would play and sing every part. Sometimes I felt like I was there just to keep him company! But those stories, man, he had a million of them! I'm just proud to add him to my resume of life.
Hey Hassell,.....if a guy today could sing like him,.....do you think he could make it in the music industry still. I'm asking on behalf of myself cause I'd love to try but need to know what people think of my voice.
Kin Vassy was the greatest- he was my uncle and watching this video brought me to tears. He was the most talented and gifted artist - when he walked into a room it lit up... anyone who truely knew Kin, knew there life was alittle better for knowing him. Erin Digby
@ErinDigby26 I can imagine that you're so proud. My boyfriend discovered this duet and went grazy....Kin Vassy sang unbelievable!!!! (x From The Netherlands)
is it me or did she keep looking @ him like "keep your distance"? for them to have been friends she was giving him some hard looks or barely looking at him @ all.
Kin Vassy was my best friend, my mentor and the one man who believed in me the most. After hiring me to work for Kenny Rogers Productions, I had the honor of recording hundreds of songs with Kin Vassy. An amazing song writer and one of the best vocalists in the world, Kin could sing rings around the best! I co-wrote my friends last song on this earth with him. Whenever I face "a wiggle in the road" I remember the encouragement, the opportunity and the love he gave to everyone, especially me.
this is hot. check out the version with patti labelle and that white guy with the very soulful voice [forgot his name, but he can siiing], not mike mcdonald, the boy with the long hair and big nose. it is the all time best.
kin vassy was my first husaand, and father of karla. kenny rogeeers said,"Vassy could sing higher and longer than anyone he ever knew." for those of you who said he was trying to knock her over, you're wrong. they were friends and id think that's the last thing one would think of when singing with gladys knight.
Kin Vassy was my dad. He was part of Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. He was a great soulful singer who loved to sing. I was so surpised to find this video. This is from their t.v. show when Gladys was a guest. He sadly died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 50.
This is the first I have ever seen and heard of himand I stumbled upon this video. I am intrigued and truly enchanted with his voice and soul! I am no actively searching for more of his music. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. HE truly had a gift and it still ives on in those who have heard him sing and those who were fortunate to have met him. Blessings to your family.
Sorry for your loss! He was a heck of a vocalist!! I played some of country recordings on the radio in the early 80s on Liberty Records. They were good!!
Gladys never ceases to amaze me. This duet would be much better if Ken Vassey didn't try to turn it up into the ending so early on. Gladys Knight was awesome though!
LOL...you are right about that. I could see the Empress looking at him out the corner of her eye..."watch it now"! I think his name is Kin Vassey but I MIGHT be wrong. Please correct me if that's the case.
@empressofsoul You had me in stiches with your comment cos I thought the same thing!! I thought he was gonna knock her out with a swift headbutt a good few times...damn!
The man looked like he was going to do something erratic! If I was Gladys Knight I would have said f*ck this and ran! He looks like he might eat her backstage or some sh*t like that!
Respect tho' still I aint EVER heard a white man sing like that! Peace to Kin Vassy.

Can anyone decipher what they are saying between 1:42 - 1:50
Those little ad-lib parts...
Listened so much and can't understand...
katharineannhelkin 1 year ago
@katharineannhelkin The original lyrics that Marvin & Tammi sang went like this: You're all, you're all I want to strive for and do a little more
You're all, all the joys under the sun wrapped up into one
You're all, You're all I need to get by.
But Gladys & Kin are singing something else. I can't figure it out either.
