This is only possible with very gullible, naive, people, or someone who mimics the behaviour of others, a bit like Darren Brown or David Blaine used to do, because to anyone who is self concious this would not work. I'm one of these people, I base my drunkness on how I feel not over how much liquid I've drank. A friend of mine on holiday drank about 10 bottles of this cheap beer and was wondering "Hold on this isn't doing anything" before realising it was only cheap because it was alcohol free.

Happened to me and a mate with a spliff, other guys pranked us and rolled a baccy one with a bit of chilli powder and we felt baked afterwards. Placebo works.

Placebo's are used all the time in double blind drug trials, also the fact we are a VERY social species means that we can literally hallucinate are fool ourselves in order to conform to the social status quo, a bit like when the authority says the red car is blue and you actually see it as blue if the authoritative figure and everyone else says it is.

I read in New Scientist that the body may actually release certain chemicals or proteins when it is repeating a process that has been completed before. I.e Getting drunk... So when the body is tricked and it thinks it is getting drunk, even though it isn't the body may be releasing chemicals that may contribute to the feeling of being drunk.

It's fair to assume that at his age he's almost certainly got absolutely smashed a few times. Don't underestimate how powerful a placebo can be. They are used in clinical trials for very good reason. People can take a lot more pain when they take saline drips they think are morphine. They get knocked out by placebo sleeping pills. They can even stop craving cigarettes after wearing placebo nicotine patches.

the crazy thing is even if you know its not alcoholic the placebo can still sort of work. i was at a restaurant a while back for this girls birthday and they gave the table free bottles of this non-alcoholic sparkling fruit drink stuff. it didn't even taste like champagne, let alone alcohol, but just because it came in champagne bottles and we drank it out of champagne glasses some people got tipsy from it. they'd be like 'this isn't alcholic, why do i feel drunk?'

I did this to all my friends, I said i'll buy the drinks, I went up to the bar, asked for 4 plasaebose, bought 7 rounds of them, I didn't drink coz i told them I would drive us home, they stubled out the bar "drunk", I told them what i really bought them, and as soon as I told them the facts they were sober. It's amazing how easily our brain gets tricked.

its called a placebo and it comes in many forms, all you need to do is make a placebo for the drug or effect you want to stimulate.for example get a cocain addict and give him a substance that smells, feel,looks and taste like cocain even though it isnt and his brain will act as though it is.

thats the effect placebo's have on people ADDICTED or consume alot of a certain substance that gives a repettitive affect on the brain whatever the substance may be. it has been prooven to work repeatedly mostly on addicts and no i have not tried cocaine.

@giantpistol1 I'm not looking a debate, but you are wrong. look up legal highs, when people take them they get the high that the 'simulated drug' should give them, and not what the actual substances should give. I have taken them and the 'actual' drugs and depending on frame of mind, I was able to use them to get high, not all the time but enough to realise what was going on. And if they where giving in the exact form and appearance to an unexpecting party they would most likely feel the effects

I can attest to this being totally true. Was a guinea pig in a similar experiment (with a university). Was fed vodka and lime, had to take tests e.t.c. The sneaky bit of it was that I SWEAR they hired a model to do the interview, rather than use a grad student or whatever. She was like 11/10 for hotness and I reckon they were expecting 'drunk' people to hit on her. I did. I was definitely drunk. Then she told me it was all placebo and it was like 'fuuuu...' I just sobered up instantly. Weird.
