The damn commercial I haven't seen for 20 years..The music video from "Take on Me", that unusual and catching clip always stuck with me the most. I never saw the whole video until a few days ago!
In 1993, CD compilation were popular, only because there were no CD burners to make your own CDs. And you couldn't download music off the Internet in 1993 . I heard that CDs are going to discontinued in 2012.
i had this compilation in 1994. it was 1 of the 1st real good compilation cds of the 80's. unfortunately u buy 1 compilation u get alot of the same songs on them. didn't the 80's teach us about over spending apparently not. look at the mess we are in now.
Before I saw this commercial, I expected Billy Ocean to be Caucasian, and Dexter Poindexter to have dark skin. Great selection, as usually for an 80s CD.
This 1993 compilation was a followup for 'Razor & Tie's Those Fabulous '70s' compilation (which put them on the map in 1991). This compilation ('Totally '80s') was produced by Warner Special Products and aired on t.v. in 1993 (the year of the release of Super Nintendo's 'Star Fox'). Razor & Tie followed this up with 'Awsome '80s (1994)' and 'Back to the '80s (1995).
I don't think so. The early '90s still had that '80s influence in many elements (graphics still rather simple, stuff like Madonna, Whitney Houston, and even Michael Jackson were still very popular when this commercial aired. I didn't REALLY get nostalgic for the '80s until after 9/11, given that the '90s still seemed fair fun and the era really became distant around that time. You need to wait around 10-12 years after a decade ends to really get that "good nostalgia" flavor for it. (90's soon!)
actually, music "videos" have been around since the 1920s. look up "St. Louis Blues", "Show Boat", and "Panoram". the idea of making short movies that revolve around a song is almost as old as film itself.
not all 80s music is crap, I said "Top 40 crap" because so much of what got uber-radioplay was banal and formulaic (sounds like today doesn't it?) but sadly a lot of people are so used to hearing a song they confuse that with actually *liking* it. :p
Gahh, I remember this commercial...since I was born in 85, this commercial and commercials like it was how I first got to know a lot of 80s songs, hah...
Same with me (except I was born in 1980). This commericial sparked my interest in 80s music. (The ones in particular were Tears for Fears, Belinda, Nena)

And in the 80s, communism died and music videos were born out of its stead.

Even by the 90's, we were nostalgic for the 80's.

Great music compilation but it's missing some signature artists like Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, Styx and The Police.

It's nice to see them put a Foreigner song that isn't "I Want to Know What Love Is"
Doobie1975 2 years ago
I'm surprised this collection doesn't feature bands like Hall & Oates or Poison

wow, this reminds me how early 80's nostalgia actually began.
"the decade communism died and the music video was born"

I love Robert Palmer, but does EVERY 80s compilation have to have Addicted to Love on it?
ekkostar 3 years ago
They definitely seem to overlook his other hits, IMO "Addicted to Love" isn't Robert's best song but it is still a good one

Doobie1975 4 years ago
What do all of these songs have in common? They are all top 40 bullshit. I hate top 40 bands/artists, I remember this commercial fondly though.
Communism is still in China, so what that guy said was wrong and music videos have been around since the 70s, just not shown on TV.

RUSH DELIVERY!? Who the heck was in that much hurry to get a load of Top 40 crap dropped on their front step?
(I was born in the early 1970s, btw -- so I recognized not only those songs, but the painful commercial itself ::) )

if its so much crap then why is 80s music still popular??
