you know you're drivin when a fully built block on ITB's is blowin blue, totally agree with your comment on over filling the crank to allow for oil consumption. good vid, awesome shot of the rear undercarriage
Can i just ask why the engine was smoking? i dont kno alot about engines. I've always been told when they smoke like that they are blown..can u please inform me.
@martymcfly001 A little smokey yes, blown no.Could be running the piston to born clearences a little on loose side,or maybe the piston rings arnt properly bedded in yet.I also suspect that this car is dry sumped lots of racing bda powered cars are so they are immune to whiping the oil up like what happens in an overfilled wet sump engine.
@martymcfly001 Also forged pistons have larger piston/cylinder wall clearance when cold. When the engine gets into "race" temperature, clearance is what it should be due to heat expansion, and then it should not smoke, if everything is OK.
@MrColeman92 The valve stem seals can leak oil into the cylinders giving a puff of smoke at gear changes or on/off throttle. Constant smoke would be a sign of overfilled oil or worn/defective piston rings.
@MrColeman92 , Also when building a race engine they are made loose, unlike a recondition when tight tolerances are used for longevity, this one may just be out of race hours but only needs a freshen up.
just seen acomment on here , no engines arnt supposed to burn oil, but the oil ring on the piston crown leaves a thin smear of oil , i mean hardly any to even notice when it moves to tdc , so when the piston moves to bdc its lubed , and its not rubbing the piston liner with bare metal , the smoke here is proberbly on the over run ,
the engine is probly burning a little oil on the over run sum engine builders leave the stem seals off the exhaust valves to minumise drag and sum of the works escorts did have fuel injection on it was a mechanical system type hope this is some help to people.
@ginsterboy- What is the actual definition of "over-run"? And I want to know more about the oil burning. It makes sense to leave the stem seals off to cut friction. There's no way that could affect compression ratio, is there, since the valves are already closed? Some guy below mentioned chromoly piston rings too...I wonder what's with those. It's kind of funny how the best race engines smoke like crazy and barely stay running at idle because the timing. They are built for power...no compromise!
@justforever96 yeah sum of the race engines do use a little bit of oil it can be for a number of reasons they can use oil in the engine is not run in properly from new this is quite hard to do now as most modern oil is very good if run in to steay the cylinder bores glaze and u dont get a proper seal.i have found the best way to run engines in.is on mineral oil few blips up thourgh the gears and back down at 1/4 throttle the double clutch on the down changes.the 1/2 throttle then full.
then drop the oil and put sum good stuff in recomed motul 300v double ester full synthic.ever noticed how some people just thrash engines from new and dont get any problems ?seems a bit harsh the first time u do it but i have built many race engine and this method works.as the oils r very good now adays.you have to make sure the engine is up to temp before you run it in to.yes sum of the race engine are very lumpy low down due to cams and the high lift and valve over lap sum is due fueling thow
@ginsterboy yeah just to run it in not to race on.fully synth is to good to run engines in on you would end up with the bores glazing and then the engne would use oil.thats is why u use mineral and go steady.
@ginsterboy Mineral oil? You mean like "Mineral Oil" mineral oil? How the hell can you run an engine on that? It has nothing like the lubrication of real oil, or they'd just use that. Or do you mean just fill the engine up, rev it a bit, and then change the oil for some real stuff? That could work, I suppose...I certainly wouldn't want to run a race with an engine filled with mineral oil, though!
Induction noise is the sound of air being drawn through the venturis of the carburettor or through the throttle body of an FI set up-nothing to do with the fuel delivery system. Shut up
@nem427- So the "hissing" noise you can hear while he revs the engine up at the start line is from the throttle body? Not a turbo? I noticed a similar noise from the intake of my Subaru when I removed all the plastic junk, but my Volvo XC70 started making a noticeable hiss when under load, and I was worried at first. It's pathetic, but I never knew that it had a turbo until I noticed the hiss! But I'm sure not complaining...208hp from a low-boost 2.4L I-5! Modern engines DO have good points! =P
@workensmart And last longer, think, some cars that are 100 years old are still alive. Why? Their good and if not good, their cool enough to take care. Think of cars made after 2005. They last maximum next 20 years. Failure evolution by suckers is failure.
@workensmart Four open barrels feeding the carbs WHICH COULD BE TWIN 45s make a great sound if on tune. My mk1 1600 escort twincam Gave me 190BHP at the wheels with alot of tweeking/gas flowing etc. All modern cars look the same to me, No character these days.
Different car though, chevette is 2.3 twin cam, some may say the chevette is better on tarmac due to rear suspension setup, also chevette came out near the end of the 2wd era... maybe if they had been around a little longer, with some more development who knows? Still big respect to the escorts though

@MrColeman92 Sometimes mechanics overfill engines with oil slightly then it gets burnt under high revs ,i do think that`s what is happening here
martymcfly001 1 year ago 10
@martymcfly001 or the valve stem oil seals can be worm and it lets the oil past and burns it off
bayley1990 1 year ago
@martymcfly001 I think it's unburnt fuel not oil.

@24819984 @24819984 Do you actually know what induction noise is???
And that has nothing to do with a fuel injected or carburated engine.
And there are fuel injected BDA engines.
I know what i'm saying my friend ;)

These fords didn't have turbo's back in those days.
It's like what nem427 says......it's air going through a throttle body or venturis.
240bhp or so from those BDA engines!!!
