Thanks, I hadn't heard of an Axolotl until I read the excellent book, "The ancestor's tale " by Richard Dawkins. In the chapter 'Axolotl's tale' he explains more about neoteny or progenesis, the evolutionary consequence of which is called paedomorphosis. The axolotl is just an extreme among salamanders. Many species seem to be , to some extent, paedomorphic, others do other heterochronically interesting things. Axolotls treated with thyroxine lose their gills and become dry land salamanders.
