i was planning to buy this product but gave up. coz i had few questions so i sent 2 e-mails to the GSI 2 weeks ago but still i have not received a reply yet. the product may be excellent but i don't want to purchase any product from this kind of lazy company.
Nice quick run through... I prefer the GSI Pinnacle Base Camper. The pots are 2L and 1.5L instead of 3L and 2L, so its a little lighter. Also the aluminum is has an additional heat transfer layer I think, which evens out heating. For backpacking I can leave a pot behind if I want for addt'l weight savings, but it isn't an ULTRAlight kit. The dualist is more of ultralight commercial stuff. For extreme weight savings I use a Heineken pot & alcohol burner.
Well when it comes to cooking out in the woods, I prefer either a soup or coffee can or I will just use my GI canteen cup and they work well for making stews, boiling water, cooking wild edibles and so forth. I dont take food into the woods with me because I dont need to. I know enough about how and where to find food that when I enter the wild I see nature's walmart. You can get anything you need with the right knowledge. the more you carry in your head the less you carry on your back
@uncleben03 I used a light acid wash to remove any internal chemicals, layers or adhesives. Then rinse thoroughly for 20-30 mins, let dry over night wash thoroughly with soap and water, rinse again, let dry then boil 10 changes of water in it. I might not get all of the chems out but I remove enough so that it doesn't make me think twice before using it. Besides its more of a backup to my GI(just in case something crazy happens.
I have the snow peak trek combo (900ml titanium pot with lid/frying pan, 1400ml titanium pot with lid/frying pan). The smaller pot nests inside the larger pot and it comes with a mesh bag. All of the pieces have their own folding handles attached. I use the Evernew DX alcohol stove set which nests inside the pots. I have cooked many many meals with this set and absolutely love it.
When Teflon flakes off after it gets scratched with a metal utensil it gets into the food, remains in your body forever and can cause cancer. Many BPA free products still contain BPA so I never trust any plastic. Aluminum is linked to alzheimers so stainless steel, cast iron or glass is the only way to go.
@ChuckCh9 yeah Teflon is actually a HORRIBLE thing to have because it has a high level of fluoride and fluoride (regardless of what dentists and government will tell you) is one of the most toxic chemicals in the planet so if you cook with it then you will be getting huge amounts of flouride in your food
Thanks for the video. I have a question.. Is it true that using Teflon to cook, can cause birds to become I'll and die? I've read something like that before but it happened in an enclosed environment. If true, I wonder if it will effect wild birds while camping or since it's an outdoor environment, it dissipates before reaching the birds.
I agree with Twi7ch13. Teflon is no good over hot camp fires..Think.. toxic chemicals. I use heavy weight Al cookware now available at REI. I have also used stainless steel both work great, but use alot of oil.
I have used GSI cookware for a while but I seriously recommend the stainless cookware with NO teflon. The stainless is a bit heavier then the Al versions but I think it can take more beating. The teflon is fine if all your cooking is over a stove. Camp fire gets very hot in spots and cooler in others which has the nasty side effect of burning through Al pots and can/will burn off your teflon layer ruining the pan. I dont like to carry plastic utensils, to cheap and unreliable. Good Reviews!
GSI i find that the plastic has a after taste ...after few washes the soap leaches into the plastic some how?...i dont use my gsi coffee mug anymore ...i tried to get the soap taste out ?
I realy like the look of that dualist, and a decent price to match. I am currently using surplus US items mostly from Veit. and Korean. Canteen cup and Stainless pan w/ plate. Can't possible get any sturdier but its a load to carry. I normally go light on my camps so that I can carry the gear I really like but my pack for extended stays usually top out around 40-50 lbs. depending on the amount of food I carry.
hey @PeakSurvival - I generally really enjoy your gear reviews, but here it appears as if everything was unboxed only a few minutes prior to the video. Have you tested any of the pans - they still have their labels on. I will continue to subscribe, but I like to here about what your thought more when gear has been well tested.
@mrjagill I agree. Saying you used something is not the same as seeing it used. She should start setting up little demos. Otherwise, this is no different than a company video showing you what's inside the box. For example, those sporks are too short and they also look prone to breakage. Let's see her eat Mountain House with one of those short sporks! PS Making too much food on the trail? And then carrying it around with you in storage? Does that really happen?
@ayres390 LARGE bugaboo base camper=3 pounds and 2 ounces, SMALL= 1.9 pounds and MEDIUM= 2 pounds, eight ounces. GSI dualist weighs in at 1.9 pounds (same as bugaboo small!!!!!!)
I like the design of the dualist, however not a fan of cooking with Teflon, and wouldn't buy it for that reason alone. First, for health reasons-- and second every pot I've seen with Teflon has serious durability issues. If I spend serious money on gear, it's an investment in something I want built to last. It's fantastic they way they made the whole set nest together though. If they did a set without all the plastic and chemicals, I'd be on it.
I have the GSi pinnacle soloist, only positive comments on it.

Hum, I'm not a teflon (toxic material) fan but liked the size. I agree with another commenter that it would be great if it was stainless steal.

@Caveman0713 GI Canteen cup=good. boiling or heating a soup can=bad, since they have layers of chemicals on the inside of them.

@Twi7ch13 yeah teflon goes into your food and into your body - and who knows how teflon reacts inside the human body.

I really like the carry bag for the soloist. A portable wash basin is a very clever idea that I wish others would adopt.
