Yes, he does look 40 (his real age) but with all the modern tech. movies have today, lighting can make a huge difference...Check out Cate Blanchett in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. They "aged" her from 19-86 yrs. old. I believe she is 40-ish or so, but looked 20 very believably on screen.

Yes, he does....but special lighting makes a HUGE difference....Cate Blanchette is in her 40's but they were able to make her look believably 20 something again in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"...check it out sometime....I know in Outlander, Jamie is 23-26 yrs. of age. In the second book Dragonfly in Amber, he is 46 yrs. of age and ages as the saga continues. If they are only focusing on Outlander, find an unknown to play Jamie, who can ACT !!!

But she has flawless skin and usually looks younger than 40 - Brad Pitt on the other hand looked ridicoulus in Benjamin Button as a teen. They did a good job on making him old - but young didn't work so well ... and Gerry skin isn't as flawless as Cate's so I'd predict that he'd look weird too.

And I'm afraid you mixed sth up b/c in Dragonfly Jamie is 23-24 (France and during the '45 !) .

Gerry Butler is by far one of my favorite actors (check out "Dear Frankie"!!), but I think an excellent choice for the young Jamie would be Rupert Friend. He is lovely, has the perfect eyes, is tall and can act (check out "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont"). If you do a Google Image search for Rupert, there are some great photos that illustrate his "Jamie" look.

LarsUlrichFan1998, I too heard the same thing from Diana as you did. I E-mailed her about a month ago. However, when I pitched Gerard for the role of Jamie, she thought he would be too old. I made the argument than Scots in the 18th century would look older due to the elements of the climate.

I think exactly the same,I could never imagine a 23 year old of today playing the young Jamie. Wether it would be Gerry or not, the actor has at least to be 30 IMO. No 23 year old of today has the experience and strength Jamie had due to the climate, like you said,the roughness of the 18th century and of course the experiences Jamie has made at this age.

But I fear that Gerry with almost 40 might be really a little bit too old to play young Jamie...

I heard that they are talking about making a movie. Diana says its an independent movie company and a well known scriptwriter.

I dont exactly know whats going on at the moment about it.

I also heard that Diana also prefers Gerry as Jamie. Maybe, if the company is independent from Hollywood and all this stuff Diana could lead the dcision to Gerry.

I once read in an other comment, that Gerrys Fans beg him to read the books and play the role if it will be offered to him.

I agree, it would be great if they made the books into movies and I'd love it for Gerard to play Jamie -- a daft fool could see that he's perfect for the job. He's also an excellent actor and I think he could pull not only the rugged, scottish, Jamie attitude but he could also pull of the calmer, more compassionate side of Jamie. He'd be perfect but you'd need someone who could match his acting to play Claire, otherwise it'd be, as you said, 'crap'. Hopefully it happens!!! :)

Jamie Fraser. Back in 1746 life was very tough for the clans, the people looked a lot older than their years. The Highlanders worked the land from childhood, the weather its self played a big part in aging the skin. There is not other actor who could portray Jamie, Gerry has the looks, the brogue, and the body, a fine specimen of a Scotsman.

well diana doesn't want to sell the rights of the characters to a studio,director,writer,produce­r unless they've read the books she said that she's had some meetings with producers bt they want claire to be american and World War II be the vietnam war. so she said until she finds someone who's read the books there wont be a movie.i'll write a script for it bt i hate it when ppl make movies based on books and leave out important things if outlander was made it would b 5 hrs long

Your right. If the books ever suppose to be on big screen, then they should stay close to the books. Otherwise it would end in a disaster and a lot of fans of the books would be disappointed! Its pretty hard to find a studio a good script writer and a producer which are brave enough to do it that way. Were all know, in these times its hard to find a really good book adaptation. Therefore I understand the fears of Diane Gabaldon!!!

I completely agree. I've seen movies adapted from books that were fantastic and faithful (Holes and Bridge to Terabithia) but others that were complete disasters (Ella Enchanted and some of the Harry Potters). Where there is such a highly-appreciated and popular book, they have to be faithful to it and not throw stuff away, because fan readers will be so excited to see it on the big screen and then be majorly disappointed. I haven't read Outlanders, but now it's on by booklist!

But 1.He's a bit mature to play a 23y old character 2.I believe that Gabaldon has created Jamie and Claire in such a way that their essence is very ellusive for any actor.
