Great music is great music. Why waste time and energy in quibbling about an artist's unique God given spin on a particular selection? Enjoy and Chill Out!
I was flipping channels last night and heard redfox singing this but i think he changed the words. He said take my arms i wont use them, take my lips i want to bruise them. I thought that was so cute but i guess those aren't the words offically...lol!
I have a question, who wrote this and performed it originally, I've heard so many versions Frank Sinatra,Willie Nelson,Nofx,Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Michael Buble etc.
@DrAbstracked It is a jazz standard, meaning lots of artists have played their own renditions of it, and if you are a jazz musician you will probably have to know how to play it. Anyway, I'm pretty sure it was written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons.
Dear @DrAbstracked, the first performance of All of Me was from Ruth Elting, an actress I can remember in an old movie with James Cagney. I know her version and we really can´t compare it with Ella´s, Armstrong, Sinatra & others. But she has the merit to be the first.
@zomzilove i think the same thing when i watch these vids of pros in their later years. tom jones is another. 40 year career & making new music. that's living right there.
Ella was amazing. I wish she had recorded more with small groups with out there front and center. Anyone remember those commercials, is it live or it it Memorex, with Ella shattering a wine glass? hehe
@steelyfan147 I'm shocked firstly that you would dare post that, and secondly that there wasn't an avalanche of outraged, guilt-ridden, tone-deaf white folks calling you names for- gasp!- speaking the truth. Billie's talent was storytelling, & when telling the story of a trainwreck it helped to sound like a trainwreck. Therein comes white guilt- how did that happen? Surely it couldn't have been her own choice! But Ella- golden voice, perfect diction, and Ella style. A pro who gave her best.
I am not going to rate between Billie and Ella, because I prefer Billie to sing songs such as Sophisticated Lady and Strange Fruit. Billie has a uniqueness their. But Ella's voice on some songs sweep me away. Not this song though. Her slower songs are the ones that do me in.
"Once, when we were playing at the Apollo, Holiday was working a block away at the Harlem Opera House. Some of us went over between shows to catch her, and afterwards we went backstage. I did something then, and I still don't know if it was the right thing to do - I asked her for her autograph." (from official webside od Ella) but....
in 1943 Esquire magazine made a enquiry where people said that Billie is the best singer before Mildred Bailey and Ella Fitzgerald so... :)
Alan62651, yes, you of course are right, my post was joke-respond to jpsilenzi. I like different music styles, different singers, so don`t by angry, show some sense of humor :)
Can't understand why some people persist in "rating" artists of different styles against each other. I can't think of a more foolish waste of time. Musicians are different because people are different. Viva la difference!
true.. lots of are gone, but some are still alive remember al jarreau ;) ( sry if he is not ur favourite style, but yeah he definitely knows how to sing/ scat)
BTW: ella was the FIRST!! scatter! she brought this to jazz! she even got better in her "older" days, she is and was one of the bester EVER!!! and she is my idol. no one comes clos to her thanks for the music ella
actually louis armstrong was the first person to record scat on a song. the story goes that he was in the studio singing and accidently knocked the music off the stand and couldn't stop so he just started making up stuff. scat, however, was common in the street music. ella is certainly the one who turned scat into it's own artform though.
tumpetking86: you are completely right, i now finished the biography of ella and it is totally clear that louis was the first. on the other side ella brought this style ofmusic to perfection ... just for my opinion.. thanks for your comment
Ella did great things for jazz, withouth a doubt, but it sounds like you need a history lesson. Have you heard of Louis Armstrong? while in a recording session in 1926 for "Heebie Jeebies," he dropped his music. in those days, recording was expensive so he continued without words. Most people consider this the first scat solo in jazz, and He (yes, He warrants capitalization) certainly brought it to prominence.
I've always thought that scat singing looks great fun, and Ella Fitzgerald does it so well. Like all of Ella's other songs, this is completely brilliant!
There was a supposed decline in her voice by the 80s. But I think she more than remedied that with her experience and expression. Not many singers are capable of that.
My long time friend Ki Allen is exceptional in this genre-check out her website- you will not be sorry! words cannot express how proud of her that I am.
mon00monde you haven't got the sense god gave a cracker. Billie Holiday WAS great, no doubt but Ella is the all time queen of this genre. Why? Her tone is near perfect, even at 70+ years old, she scats like a demon and, most important, she maintained her DIGNITY well into old age. My wife and I agree, modern Jazz "greats" like Diana Krall(yawn) pale in such stark contrast to the old-school ladies that you are left to wonder if Vocal Jazz is not a dead art, which sadly, it is.
I agree that Ella was the queen. But, there ARE still good singers out there. You just have to go out and hear live music. You've got to look harder than browsing iTunes or Amazon. The talent's there--tho' none like Miss Ella's--ya just gotta go out and find it.
