They could have perfectly turned the boat into a civilian ship and leave the military out. They didn't. This collateral damage is nothing compared to the number of civilians killed by the Germans.

And don't forget that the Germans were engaged in a TOTAL WAR. The soldiers would have fought against the Russians once in German territory (thus causing more deaths).

The casualities for the allies on the Easten front were already huge at that point. Anything to stop the war had to be done.

I didn't know it split into three pieces.....or was that another ship that got torpedoed? this ship was very safe, unlike Lusitania sinking in eighteen minutes from one torpedo, the Wilhelm Gustloff sank in an hour from three torpedoes! so it was alot safer than the four stackers.

However the cost was too high. 4,300 adults died and worse 5,000 children. These are not exact numbers but so close. The USSR did not need to sink her as she was not in military service nor had any real weapons, but a few for self defence. The USSR knew this well. They wanted vengeance at all cost. The Wilhelm Gustloff Is Close To Me Because I Studied It With My Grandfather Who Fought In World War 2....Due To The Complexity Of Her Story It Is Very hard to Edit One, Especially From What Little I Have On My Computer.
