very well sung as a concert piece. I htink she would have sung this really well if it had been as part of the opera. Her voice would have been warmed up . Lost it a bit at the end but still a lovely performance.
If any of you are interested in REAL singing, listen to Kirsten Flagstad or Leontyne Price. They may not be as "camera ready" but they are real artists, not this little made-for-tv lady.
@elainebmack Also. Do you understand this woman has sang at La Scala.... Obviously shes good. Also, shes not out of tune at all until the last note. Get your ears checked.
@mkelk0530 Sorry darling. She is out of tune and forced. Like I posted before, listen to Price, Flagstad, Sutherland, De Los Angeles, and more. As for Pavorotti, when he began singing at sports stadiums, yes he needed a mic, but in a real opera house he didn't. Nothing wrong with my ears dear.
@elainebmack Honey, shes not performing the opera. This is a concert. And if you do a simple youtube search, Pavorotti did IN fact use a microphone for his Pavorotti and friends concert. I think when you too perform frequently at the Met and La Scala, you too can judge this priceless voice.

This aria has got to be one of the most beautiful melodies ever written! Dvorak is amazing. I would love to see this opera in its full length. Netrebko, how beautiful to hear and see you paired with this aria!
She's a fabulous singer but this wonderful piece of music is supposed to be
a song which is a sung by a very young and (one assumes) virginal princess
who has been parted from her first love. It is very difficult for a "Diva"to pull of a convincing performance. Listen to the last part where Anna sounds, as Divas often do, like she is laying down the law to some unfortunate man. Are there any versions by female singers who can resist the temptation to bully the melody?
@petelloyd5 I appreciate your sensitive and musically astute opinion here. But a thought comes to me about my own youth in that young, delicate women can harbor powerful but misguided passions that want to burst forth. And we end up "bullying the melody" of our lives. Maybe I am not making any sense!
@readerjoy Marvellous insight. Delightful metaphor. Music is after all, among other things, a metaphor for how we experience our inner state. I appreciate both Anna's and Milada's versions for exactly these reasons, just as I appreciate different women reacting at times with forceful passion and at other times exquisite innocence. Who can say it is supposed to be one way or the other
So good to have thoughtful comments on both sides to add to the experience of enjoying these treasures. :)
@petelloyd5 I think the reason for the intense emotions, that singers put into the final part, is that Rusalka is a night creature. She falls in love with a human and she wants to be human herself, nighttime is the only time she can be closer to humans in appearance. She is begging the Moon not to go down and let her loved one know about her love. I think it`s a mix of feelings - love, longing, inexperience, despair of being caught in her own fate.
Anna you are simply spectacular. Please come to visit Venezuela. You will find a lot of very young and young singers following your path and been inspired by you. Bravissima.
@ForAll23 I can't agree. For me Popp's voice had all the brilliance one can imagine, and her technique was definitely superior to that of Netrebko. In this aria the lightness is difficult to judge, but just listen to Popp singing Voi che sapete. Popp was, similar to Gruberova, a master of breath support. Her singing was fluid and she had an absolute control of the voice in any situation. Netrebko on the other hand seems often unable to control her great voice.
For me Popp was more of a light soprano (more soubrette towards light-lyric). She has not Anna's deep and extensive sound, nor was her voice so rooted in the body, compared to Anna.
I see Anna as a bit of a natural phenomenon, so not with Lucia.
However, I was always fond of Popp as an artist and will therefore not, in any way, devalue her greatness as an artist.
"Voi che Sapete".., her voice was made for that aria.
@ForAll23 One more example: compare the 1981 recording of Quel guardo il cavaliere with Popp, and the same aria recorded with Netrebko 2011. There are not only thirty years between the two, there are worlds.
There are "ordinary" singers, there are stars and there are “The Great Masters”. The one who is the best among the great masters is simply a matter of taste.
I respect your opinion, but I do not think Lucia Popp belong to "The Great Masters", however I believe that Anna Netrebko does.

@fashpart LMAO yeah it does to me too. LOL It is such a shock after a quiet song and you have the volume all the way up then this one comes on and you blast your ear drums out :P hahah
hmm.. there have been more musical renderings of this aria. Not that it's bad. Just lacking the magic that singers like Lucia Popp could bring to the piece. Here, the music lives more from the orchestral performance than from the solo voice.
I am not a conossieur--but I think arias and voices go together. Some singers are better at some arias than others. I love Netrebko in Rusalka and O Mio Babbino Caro. I love Renee Fleming in La Boheme.
Indeed, a beautiful performance. But her pronounciation in this particular concert is somewhat flawed, particular "daleko", vidí" are sang with an obvious Russian accent, so as the words with letter Ř (like stŘíbrný měsíčku, a silver moon). But those are just minor mistakes.)
Perchè ha 2 microfoni davanti? e sarebbe una cantante lirica? che schifo... come Puccini si è fermato con la Tebaldi, Rusalka si deve fermare con la Fleming !
I don't like her. She lacks passion and seems a bit boring. I agree with the comments about her being flat/sharp. I also think that the Db2 (semitone above middle C) is too low for her. She's really struggling to give it any richness and depth. The 'big high note' Bb is sharp at first (which may come from too much enthusiasm) but does even itself out pretty quickly. Mind you, I came here after watching Renée Fleming's take on this so my expectations are high.
She has too much Russian accent which takes the quality!
Czech divas can obviously sing it the best, but Finnish diva Karita Mattila has the best pronunciation, stress and accent I have ever heard among no-Czech divas!
Whether a performance is enjoyable or not can indeed be subject to debate. But whether a song is being sung in tune or not is a measureable fact that can only be answered with yes or no. And in this case she does in fact frequently go off pitch throughout the performance. Those who deny that are either slightly tone deaf or in denial. I am sure that if one were to ask Netrebko herself she would not deny it.
@feraudyh Really curious as to why you think it is over the top? Song to the moon, there is a moon shining it's light onto her and mist... I would say it was as minimal as possible. Especially compaired to the music video they made to her singing this...
This version is not bad but her pronounciation is horrible and her singing is missing something. The far best version comes from Milada Šubrtová, it's absolute masterpiece. Check it.
She doesn't sound out of tune to me. As to her pronounciation of Czech, I don't know a word of Czech nor Ukranian. I'll let the technical critiques to the choiristers and professional musicians. I onlyknow what I like, and I enjoy her singing.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Out of tune and boring. She is too dumb, unfortunately, and that's why she sounds so helpless and boring. She simply does not know what to do with the music. A pity, because she has a nice voice.
..it appears (to me at least) that the text adds an important dimension. Although Rusalka is a folkloric figure, it seems here more inspired by Pushkins drama: The Rusalka once was a living girl who drowned herself after beeing deceived by her lover. She woke as a cold and mighty water spirit and is now calling the moon to bring her former lover back to her, dead.
At least, that is my understanding of the text, although I do not actually know Czeck. Anyone who can correct or broaden this?.
My God (or: Bozje moj), right now I have listened to this for 2 hours, tried to play it on gitar, compared to Subrtova's, found the original text to better follow. Right now it seems the most fantastic I have ever listened to
@asheim1202 Cool! You listened to Subrtova's ... me too. that's a really good version. I saw some people comparing her performance with Fleming which makes no sense to me. It's a cultural thing. Anna gets it. She knows where to put her head to make it work. Brilliant! Every ime I see it I think of the music video on her DVD. Wow that blows me away. Beautiful, can act, humble, sings like a goddess and loads of fun..I wanna take her home to meet mum.
Why is everyone being so horrible? This is probably the best iv ever heard Anna sing. She creates such a peaceful atmosphere...and she is so slightly sharp that i don't understand why it needs to be an issue. It is still very enjoyable to listen to. Better to be sharp than flat. Beautiful interpretation
@cecily0redman There is emotion! No need to over-emote...the way she feels the words creates peace and I understand exactly what she is trying to acheive.
This is the best Rusalka ever. Fabulous performance and remarkable interpretation. So refined! The combination of Anna's Slavic soul with her magnificent, magical, fantastic voice is truly incredible! Bravo Anna! You are the Goddess! Thank you for filling our lives with joy and pleasure!
@soullessSiIence PLENTY of people care if it's sharp. Maybe YOU don't care. But don't speak for others. Intonation is pretty important for a professional singer. (I've actually heard her sing this quite a bit worse. This performance is a relatively good one for her.)
@myassdotcom She IS out of tune. Rather than calling others 'morons', you might plunk this out on a well-tuned piano and compare. Nails on chalkboard.
@xgianpatrick The reason you sound like a fool is that pianos are tuned to equal temperament, and orchestras are not. You will NEVER get the same result from a piano unless it's out of tune with itself. Choirs that sing with piano sing their major triads out of tune, and self-correct instantly when singing a cappella. She sounds fine in context (and I have perfect pitch, so it would most definitely bother me if she didn't; the flutist playing noticeably flat at 0:44 bothers me a lot).
@violinista53 You are splitting hairs with equal/unequal temperament here. Netrebko is so far out in left field in terms of pitch (read her reviews, it's a common and accurate critique), that it is, indeed, painful. It is likely due to faulty technique, but also might be a problem with her ear. She is not in tune with either the orchestra or herself. Again, why do the Netrebko defenders always assault the critic? Out of tune singing is a hallmark of her work, and is unfortunate for the art.
To those who are not a musical genius like you, Ana Netebko is such marvelous that we do not care if she is out of tune or not, it does not mean a thing ! There are critics here that want to show up like masters of perfection but at the end only showd how stupid they are. To me Ana is perfection.
All of you who think Ms. Netrebko is singing flat need to get your hearing checked, or adjust the audio on your speakers. She is perfectly in tune with the flutes at almost all times, so how could she possibly be sharp? In fact, the high note in the final phrase is ever so slightly flatted, although almost imperceptibly, and so is the same note in the YouTube posting of this aria by Šubrtová!
You may not like Netrebko's overtones, but they make it possible for you to hear her over orchestra.
@merryalto She is perfectly in tune, I believe her musical ear is much better than ours. Only the last high note (I believe the aria is in F#, so this would be A#, Měsííííčku nezhasni) is very sharp - intentionally.
@merryalto I agree with you. The thing that might be issue but not the problem was the mike setup, but it was to show off her voice and not the orchestra. Thank for your post.
I love her vocal color in this performance. The other YouTube posting 'To the Moon' suffers from poor distorted sound so it is hard to compare the two performances. On this one however her sound is so thick you can almost drink it. Now its off to Renee Fleming.
@Deinareia V její podáni i ta čeština zni krásně. Protože ona zpívá tam kde čéšky mluvněji, ale to už není zpěv. „Mluvit česky může každý vratný v ČR. „. To řekl jeden český dirigent.
very well sung as a concert piece. I htink she would have sung this really well if it had been as part of the opera. Her voice would have been warmed up . Lost it a bit at the end but still a lovely performance.

Do not know even one singer who sings many hundreds of live performances

It is also almost impossible to sing flawlessly in a language which one does not know. Native speakers almost always hear mistakes.
Anna has the "magic" qualities that consistently impress the vast majority of her audiences. She gives us great art, hundreds of thousands enjoy it!

But those are just minor mistakes.)
unzicek 6 months ago
Perchè ha 2 microfoni davanti? e sarebbe una cantante lirica? che schifo... come Puccini si è fermato con la Tebaldi, Rusalka si deve fermare con la Fleming !
stesondrio88 6 months ago
I don't like her. She lacks passion and seems a bit boring. I agree with the comments about her being flat/sharp. I also think that the Db2 (semitone above middle C) is too low for her. She's really struggling to give it any richness and depth. The 'big high note' Bb is sharp at first (which may come from too much enthusiasm) but does even itself out pretty quickly. Mind you, I came here after watching Renée Fleming's take on this so my expectations are high.
annapretentious 6 months ago
She has too much Russian accent which takes the quality!
Czech divas can obviously sing it the best, but Finnish diva Karita Mattila has the best pronunciation, stress and accent I have ever heard among no-Czech divas!
Norwegian Solveig Kringlebotn is great, too.
radikborov 6 months ago
Whether a performance is enjoyable or not can indeed be subject to debate. But whether a song is being sung in tune or not is a measureable fact that can only be answered with yes or no. And in this case she does in fact frequently go off pitch throughout the performance. Those who deny that are either slightly tone deaf or in denial. I am sure that if one were to ask Netrebko herself she would not deny it.

lusiiija 6 months ago
@Lahva27 Její přízvuk není otřesný. Je prostě ruský. A je jí rozumět naprosto výborně... ;-)
StarsCollideify 6 months ago
@StarsCollideify Ano, je tam ruský přízvuk a to je vyloženě odporné! To se tam nesmí objevovat.
Poslechni si Karitu Mattilu a Solveig Kringlebotn, uvidíš, jak čistý přednes mají, ačkoliv nejsou Slovanky.
Tuto Rusku vůbec nezajímá, že je čeština citlivá a dál si jede svůj přízvuk!
radikborov 6 months ago
Lahva27 4 months ago
@Lahva27 řekla bych, že v porovnání s jinými zahraničními pěvkyněmi má Netrebko jakéhokoli přízvuku skutečně poskrovnu...

Out of tune and boring. She is too dumb, unfortunately, and that's why she sounds so helpless and boring. She simply does not know what to do with the music. A pity, because she has a nice voice.
AfroPoli 8 months ago
..it appears (to me at least) that the text adds an important dimension.
Anyone who can correct or broaden this?.
asheim1202 8 months ago
My God (or: Bozje moj), right now I have listened to this for 2 hours, tried to play it on gitar, compared to Subrtova's, found the original text to better follow. Right now it seems the most fantastic I have ever listened to
asheim1202 8 months ago

@soullessSiIence When a piece is consistently sharp it becomes an issue, regardless of what those lacking the training to recognize it may think.
tenor220 8 months ago
@soullessSiIence PLENTY of people care if it's sharp. Maybe YOU don't care. But don't speak for others. Intonation is pretty important for a professional singer. (I've actually heard her sing this quite a bit worse. This performance is a relatively good one for her.)
GoldinDr 8 months ago
@soullessSiIence Forgive me, how can out of tune be 'beautiful'?
cecily0redman 8 months ago
@cecily0redman She is not out of tune. Listen, you moron.
myassdotcom 8 months ago
@myassdotcom She IS out of tune. Rather than calling others 'morons', you might plunk this out on a well-tuned piano and compare. Nails on chalkboard.
xgianpatrick 8 months ago
@xgianpatrick The reason you sound like a fool is that pianos are tuned to equal temperament, and orchestras are not. You will NEVER get the same result from a piano unless it's out of tune with itself. Choirs that sing with piano sing their major triads out of tune, and self-correct instantly when singing a cappella. She sounds fine in context (and I have perfect pitch, so it would most definitely bother me if she didn't; the flutist playing noticeably flat at 0:44 bothers me a lot).
violinista53 8 months ago
@violinista53 You are splitting hairs with equal/unequal temperament here. Netrebko is so far out in left field in terms of pitch (read her reviews, it's a common and accurate critique), that it is, indeed, painful. It is likely due to faulty technique, but also might be a problem with her ear. She is not in tune with either the orchestra or herself. Again, why do the Netrebko defenders always assault the critic? Out of tune singing is a hallmark of her work, and is unfortunate for the art.
xgianpatrick 8 months ago

You may not like Netrebko's overtones, but they make it possible for you to hear her over orchestra.
merryalto 8 months ago 15
@merryalto You misspelled her name, it's MRS. Netrebko, i'm going to marry her :)
marleyfan008 6 months ago
@merryalto She is perfectly in tune, I believe her musical ear is much better than ours. Only the last high note (I believe the aria is in F#, so this would be A#, Měsííííčku nezhasni) is very sharp - intentionally.
76mn1 6 months ago
@merryalto I agree with you. The thing that might be issue but not the problem was the mike setup, but it was to show off her voice and not the orchestra. Thank for your post.

I love her vocal color in this performance. The other YouTube posting 'To the Moon' suffers from poor distorted sound so it is hard to compare the two performances. On this one however her sound is so thick you can almost drink it. Now its off to Renee Fleming.
