Reminds me of this: Morporkia! Morporkia! Morporkia owns the day! We can rule you wholesale. Touch us and you'll pay. We bankrupt all invaders, we sell them souvenirs. We ner ner ner ner ner, hner ner hner by the ears. Er hner we ner ner ner ner ner. Ner ner her ner ner ner hner the ner. Er ner ner hner ner, nher hner ner ner (etc.). Ner hner ner, your gleaming swords. We mortgaged to the hilt. Morporkia! Morporkia! Hner ner ner ner ner ner. We can rule you wholesale. Credit where it's due.
I'm English & 95% of us dont know the words to our anthem either. Never sung it in my life & never will. The British establishment have done more to drag our culture through the mud than anything else & singing about a woman's glory who is German in any case, as opposed to our country, it's peoples endeavour, their bravery at war & it's strong culture is totally hypercritical.
@ALBIONTYKE I had to sing the national anthem at school occasionally, but I went to a religious school. But you're right; however, the rest of the world is gullible enough to make us billions in Tourism money from the Monarchy, so I'll take it anyday.
Even just taking the tax burden of the monarchy (to pay for their estates) versus the amount of money those specific estates make, it's $180bn in profit
@Alathaea Thing is the money the monarchy raise from the their estates is land they inherited & the people who pay the monarchy money from the estates are British citizens. In effect no wealth whatsoever is created, instead existing money is juggled round from the tenants to the monarchy. Without them tourism would not make any difference as people come to see the historic buildings & countryside, not the Queen as in France, in fact Buck House & Balmoral could be be open to the paying public
I haven't seen the full special, but I'm surprised that there is no mention of the fact that our national anthem is set to the tune of an old British drinking song. Haha.
I'm American and I wouldn't care if he was making fun of our anthem. I don't like it. Though giving it some zing with his suggestions might get me to warm to it a little. Anyhow, it's not like he wouldn't have suggestions for God Save the Queen singers.
park4488 What a peculiar & wrong, wrong, wrong idea you have of Eddie Izzard. You couldn't find anyone less xenophobic than him - he embraces & mocks all nationalities on an equal footing! I can't believe that you can't recognise intelligent, grown-up humour when you hear it.
How many "xenophobes" do you know who can do an entire concert in another language? He already does it in French & , the last I heard, was getting ready to tackle it in German as well. Welcome to Village Earth.

Everytime I hear that song I break down in tears. A long time ago a man was watching from a ship, he saw a great war battle and decided to write about his feeling towards his country. I know all you want to do is wear women's make up, stick to outdated slurred speech, and write uneducated xenophic steretypes. Just remember one thing, "That our flag was still there."
@park4488 sorry, what? He's joking around and talking about Americans because he's talking to an American audience, and they obviously aren't offended. He's not insulting our national anthem or our country or anything like that, he's just poking fun. I don't know where you got the idea that he's xenophobic; he's bilingual, for fuck's sake.
As an aside, what do you mean by "outdated, slurred speech?" Are you referring to his accent? Because that's not outdated, it's British.
@park4488 Chill. If you don’t know anything about comedy, then don’t comment. He’s making fun of the fact that Americans don’t know their own national anthem. If anything, it only shows that he feels the national anthem should be respected and NOT butchered. It’s called satire.
@park4488 "Everytime I hear that song I break down in tears." Okay. Well. That might be a part of your problem. "That our flag was still there." Yes. It was also the War of 1812. Time to move on.
What the hell? Why do you have subtitles on this video for Christ sake? He's speaking English. Open your ears!

He's just saying what most singers and entertainers know: if you forget a word or a line of lyrics, fake it.

He does sound quite a bit better than the people they actually get to sing it in big stadiums.
They should get him to do it for the next Superbowl. ; )
