First off, you have a beautiful car there! Second, it is refreshing to see one of these cars in the hands of somebody who doesn't abuse the car trying to impress people. That nice easy take-off was impressive enough! I guess the people who abuse cars, smoking tires and such, either don't know the mechanics of a car or didn't build it themselves, they just went out and bought it already restored. Anyway, very nice!!
One way to settle it. Send the VIN number into PMD and get a copy of the original build sheet. My nephew bought a 70 GTO with a wing on it. He spent around $60 for the build sheet and found out it was a real Judge. It's for sale btw, any buyers?
Only about 223 GTOs with VOE exhaust system were built in 1970--GM pulled the production plug in the wake of insurance backlash and negative response to the commercial---but none of the factory VOE equipped GTOs were convertibles as you see here...the VOE here was added on.. also in factory models the VOE control was to the right of the steering wheel, not the left as in this car... Nonetheless this represents the swan song of the GTO; once the premier muscle car but fading fast by 1970...
In 1970 GM was concentrating its performance efforts on the new Firebird/Camaro, esp TransAm and Z28...the GTO was being forgotten..the interesting front end disappeared that year; it looked more like a LeMans, sales dropped sharply..by the end of 1970 insurance rates of muscle cars quintipled and dealers couldn't give the cars away...car magazines of the period were commenting on the GTO's fade from glory that year...two years later the GTO was all but gone forever.. noone noticed or cared
Really nice. ive been looking every where for an exhaust system like that for my new 78'z28 Camaro. ... u noe with the option of making it loud at the tip of your fingers. Do you know of anyone that makes them? if not could you describe to me how to make one, it'd really appreciate it. its a shame GM didnt make that standard for all the hi-performance packages all the way until the late 70's
Forgot to add that open they sound almost like loud glassspacks or Magnaflow-type mufflers with the sound level of typical Flowmaster mufflers of the 17" case size.
What do the open and closed exhaust noise resemble? Like for example "the open muffler noise sounds like a Flowmaster....Series Muffler while the closed sounds like the..."
My dad has a 1970 GTO with this option. Pretty cool. He never bought the mufflers after the originals wore out. They were super expensive to replace back in the day even. He still has his switch and everything else is stock on his car.
from what i read thur a variety of speculation, and maybe i'm wrong, but the reason they deleted the option was based on the commercial that was televised. Pontiac put the "humbler" commercial on tv under GM's nose and once they noticed what was pontiac trying to invoke (drag racing), they quickly pulled the commercial off the air and canned the option. They knew that this won't fly with the Feds or the insurance agencies since GM was trying keep their image clean from street racing.
The difference now: today's supercars are higher priced relative to other cars with more luxury options, better tires, brakes and handling than they were in the 60s..not as many young punks buying them now, drivers older, so they're not being wrecked as often, so insurance cos don't quintiple the insurance rates like in 1970...typical car yearly insurance then: $150/yr; muscle car insurance then: $900/yr--that was 25% the price of the car back then and equal to $12,000++ in today's money...
back in the 70 GTO, Pontiac was going to release an optional exhaust cutout....thats the switch under the dash...thats why the exhaust got louder and then quieter. it was pulled before actual production. I dont know of any that got to production, but obviously someone is making the muffler.
Thansk for the comment; this is one of the originals and in fact, it is oneof three convertibles that we built mufflers for out of the first two lots of 20 or so pair. :):).

WOW thats pretty awesome! I like the idea of having a regular quiet muffler and then in a moment having an almost glasspack sound.
Such an awesome sleeper tool for muscle cars ^_^
Thanks btw!

Closed it sounds like and almost quieter than stock dual exhaust GTO mufflers or slightly louder than typical big cars like Olds or Cadillacs.

called the "Tiger Button" by Pontiac. Only offered in '70. Was going to be produced in '71 and '72 but was scrapped, i can't remember why.

i was told pollution and safety was getting to be a big deal and GM thought this was promoting street racing and they just couldn't have that.
They didn't like "the humbler" name either i don't believe
