Years ago on Intellivision and poossiby Atari most definetly Intellivision though because I had the game there was a Popeye game because Bluto chased you and Olive Oyl helped Popeye defeat him!!!
We used to have a video tape of some old Popeye cartoons and watched them all the time. I totally remember this movie and I could never forget the song.
I have only seen a few Japanese anime movies surpass the sheer quality of animation before the shitty ass Flinstones came along and gimped cartoons to the Stone Age.
the best moments are right after he has eaten the spinach, followed by the catchy melody and a close-up of his biceps .. always some powerful stuff, a tank, mount everest or a giant engine .. ahhh <3
Especially so considering Sindbad "lived" maybe 1000 or 1100 years ago. And mix in Popeye and "Stars and Stripes Forever" -- and other anachronisms like SPINACH IN A CAN! -- Wow - History's timeline milkshake.
Whatever happened to good ol' cartoons where badguys got punched out and beaten into goo? (Remember how Popeye "cooked" Sindbad's "goose"?) Priceless! ... These days we have to watch "My Little Pony" and get brainwashed into learning "how we all can get along"...
I remember seeing this at school when I was a kid. They had this and some Felix the cat cartoons, and some others that my memory are too foggy to even remember
40 theives takes it all best popeye episode ever. pops had me eatin spinage he's good, cause at age 5 spinage was not on my top ten. hell it wont ony top 3
My favorite one of the three Popeye specials was the Aladdin one, because that had a breaking-the-fourth-wall gag and because it had more romance with Popeye and Olive. Not to mention that the end gag was funny too. These other two are excellent as well of course.
The breaking-the-fourth-wall gag I'm referring to is when Popeye, as Aladdin, mutters "I've never made love in Technicolor before." Brilliant, especially since you don't often see other characters making *that* sort of reference! XD
This was one of the best,if not THE best Fleischer Popeye cartoon. The songs are great-and this is one of the few times Popeye sang his entire theme song. The best thing about Fleischer Popeye cartoons is that they capture the true spirit of Popeye as a roughneck sailor-and they show that he can do some pretty amazing things prior to his spinach feed.
Interesting that all the Fleischer color two-reel Popeyes are drawn from Arabian Nights tales.Besides Sinbad, there were Ali Baba and Alladin.
anyone else watch this a billion times as a kid then forget about it then as an adult see it and realize you can sing along perfectly? SIN BAAD THE SAILOOORRR
Wow, I remember watching this when I was a kid. Now that I'm grown up I can appreciate just how great the animation is. The scene with the roc circling the ship is stellar. Just look at how the shadow moves with it and the "camera" rotates. And consider this was done BY HAND. There are shows animated fully with computers nowadays that don't hold a candle to this quality.
A documentary was done on cartoons of this time frame. The documentary showed this cartoon and how the animaters done the background scene. The Background was a continuous rotating cell that they taped without Popeye. He was later drawn in to make it like 2 D.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There is also a restored print of "Popeye Meets Sinbad the Sailor" complete with the original Paramount logo intact. This one was used in many of the Flesicher's "Color Classics" series including this one.
It's amazing what they've done with the background; How they hell did they give it such dimension? I don't know what they did. It's obviously not rendered, but it's clear they didn't animate it in the conventional sense.
