Can anyone tell me which ships are in this video, I notice a cruiser in front, an aircraft carrier in the middle and a powerful battleship behind them.
@bombarderoazul You have a splicing of several different little film clips The Carriers are Ark Royal and Victorious. The cruiser could, repeat could , have been Sheffield. The Heavies are Renown and a KGV battleship.
This video is brilliant. One of my fav. books is about the battle for Atlantic during the IIWW. This is like taken from this book! Those where some rough times. So many died and drowned in the cold seas...
This is one of the two best heavy weather vids on You Tube. Without taking anything away from the vessels and their crews, it never ceases to amaze me that birds are always to be seen flying around in weather like this.
i can only imagine the skill those navy officers had to sail in a convoy in such heavy seas...back then there were no fancy gps, powerfull radars on board or sofisticated sensors to help you sail...only a compus,a map, craions and skilled men. i take my hat off to them
its not very nice to be there but I was a deckhand at 16 and had to wear a harness for safety most of the time - when on deck but had to put it on mostly.
A Boeing A380 twin deck supersonic airplane landed on a chinese super-carrier on Lake Baikal last week to pick up 200 tonnes of spaghetti bolognese which is the traditional food of China
Those are aircraft carriers, the RN never used carriers in European Waters. I think what we see here is the Royal Navy crossing the Drake Channel in order to aid the US fleet in the Pacific. The Drake Channel is notorious for its unstable and dangerous weather.
you sir, are an idiot. The RN did use aircraft carriers in European water. For example to launch planes for the attack on Taranto, as well as to attack the German Battleship Bismarck off France. Know what you're talking about
Um, Ark Royal was sunk about 22 miles from Gilbraltor...if that's not European waters, I don't know what is. British torpedo bombers crippled the Bismarck's steering....other carriers operated throughout the Med....Don't know what else could be considered "European Waters"
Going after the German war machine. German people wanted war they got a war on their hands especially the 2nd World War. This time like a giant rake over Berlin. We smashed this country to pieces. The German's never fired up the war machine again because we didn't do a good job the first time the second time would be their last and a lasting impression on any German who would like to fire up the war machine again. Did Martin make it out of the bunker alive and mingle with those displaced.
Incredible. I mean not only did these men FIGHT in these seas: they did it because that was the glorious old RN's playground and not only because it was war.
Epic ships and epic sailors: they deserve... no, command respect and admiration!
Rule Brittania! God bless the souls on all sides that the waves took in that horrible war.
True, i read some books over the german Kriegsmarine, and it must have been so horrible for both sides. Cold water like 1000 needles and no hope for help. Lets pray something terrible like that will never happen again!
some of those waves would be considered rouge waves to us today. Did they even call them rouge waves then. Probly not they called them just big waves. All souls that battle waves like that are rugged as hell.
I always recall my pop saying if isaid it was a wild night outside in broad scots, ye never seen nothing until ye done the convyoys up in the artic for the russians supply, saw a clip years later , my generation are very soft when i saw what they saliors put up with then. brave people.
@WELLBRAN true. I would recommend "COXSWAIN IN THE NORTHERN CONVOYS" (sry caps, copy/paste :p) by Kerslake. You'll find most of the book for free if you google it.
Must say...definately one of my favorites !!!Choice of music seems quite fitting too .Gettinr to the battle was a battle in itself ...thanks for the cool vid !
Designated as fleet carriers in the RN but compared to the likes of the Essex & Midway classes designated as CVLs by the USN. Just look at the differences in air complement.
Hi, I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. I've created a clip of a WW2 battleship trading card set. It is rumoured that Hitler purchased this set for his U-boat personnel.
Actually during the entirety of World War II the Royal Navy lost no warships to the elements, compared to the French losing one and the United States losing four.
Its a convoy covering force in the Arctic.KGVs & 2 Illustrious class CVLs to deter Tirpitz & co from any sorties. No destroyers were lost in this Arctic storm but heavily damaged or ordered back to port.
Incredible. How brave they were. I'd have been sick for weeks.
But I suppose it was still better than being in North Africa in a tank at 130F

Impressive (i cannot think if a better word), the best Video i've been recommended to date.
Definitely the Feircest Weather in living memory the Royal Navy has had to endure, which they evidently did rather well.
