Another fact is that a girl needs a father more than a mother. (and a boy needs a mother more than a father, but a father is more important to a girl than a mother is to a boy) this is just averaged out from research.

Of course we need both parents, but when that's not available we need just one, and it's better to have your opposite gender for your one parent. Makes sense to me since we're geared to reproduce and live with your opposite gender (marriage). And please don't bring gay into this complicating even more.
