The frustration with what has happened to our country as expressed in Long Walk Home is even greater today as our politicians show their lack of concern for the good of the country with this insane battle over the debt ceiling. America's star is growing dimmer.
what a man! can make me laugh, cry, reflect on my life. "long walk home" is right up there with "thunder road" and "jungleland" that will have me weeping tears of joy as soon as i hear the first note. thank you Bruce for 30 years of happiness. what a fucking song..up there with his best..I think Magic is a fantastic album..love that guitar sound at 1'57,nothing quite like a Telecaster letting rip..
If you don't get that this song is about how Bush corrupted the sacred values of this country, and if you don't see that the "town" he's referring to is the US, and if you don't get that the line about the flag (that it stands for what we'll do and what we we WON'T) is a direct reference to the Bush/Cheney torture agenda, then you're just too stupid to listen to music. He's stating that the US is still a great country but, sadly, it's been made unrecognizable by Bush and his policies.
See--you just proved the point. You ARE too stupid to listen to music. Music is NOT about what YOU or anybody else wants it to be about--it's about what the ARTIST wants it to be about....remember the artist? The person that wrote it? Sorry, but you don't get to apply your own narrow viewpoint just because reality doesn't suit you. But heck--you probably think that "Born in the U.S.A." is a flag-waving pro-America anthem, right?
I never said the viewpoint doesn't suit me, I like the song, It's just pathetic to see guys like you, Starting internet fights over what the song means? And what makes you the local music expert? That gets to hand out judgments about everything?
I AM a music expert, and when I read comments like the ones below stating that this isn't a "political song," and "why can't people just keep their political statements to themselves," it makes me sick. This song IS a political song (as clearly stated by Springsteen on numerous occasions), and my original post makes that point. The manner in which I made my point was necessary because idiot conservatives don't understand subtlety. Nor, apparently, do they understand this song.
What an insightful, intelligent response. Your argument against me was so powerfully stated, it's hard to know where to begin my rebuttal. Let me start with this--what's a neo-con ape like you doing listening to a man of the people like Bruce? Shouldn't you be at a Michael W. Smith concert? While your idiot Bush was out there rolling back the constitution like it was carpet, Springsteen was doing all he could to provide the country with a voice of reason. Guess you weren't listening...
Thanks for your insight there doggie, I was wondering what the meaning of the song was but I have to agree, get off ya high horse. I love the song and its direction, cut the crap and celebrate one good thing out of the US.
If you actually read the lyrics to this song you'll understand that he's not talking politics. He's talking about coming back home and seeing the changes that his town had made in his absence. He's also adding in a little subtle reminder (at the very beginning of the song) about a love now lost...supposedly. We don't actually know what that little slip of paper said, but we can assume she was breaking up with him, or leaving him. So please, try to keep your political opinions to yourself.
Neither side, Repub or Democrat has done well in the last few years. They are all cheaters, and crooks with little understanding of what Americans in the heart of thier country want. and expect from them. . We should vote them all out and replace them with something that resembles what America once stood for.

This song was about how the Bush administration drew the USA away from its traditional roots of fairness, judicial process, and human rights for all. It was a song that decried what the Bush administration had done to the reputation of America by making Americans look to the world as something less than we once had been-a nation admired, that the rest of the world wanted to emulate or even to immigrate to. It's why he supported Obama so strongly. Thanks, Bruce for all you've done for 35 years!
TomUltranova : Thank you for explaining this! I read the lyrics and never would have guessed. I'm glad Obabama won. I hope he can undo some of the damage done by the previous eight year administration. It's going to be quite a job, and a "Long Walk Home."
The Bush administration made this country better, this whole "depression" that we're going to was going to happen, inevitably because of not backing up our money with gold, making our money just another piece of paper.
Also, Obama has spent 1.2 TRILLION dollars to this point, if not more, i'm not too up to date...
From Washington to W. Bush we've spent near HALF of that, and Obama, in his first 100 days, has spent 2x as much in 100 days then everyone else has in 219 years. Pitiful.
Who we are what we'll do and what we won't...............................to me i guess it means we are Americans greatest country in the world,we'll use all our strength and power to defend our great nation . What we won't do is torture and wire tap, we'll help eachother
love how his songs seem to change shape and go with the times.. this song is so revelant to todays global recession most of all in small towns.. but yet his lyrics draw hope the last verse especially "everybody has a neighbour, everybody has a friend.. everybody has a reason to begin again" you are lucky in this town
What makes a human a real citizen of the world isn´t the place where he was born but what he keeps inside his heart in a search for peace and a better place for everybody: black, white, muslims, jews, christians, hindus. Why is it important?? In fact, "long walk home" means the strong desire to find the best inside of ourselves to make the right difference in the world.

this song is obviously political in nature, the line:
"That flag flying over the court house means certain things are set in stone/who we are/what we'll do and what we won't"
spells it out pretty clearly. The long walk home of the title is referring how long it will take America to get back to its ideals.

Tom Waits is the ugly, risky prototype. Bruce is pop by comparison...but bloody great pop...

aw brucie. . .I'll wait up for ya aaaand walk you home!

Just watched Bruce on the super bowl. That seals it. Tom Waits is the best thing that happened to american music in the last 35 years.
sclogse1 3 years ago
what the fuck? why do you bring up springsteen and tom waits in the same sentence? Way different music...
redeyera 3 years ago 2
Remember Jersey Girl? That's a Tom Waits song. Paste magazine called Tom's tour last year the best show of the year. I caught it. I like his lyrics, and humor, and his courage. His theatrical side is great. And..Tom isn't going to Disneyland.
sclogse1 3 years ago
silly boy. Paul Weller is the best thing tht happened to world music in the last 35 years. Springsteen could challenge for that, but tom who?? go lick a stone.
