I can't remember the film, but I have heard Mel Gibson claiming that it "collectively blames humanity for the death of Jesus Christ." Perhaps this is the reason for the focus on Jesus's torture. Basically, "Jesus is perfect, now look what you've done."
The movie obviously did have a much greater audience than the last guest said. I also don't understand the notion that one would be a Christian, believe that Jesus suffered incredible tortures in order to save humanity, and yet someone would say that there's no point in trying to understand what that suffering was and what it entailed. If you believe Jesus was tortured and killed for you, then I don't see why you would dismiss what that torture and death meant, physically as well as spiritually

I don't so much see the violence in the movie as the problem, the problem is what agenda did Gibson have in making it.
