Fascinating article you have here! Sadly, I've only managed to hang onto a BBC B model as my parents chucked out the rest of my gear, thinking that I didn't want it any more (it was while I was at uni). I'm looking to complete a BBC system once more. The monitor that you used - was it fairly generic, like a Philips, that could fit an array of 80s computers, or was the BBC monitor quite specific? I simply can't remember :-( Was the cable circular at both ends? Thanks!
Thanks for the comments ;o) That monitor is a studio monochrome type that uses BNC connections as does the Beeb for composite video. The de-facto colour monitor was a Microvitec Cub (but there were plenty of other types too) and the RGB connector is a 6-pin DIN type. If you're getting back into Beebs, I suggest you sign up to the excellent and friendly forums at stardot.org.uk. If you ask on there, you might find any kit you're after. See you there then!
@f00landhism0ney You. Are. A. Star!! I didn't realise that there was a forum for us Beeb kids. I'll sign up and look out for you :-) I've been using BBCs for 12 years and PCs for 12 years, so I got a balance there, but my heart will always stay with the Beeb, and my aim is to re-live that <3
Hey no worries. I'm on there as MartinB and if you look at my other Tube vids you'll see that I'm fairly busy with Beeb stuff! You might well be amazed at the level of interest and the size of the Acorn community - fill yer boots ;o)
Wow, that's pretty cool. Did Acorn actually make a double disk drive with 3.5 inch and 5 1/2 inch disk drives, or did youbiuld that drive box yourself?
@Lachlant1984 : Hi and thanks for the comments. No, Acorn didn't produce a combo drive like that but some third-party manufacturers did towards the end of the Beeb era. I put the one in the video together - the 3.5" drive is just a standard PC drive which will fall back to Double Density (as required by the Beeb) if a DD disc is inserted although I have designed a mod for the Beeb to allow HD discs to be used.

You talk exactly like Rob Hubbard; Not just the accent, but the tone as well.
I bet you do music as a living. :)

Can you use a 51/4 instead of the 3.5 if the pc has the drive?
cutebikerwannabe 2 years ago
Yep, 5.25" drives are fine as long as your PC has one that can write 720k floppies.
