I was there when they built it. at mar bks 85 to 88. My ex wife was one of the first mgrs. Sucks how the place looks now. Used to be a great place to live.
@marcal1957 Hey i was there from 86-87 at mar bks i was on third floor of the barracks...was a great place to be i enjoyed my time there being ffrom wisc. i felt at home.
@Satoshi9801 The base began downsizing in 1994 and the facilities were closed in 1997. Population went from a robust 4,600 in 1990 to 316 in 2000, and then up to 326 in 2010. They received an $18 million hospital in 1990, just before the place began declining.
Wow it looks like they just locked the doors and left it. I wonder if all the equipment is still there or if it was removed. I could use that speaker unit and anything else electronic that was left behind. I'd either use it or rig the speaker so if someone drives up it plays the "go away, we're like closed" soundbite from Duke Nukem 3D.
I bet I could do something with that speaker. maybe make a cool iPod dock or something. Do you think it has an amp inside the box or just the speaker?
@coondogtheman1234 I think the amp unit might be inside the store. When I worked at Burger King 6 years ago, there was an indoor device that was on a post and it had the a 3" speaker and a 2 buttons on it. I believe the amp module was inside that device. When a car pulled up to that outdoor speaker that thing would beep.
@coondogtheman1234 When BK corp. updated the intercom system I saw the outdoor speaker unit by the dumpster and I wanted the speaker driver out of it, but someone beat me to it.
Bummer that sucks. the same thing happened to me I went to this abandoned junkyard behind my friends house and I found an old style phone handset and I wanted the earpiece speaker out of it but when I unscrewed the cover there was nothing inside, I was able to salvage the carbon microphone part. I no longer have that as this was a long time ago.
I remember when that place was being built. Everyone was so happy the day it opened up. Just about everyone came down for the grand opening. This was in 1986 and my 1st meal was a quarter pounder with fries and a coke. I felt very home sick that day.
We had 2 local McDonalds that closed down, they claimed because they couldn't get drive throughs. Neither were there for long. One was demolished, the other turned into an oriental restaraunt. Reminds me of the time me and a friend pulled up to a HOT and NOW window and founmd out it was closed.
Wow, kinda sad to see this... I lived on Adak from 1984 through 1986, and I remember when this McDonald's opened. Everyone was so excited about that! We made a lot of good friends and had some good times in those days. But when the big quake came in the spring of 86, we were ready to leave!!
We lived there from '89-'91. I remember getting pneumonia and turning down the hospital food (including lobster) the whole time and begging my parents to get me McD's from there. It's still the family joke, lol.
wow thank you so much for sharing this i grew up on adak my dad was in the navy i was there untill i was about 10 and this brought back so many memories of when my older sister would blackmale me into not "telling" on her....i got many a frys out of that lol
@WackbagChaos People would not vandalize it, its not New york city, It the middle of Adak, Alaska and boy, you have to have nerve to live there, I tried but the fishing got bad now I hear its good
I was stationed there from 1987 to 1992. Watching this video brings back alot of memories. Watching this drive through the drive-thru I got to see my back yard, the commissary, the exchange and the hospital where my oldest son was born. WOW, cant believe its a ghost town now.
Spent a very cold winter in 1988-89 with VP48 on Adak. Also spent many hours at the Mcdonalds. It's creepy to see it this way, looks like a ghost town now.
Normally, McDonald's real estate practices prevent the survival of a closed McDonald's building. Unlike other franchise operations, McDonald's directly owns the land and structures of its restaurants. If a restaurant fails, it thus is able--and very eager--to demolish the building. This prevents the iconic McDonald's structure from being associated with completely unrelated, and possibly sleazier, successor businesses. I guess they had a unique arrangement with the Navy.
@BrooklynBaller101: Adak used to be a large U.S. Navy base on a remote island in Alaska, with some 6,000 military personnel stationed there along with their families. All those people required their own town, which is where those buildings came from. After the Cold War ended, the base was closed, and there no longer were enough people to support all of those enterprises. See Wikipedia's article on Adak, Alaska for more.
Wow I was curious about what happen to Adak at this very moment and surprised to see vids. I went to Bob Reeve HS and lived right behind the Stevens elementary school. I think it was called "New Housing." back in the day. I played my first little league game there and my kid sister was born there.
