This is the earliest live *video* of Clapton after the Yardbirds clip. Its actually more in character to Clapton's true influence on modern guitar tone and style.
At this time, and in this place...Cream owned the world. They stood supreme at the top of Rock's Mt. Olympus...Thanx so very much for this incredible slice of history.
@latawie I bought Fresh Cream in early '67 right about the time of this recording and was absolutely blown away by the "Woman Sound" of Clapton's guitar and the blend of their voices. This was a period of innovation led by the Beatles and began reaching a new level in live performance by others like Hendrix at Monterey Pop and ultimately at Woodstock. Things were moving out of the studio and into anti Viet Nam war demonstrations attracting huge crowds. It was political as well as musical.
Talk about handling your instrument and playing together - thanks Ginger, Bruce - Clapton - This musik gives resonnance to everyone on earth that can hear - even today.
I love this song, so perfectly conceived and executed - Baker's extravagant drumming, Bruce's soulful agonized tenor/falsetto, the verse-long crescendos, the immediate yet minimalist lyrics - how can that not ever hurt you to your heart, to find out, somehow anyhow, this day, that your love is going wrong - that is True Blues
@varpeter01 Your evaluation I'm sure would be devastating to him if he saw it...I mean, look at what a marvelous career you've had at Jack in the Box or whatever minimum wage job you work at.
@sluv2600 All music splits and divides opinion, what fires one persons rockets may send another into a temporary depression, its always been this way.The sheer numbers of Erics supporters and fans over the decades puts him and his music firmly in the all time greats category.
If you truly believe that his guitar playing was and is "never that good" i suggest you learn to play a guitar yourself.
What? you already do?Im sorry mate but IVE NEVER HEARD OF YOU.
@Chubcatcher ... May I respectfully add that it's not really the music that divides, but rather the human ego with its endless comparisons and identifications.
@varpeter01 Clapton has alwaysbeen a good musican. He was chosen for Cream over John Maglauhlin in spite of his not being a jazz or fusion player because he has perfect intonation. He has shown up on time ready to play and done a good job forover 40 years. He is reliable enough that promoters have never had qualms about wether he would show up when ever and where ever ready to perform. These are all aspects of being a real musican instead of a wanker.
This video is sweet! Thanks for uploading! And is it just me or does Eric seem to be tripping? Not that I'd judge him, a lot of people were doing that at the time.
This is either the heaviest mellow song ever or the mellowest heavy song ever. Either way I've always loved it's dark disturbing mood. Awesome to see it live. Thanks for posting it.
Love Cream's stuff, good old hard rocking blues. Oh yer. I keep searching for more new stuff like this. Its hard to find. Came across a little band called DeepSeaGreen who are pretty good, though totally unknown. Not that it really matters. Anyone else know of new stuff in this vein
Clapton was the second person in London with that hair, and he got it because of Jimi, I watched him say that in an interview like 10 mins ago... so shhh.
Clapton met Hendrix in 66, before what you see above, and I am going to take a wild leap here and suggest Hendrix had an afro style hair style before Clapton did.
Hendrix hairstyle wasn't Afro yet. That came later. Both Hendrix and Clapton copied Bob Dylan's hairstyle. Jimi said he used to use hair curlers to get that look.
Of course he naturally had a Fro you effin' moron. A fro is the default of hair for people of African descent. The fro was adapted in the 60's as a way of no longer embracing hair styles of whites in the black community. It was a way of getting back to their roots, (no pun intended). The word comes from the word "Afro" as in "Afro-American," as meaning an American of African descent.
The style was based on no longer treating one's hair to make it straight as in whites...
you guys, clapton even said in an interview he got a perm to try and look like hendrix. ive read many bios and they all say after he met jimi he went back to jack and ginger and suggested that one of them should have a fro and they werent going to do it.
Huckleberry got it right... Jack just let it out live. This was the popular thing to do then. Nice and pretty in the studio, and wild, compulsive ad lib in concert. Rarely doing the same song the same way live.....
I don'[t know how old all you people are but you have to remember that when this was filmed there was no such thing as stage monitors.you could'nt hear athing you were singing.think about that the next time you see a clip of the beatles singing in perfect harmony in front of ascreaming audience.
@Huckleberryj - thanks and absolutely correct. The reason the Beatles were so incredibly right on in concert is because they had played 3 sets a night 7 nights a week in Hamburg and had become as tight as possible before they became famous. McCartney has said several times that they absolutely could not hear themselves while in concert at Shea Stadium or anywhere else.
This is great historical footage, thank you for posting it!
@GWENKER so true... and what about effects on guitars, i mean today it's quite easy to get a very good tone with loads of effects. Back in the day you had to plug in and go... all in the fingers
@Huckleberryj absolutely - and why is it so many of today's 'artists' can't sing in tune live even when they have 'in-ear' monitors? Watch the old clips of Cream/John Mayall etc appearing on USA shows where they had to mime - they hated it, because they were real musicians, and miming was considered an insult to their ability.
Wasn't that a part of the reason that the Beatles quit playing live...? Their audiences became so big and loud they couldn't hear themselves on stage any more, and with the equipment back in the day, it wasn't possible to go much louder.
@Huckleberryj Yep! they were just hearing it in their heads with just distorted drums through the noise to keep time with. Monitors were rare! I love their dark stuff! 'Deserted Cities Of The Heart' is in a similar vein. Love to have seen 'em. I think many don't realise the conditions on stage in those days. They are too used to TV studios of the now producing AUTOTUNED music. For it is not only vocals that are AUTOTUNED(bless Adele for not using it on her last single btw.hope it will inspire)

Well, Kanye West. The Black Eyed Peas, probably all of the rappers who think they can sing. People do use it live all the time. Certainly Jack Bruce could have used it here since his intonation is atrocious. Don't get me wrong, I love Cream. I played Cream covers in my band back when most of you were still sucking on your mom's teat.

You're an idiot. I made a joke about Jack Bruce being out of tune, which you admit, and you make a comment about nobody using Auto Tune live, and I proved you wrong. Now you're wishing me a nice death. Well, fuck you. Fuck you very much.
Well, whatever the problem with Bruce's vocal is, it's certainly not up to the level of quality of his studio work. It does still sound out of tune though through much of it.

Clapton's trying to be so badass ala Hendrix. I've only seen him kind of stand around while he plays, but here he's pretty animated. 3:05, wow! And then at 4:04 he looks a wee bit insane.
I always hated him with that perm, I preferred it later when it was straight and practically in his eyes.
There is Jack Bruce looking beautifully handsome and sounding like the greatest of the great, which is what he was and is and always will be, the cream of The Cream.
Everybody is all googaa about Clapton's perm, but the first thing I notice when I watch this (and I apologize in advance if I am not the first one to notice this) is his.............well..............
Ype, Clapton can sowl all he likes, but he doesn't look badass in the perm. Never liked this song vocally or lyrically, but the playing is good. Dig the Longhorn bass!
oh awesome ... clapton, one of those dudes with no truly recognizable faces ... always showing up recent years with different faces ... here, working on a very early version ... comments herewith not a mock, just technical comment
i love this song... jack sang it so well, and the drums simply make the song. it REALLY could use some keys though, for it very much lacking composure, then again, they were a trio supergroup :\
fun fact: Eric Clapton wanted Steven Winwood to join Cream as a keyboard player! imagine how freakin' awesome that would have been!!
it's also cool that Ginger is using one normal drumstick and one hammerthingy (sorry i dont know the name, i dont play drums)
Clapton had his hair permed around April 1967. Jack Bruce is credited as saying that Eric wanted one of the band to have a perm (presumably to look like Hendrix) but Bruce declined. Now he says in retrospect he is glad he didn't get a perm as he has "seen the photos".
Something I've noticed in these two clips from the Paris Pop Festival . Bruce is on the right side of the stage while Clapton is on the left side , in all the other video clips , of Cream , including the 2005 reunion concerts Bruce was on the left while Clapton was on the right side of the stage .
Interesting observation . I've got to wonder too as to why Clapton and Bruce were on opposite sides of the stage from where they usually were . Also why was your comment marked as Spam ? It looks like a valid comment to me .
what an electrifying performance...clapton was really into it which I have never seen before during a live show. Ginger is a master and Jack's basslines are sick

you can tell hendrix had arrived in England by then!! Check out erics afro and tryin to copy his moves... if you see cream at the albert hall he had given up by then.. I guess cream had given up by then though..
While the hairstyle and clothes were influenced by Hendrix, the stage moves were not (otherwise he'd play with his teeth and set his guitar on fire). Clapton has always been inconsistent; if he's (presumably) in a good mood he'll be energetic on stage, and if he's in a bad/nervous mood he'll stand still more.
Know exactly what you mean - that tone makes the hairs on the back of my neck shoot up. You can literally feel the emotion in his playing and no I don't do drugs haha!

Is Clapton wearing a wig during this period or is it a perm? Serious question.
4rainbowed 2 years ago
Perm. Apparently he wanted to copy Jimi that much. Question is, if Jews have Jewfros, what do misguideed hippies have?

oh awesome ... clapton, one of those dudes with no truly recognizable faces ... always showing up recent years with different faces ... here, working on a very early version ... comments herewith not a mock, just technical comment

i love this song... jack sang it so well, and the drums simply make the song. it REALLY could use some keys though, for it very much lacking composure, then again, they were a trio supergroup :\
fun fact: Eric Clapton wanted Steven Winwood to join Cream as a keyboard player! imagine how freakin' awesome that would have been!!
it's also cool that Ginger is using one normal drumstick and one hammerthingy (sorry i dont know the name, i dont play drums)
WHAT KINDA BASS DOES JACK HAVE?

i dont know who THAT is, but im SUR he couldn't sing as well as Jack :P he's my favorite singer next to winwood and clapton(growlin' blues :))

John Entwhistle of The Who...but Jack's good, man..respect
cartman203 2 years ago 2
Clapton had his hair permed around April 1967. Jack Bruce is credited as saying that Eric wanted one of the band to have a perm (presumably to look like Hendrix) but Bruce declined. Now he says in retrospect he is glad he didn't get a perm as he has "seen the photos".

The 60's had great groups like Cream while today we get garbage like the Jones Brothers . By the way why was my earlier comment mark as Spam ?

Great rare video , hope someone can find more footage from that concert . Cream is the best .

Something I've noticed in these two clips from the Paris Pop Festival . Bruce is on the right side of the stage while Clapton is on the left side , in all the other video clips , of Cream , including the 2005 reunion concerts Bruce was on the left while Clapton was on the right side of the stage .
Highpoint211 2 years ago 4
Interesting observation . I've got to wonder too as to why Clapton and Bruce were on opposite sides of the stage from where they usually were . Also why was your comment marked as Spam ? It looks like a valid comment to me .
uv22dac 2 years ago 2
Why was Highpoint211's comment marked as Spam ? I think he had a good point with his comment about the sides of the stage Clapton and Bruce were on .

what an electrifying performance...clapton was really into it which I have never seen before during a live show. Ginger is a master and Jack's basslines are sick

you can tell hendrix had arrived in England by then!! Check out erics afro and tryin to copy his moves... if you see cream at the albert hall he had given up by then.. I guess cream had given up by then though..
NEVERSTOPJAMIN 3 years ago
While the hairstyle and clothes were influenced by Hendrix, the stage moves were not (otherwise he'd play with his teeth and set his guitar on fire). Clapton has always been inconsistent; if he's (presumably) in a good mood he'll be energetic on stage, and if he's in a bad/nervous mood he'll stand still more.

Know exactly what you mean - that tone makes the hairs on the back of my neck shoot up. You can literally feel the emotion in his playing and no I don't do drugs haha!
