Went to that race in `85 with my family and also to the Southern 500 where he won the Winston Million. Those were the days.. Awsome Bill was the man!

Awesome Bill was so great in 1985, but it was surprising that he did not win the championship that year.

His downfall was the short tracks...and they had a number of mechanical problems later in the year. They DESERVED the championship, but Darrell Waltrip just had more consistent finishes over the course of the season...

His transmission failed him in the early laps of the last race of the season at Riverside. He was only behind DW by a couple of dozen points before Riverside. Ricky Rudd won the race in the #15 Bud Moore Motorcraft Thunderbird. I've still got my flag to flag VHS tape.
