  • We can find gaps in the whole course the important thing is how as teachers deal with it and for doing that we have to know the students needs so we can resolve it succesfully..

  • the gap is the two sides of the coin the real aspect that we have right now and where we want to go and how are we going to spine of our project

  • In the previous video we were talking about finding solutions, well that solution would be for the gap, once we identify where the Ss are and were they are required to be (either by us, their parents, the school, etc), we would be able to come up with appropriate solutions to 'fill the gap'.

  • That's when we should keep a diary of all the pros and cons about a given course, in order to modify it later, or we could also meet those needs by asking previous teachers about their course. The point is to get to know the students' background.

    Bernardeth, keeping a diary can help in identifying student needs and abilities. Talking with former teachers can help as well. But defining behavioral objectives and determining the gap between the learners' current ability and the desired outcome can involve other measures of learner abilities.

  • when we are making a project like lesson plans or designing a course we need to know where the students are so we can have realistic goals with the class through realistic solutions to make a progress.

  • when we design our project we need to identify how much students know about the language they will learn, to identify the progress they will make at the end of the course.

  • The gaps we find in language teaching specifically in the design face, are first of all not knowing exactly the areas that our students should work on, in other words we can find a gap at the beginning of a course and then another one at the end of I,t which makes us modify our whole course design.

  • So, besides analyzing our target group' skills, we have to determine what kind of skills we want them to achieve in order to satisfy the stakeholders' needs.

    there is a lot to analyze. I realyze that to plan a course is a harder than Ithoght. But I am glad to get all this knowledge so I will know what to do when planning a course for Specific pursposes.

    And... That language assesing test that you and Yaham where talking about could be a profiency test?

  • @emilycolk Emily, actually you raise an important issue. The answer to your question about a proficiency test is "It all depends." That is it all depends on what outcome you desire to achieve based on your needs analysis. For example your needs analysis might indicate that for some reason the learners need to prove a certain level of grammar knowledge without necessarily proving proficiency. In that case a test of grammar knowledge would be just fine.

    A good language assessment test would be an excellent measure of the LEARNING needs assuming that through the rest of your needs analysis you have determined what kind of learning outcome or language performance you need to achieve to meet the needs of the learners and/or the major stakeholders. So the results of the pre-test would define one side of the gap. Then you could administer a post test to determine of the specific learning goals have been met.
