Call me crazy, I don't think the drummer really stole much from Portnoy, I think after Dominici got the boot from DT he liked some aspects of it and carried it over in his own band.

Playing with conviction and heart is much more important then how crazy fast you can go or what time signatures you can play. at least give him credit for being solid.

a lot of metal/progressive rock drummers use their toms as extensions of the bass drum. tuning them "properly" would spread them too far into the treble range and defeat the sound theyre attempting to achieve. plus that "proper" type of tuning doesnt sound good under high compression. Even mike portnoy only actually starts to properly tune in the upper range.

and those arent triggered lol...looks more like dampening gels with mics over them

Well, what can we say ? Portnoy redefined the way Prog metal is played, this guy went a little too out of his way to be like his obvious idol, but the best compliment I can say is in a blind test I would swear this is a slightly tired Portnoy. The fill at the end is exagerated, you could copy-paste it at the end of The Glass Prison, it would fit right in :o)

The kit is overkill, too, but everyone saw that.
