  • Brilliant drummer

  • Many people play this groove including me and think they do it well (not me). I've heard very few execute the subtleties and perfection that Jeff did on this song. It's all in the shuffle an ghost notes both of which take a lifetime to master.

  • 16 people are deaf....

  • genius....

  • best snare ever

  • And that's the basic groove... So that is how easy it is... Hmmmmmm haha :). R.I.P Jeff Porcaro, his body laid to rest but his legend lives on, we miss you.

  • Miss You Jeff. Best drummer ever

  • I could listen to 2:13 - 2:30 looped all day

  • Really!

  • Who the hell disliked this?

    Idiots!

    ;-)

  • It takes incredible coordination to do this, this guy was a genius! RIP.

  • I can do this :D I practiced a lot yesterday, and I learned it on an hour or something! :D It's feels so good to play! I can't wait to try it on a real drum kit!

  • fuking genius! you hear him every day and you dont even know it!!!

  • Wow he was wicked! I'm a bass player.

  • ...so THAT'S the basic groove!

    CLEARLY!

  • one of the BEST drummer who ever lived.....R.I.P.

  • He looks like Christopher Walken with hair... Fantastic drummer!

  • .R.I.P. Jeff Porcaro, you were one of the best drummers in the world!!!!!

  • That's just fantastic!

  • Man I love hybrids, they are just so potent!

  • wow that is a heck of a killer sound on his bass drum

  • i like that the guy had no problem explaining where he got this groove.

  • I can't that fusion bullshit song that he is playing in the other video, but this is fucking great. I like the guy's attitude, and I love his playing. I wish more english drummers played with power and skill - we used to have great drummers.

  • Sorry, I should have proof read - I meant to write a stand after that can't. I also wish more english people could read and write properly, like we used to. ha.

  • il maestro dei groove

  • 2:01

Now i´m gonna add the shuffle figure... BOOT!

  • hey, i loved jeff! loads!!! feel free to check out my page, a few videos of me drumming to some toto numbers.......including rosanna! rosanna shuffle all the way!!! xxxx

  • Amazing Snare !!!

  • one word LEGEND

  • '' That's the basic groove ''

    hmm.... yeah, maybe

  • There is NO WAY I could EVER do that. I've got two Master's and three Bachelor degrees. I just can't comprehend the coordination it takes to play like that. Remarkable.

  • @frankrizzo51 This must be like flying a jet!

  • Jeff Porcaro was a BEAST!! He and Lewis Johnson did some wicked stuff together on Michael Jackon's off the wall album.

R.I.P. Jeff!! You were truly one of the masters.

  • No matter what i do and how hard I practice, I can't make it sound as awesome as he does!!

  • too easy

  • Drum & Drummer

  • fuuuaark that right hand pattern is off tap, shows how effective the moeller technique is huh

  • Comment removed

  • notice how much "heavier boham's beat is than purdie's, shit than man had a strong right foot

  • jeff is one of the all time top drummers.............top 5...

    to bad he's gone

  • He is playing 12/8 on the hi-hats and 4/4 on base and snare great drummer r.I.p

  • 15 people don't know the key to the right hand of porcaro

  • #1000 lol

  • Legend

  • fuck me o.O that's insane!!!

  • ...."that's the basic groove". Are you kidding me Jeff?

    What genius!

  • This guy is kind of good, but he's no Ringo Starr

  • @kewkabe WTF is Starr against Porcaro?

  • @kewkabe

Ringo wouldn't qualify to carry Jeff's shit striped boxers to the laundry!!! They are two completely different players!

  • his ghost notes are creepy lol

  • Even if he didn't played with a hugh drumset.

Jeff Porcaro was, is and will be one of the best drummers.

  • Shit!!!!

  • HE COPIED? wow, he's a pirate!

  • One the best. PERIOD.

  • It's a great beat.

  • EVERYDAY HE'S SHUFFLIN'

  • Jeff was a very nice guy from all I can tell.. Sux he died so young.. his drumming inspires a lot of people.

  • For me, the best recorded groove ever. Jeff was simply the best.

  • AW SHIT! THIS GUY WAS WAY BEYOND AWESOME!

  • ESTO NO ES NADA COMPARADO CON "SLABON" DE NECOCHEA, PARA MAS INFO, BUSCAR "NAGUALES ROCK"...ABRAZOS CARNALES!

  • @Pabluzz87 noi creo que nadie pusiera atencion en tu mensage bro only english jejejeje pero voy a ver ese video que tu dices man saludos

  • a magic groove the best shuffle to play is Rosanna shuffle!

  • i m the biggest bonham fan , but this guy is legendary too

    great drummer !

  • Great beat!

  • remarkable!

  • Bernard Purdie! Babylon sisters shake it! Sax does that descending thing... damn I love that song.

I met Bernard at NAMM once, seen him play his shuffles on the floor, jeepers, its like just indescribable...

Amazing - Rosanna is Pretty Purdie, Babylon Sisters, Zep Fool Rain, Bo Diddley. How cool is that. I love how great songs are somehow connected like musical siblings.

  • He really was a true master of this craft.

  • rip

watch that video /watch?v=YBJg4gERFLY of me jammin over a beatle song

  • Yes that is the basic grrove. With practice, its not so hard.

  • @Arnechk You're right, it's not so hard, but it IS hard to make it sound as good as Jeff. Phillips is no way near.

  • @BillBrolse And you are correct. Only Jeff could do it with the right feeling.

  • "That's the basic groove" hahahaha it makes me wanna kill myself :)

  • @cheezer20004: the notation is on toto's website under jeff's profile-->drum patterns

  • His voice is cool.

  • sounds like a hip hop beat

  • @NavySealWannabe67 i think you mean hip hop beats sound like this

  • The coolest drum beat in history period.

  • If I had a right wrist like that I'd never leave the house.

  • @Kizmotron that's hilarious!!!

  • me falaram que ele tocava bem

  • can someone who understands this notate it?

  • @cheezer20004

Google "Rosanna beat" and look on google images. it'll be in the first ten results.

  • @cheezer20004 Check out the Groove Library blog.

  • this video helped me out so much, I've seen the full thing. It's great and Jeff really does explaing and break things down well. He is a true master of his instrument.

  • Man, that foot moves smooth.

  • what kind of wood is that drumset?

  • @daviddrum95

it is a pearl mlx he is playing, so it is maple

  • @daviddrum95 Birch, maple,...basswood.........does it matter that much? It's how you play it that matters most!

  • Are you kidding? Dude, I bet Bonham and Porcaro are in heaven looking down and laughing at you idiots who think they were competing with each other. They were totally different drummers. Let's face it, for better or for worse, they both could not take each other's place. Don't be a dick. RIP.

  • @zep4life Dont take offence please, but is Jeff dead?

  • @AlanM11Drums Yes.

  • I m more impressed by Achilles Last Stand. Not only is THAT song a monumental classic but Bonham reigns there.

Even better drummer, listen for example to Live In Japan by Deep Purple is Ian Paice. : )

  • Bonham's version is much more technical than jeff explained and blows this very cool version of Jeff's away however. That's because Bonham was way more talented as a drummer than jeff ever would or could be.

  • @realdrummer110 bullshit. Jeff is as technically talented as Bonhan and nobody can assume otherwise.

  • @Jovishovis Wrong!!! Show me a drum solo to refute.

  • @realdrummer110 - Jeff and John are two different players. Neither one could play each others music and "improve" on the sound. I guarantee that Bonham would NOT have sounded good playing Rosanna or I Keep Forgetting by Michael McDonald. Just as Porcaro wouldn't have sounded good playing the Wantan Song or Good Times Bad Times. Quit freaking comparing!

Next we will have some idiot bringing in Neil Peart or Travis Barker.

  • @realdrummer110 I don't think John Bonham would agree...

  • @realdrummer110

You must be both deaf and dumb. Music is not about competition. Bonham had his thing put I guess Porcaros credits speaks for it self.

  • 10 people who dislike this video are not drummers or musicians of any type. Jeff's playing has been admired and copied for decades, and you can't go 3 hours of listening to the radio without hearing one of Jeff's grooves. He's played on over 1000 songs and he's been the drummer on dozens of #1 hits for a reason - he's a master drummer of perfect timing, tasty fills and incredible grooves.

  • @PBSTL42 so true,, so true... incredible drummer!

  • @PBSTL42 Jeff is King

  • ouch

  • 10 people are jealous

  • The Bonzo's shuffle uses kick on 1 / 2 / 3and / 6and (in "fool in the rain" studio record) exactly as the original Purdie shuffle (with less ghosts notes)

Jeff here uses kick in 1 / 3and / 5and / 6and / 9and (in 2 beats of 6/8) and he call it "Bonham shuffle" but he was wrong.

Anyway Porcaro has created a brand new shuffle that will remain in the history as the best shuffle ever.

  • He also picked up a lot from his Dad Joe Porcaro, as he was a world renowned drum teacher.Jeff was Truly Wonderful.

  • notice how Jeff drops the bass drum on the backbeat in the second measure of the phrase .... if you are learning this groove , that kick / snare together is a MUST

  • 2.32 "Thats the basic groove" yeah Jeff, very basic....

  • Amazingly textured but clean. Nothing gets in the way of the rhythm. "Rosanna" only appeals to two kinds of people, drummers and dancers. Both can thank Jeff.

  • Groove master par excellence!! Even Phillips can't groove that good although he's a master of his domain.

  • It's from 1988

  • Anyone know what year this video is from?

  • Awesome half time shuffle!

  • David Paich played piano and organ on the Seals and Crofts "Diamond Girl" album. One of the drummers used on that album is Jeff Porcaro.

  • He toured with Boz Scaggs, before co-founding Toto with his brother Steve and childhood friends Steve Lukather and David Paich.

  • his technical understanding on how to put a beat together is amazing

  • omg why does everyone has to mention justin bieber. everytime i look at a good music video someone has to mention his name. if ur going to comment than i want to talk about jeff porcaro not this little poof.

  • Notice how he gives credit where credit is due...Very humble, sign of a true master.

  • To All:

I have noticed some drummers actually DOUBLE tap their snare (on the 2nd and 3rd note of each triplet rather than only on the 2nd note) during the shuffle. For a good example see MVKbzLW6HQ0 video and go to :53 into the solo and watch his left hand closely-it sounds awesome. BTW you have to set the viewing down to 240p (from the default 360p) to hear this for some strange reason. (Curious what you think!)

    -Drumman

  • @thedrumman7 You're obviously a drummer who knows what he's talking about. Very keen on the details. I thought I was the only one who noticed that. :))

  • Genial musician, elegant drummer.

  • Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro (April 1, 1954 – August 5, 1992) was an American session drummer and a founding member of the Grammy Award winning band Toto. Porcaro was one of the most recorded drummers in history. While already an established studio player in the 1970s, he shot to prominence in the US as the drummer on the Steely Dan album Katy Lied.

  • sounds like all Purdie shuffle to me

  • this song is a cake walk

  • this is the best drum machine ever ....JP...forever

  • @nuaurea check out the Denis Chambers version.. sick as hell. youtube.com/watch?v=PwUt_kHOZTY&feature=related

  • See more on Jeff Porcaro on SoulDrummers . com

  • brilliant drummer

  • Damn insecticide!

  • I have that same Pearl free floating snare!

RIP Jeff..... Hope there's a nice kit wherever you are.

  • Great Jeff Porcaro!

True musicians like him make the difference between great articulate music forms and heavy metal redundant garbage.

  • @vampiroangelico The nail on the head brother...

  • thank you jeff...and john bonhan on fool in the rain (awesome drums)

  • Anyone else feel like an ass thinking they could play the song then watched this vid and went, fuck sake haha rip Jeff, best of the best.

  • @drummerboybill94 hahaha definitely man

  • i will practice this beat a million times before it sounds half as good as when jeff played it. RIP jeff

  • Pure genious

  • its a real shame... :/

  • See more about studio drummers on SoulDrummers . com.

  • Mean ass groove!

  • not sure - but where does the hi-hat lift for the bonham shuffle go exactly? I can hear it but i can't explain it in drum-speak. I'm a guitarist which means i wish i was a drummer. But that hi-hat lift in the bonham thing is, for me, the spice that makes that beat. I'd never question Jeff though - I know its' just an example of the basic beat. Don't take this as any disrespect.

  • The best part is 2:14 because it's a rare time where you hear Porcaro playing his shuffle uninterrupted and solo!

  • good God that's a lot of Telefunkens.

  • Check out Jeff Porcaro RIP being honored on SoulDrummers . com

  • its mad that bonzo and jeff are no longer with us...the two practitioners of the purdie shuffle..ah well.. RIP John and Jeff.

  • @The12ozBucket By Purdie....he meant Bernard Purdie of Steely Dan. I can agree with your sentiment thoguh.

  • @The12ozBucket ...and after reading your post again, I realise that you knew that you knew that already. Don't mind me.

  • gotta like him,, so cool

  • hmmm Justin Bieber must have made 9 accounts and disliked this vid...

  • @IAusDrummerI Shut up why the hell would you even mention his disgraceful name

  • Lol at the last thing he says. "That's the basic groove." Yeah right.

  • earlier today I played along to both Fool in The Rain and Home At Last, and just watched this video like 2 or 3 times, got the beat down in easily less than a minute. boo-ya! those are all great grooves

  • This is one of the most difficult grooves to play... Jeff makes it look so easy!!

  • Are the 1st 3 beats of the "Shuffled/Bo Diddley-rhythm" that he plays on his bass drum at 1:06.. is that a quarter-note-triplet?? (thanks!)

  • Porcaro is on Soul Drummers . com

  • Porcaro lived down the street from me in North Hollywood when I was a kid. We used to swim in our friend’s pool directly across the street from Jeff's house and would sometimes go over to his house after swimming and watch him jam. I thought he sucked because he wasn't in KISS! Hey what can I say, I was only about 8 years old.

  • Finally got this one down tonight!!! "What a great beat indeed"....

  • HOLY FUCK this beat is just sensational.

  • when did he die ? how did it happen? seems healthy

  • @benmdnp755 he died of a heartattack after inhaling to much insecticide

  • @benmdnp755 Dude he died in 1992... Cheers!

  • Comment removed

  • @benmdnp755 He accidentally inhaled a large amount of insecticide while weeding his garden, but as a couple others mentioned, he had a coke-weakened heart, and all of it together induced a fatal heart attack. Died in '91 or '92, can't recall which.

  • @fieryred70 August 5 1992. Remember it like yesterday. Was and still is the true master of groove.

  • Major boner on this shit...dude.u rockkkkkkk

  • Yikes! When you hear things isolated it becomes crystal clear! I like both Babylon Sister and Fool in the Rain, but to hear those beats in isolation... Wow!!! It just jumps out at you why Purdie, Bonham and JP are who they are, and why!

  • Funny, I just posted on my Facebook wall a tirade about my LONGING for ISOLATED tracks for EVERY single intstrument.. on EVERY single song... by EVERY artist..EVER recorded.. All of 'em!!! keys/horns/bass/drums.... I even want the COWBELL to be isolated.. so I can more easily break it down.. pick it apart and misunderstand it all! :-) hahaa!

  • The King in Drumming R.I.P.

  • This just makes me smile, I am a guitarist and been into music all my life, this is such a song, and It also made me listen to the drums more and I suppose appreciate how amazing percussion can be... thats not just playing drums thats making it an art.

  • jeff porcaro is very good drum

  • sounds like lewis black has another side to him

  • nice voice!

  • I got this groove down like a mother fucker awww yeee!

  • BRAVO JEFF

  • im learning this atm.. awesome

  • I've got it .... Great drumming terrible song.

  • RIP Jeff

  • There is something special about this but I can't put my finger on it ?
