  • The middle back-up is quite exquisite!

  • this song was recorded 1976. soooo ahead of its time. brilliant. timeless.

  • Geeze Kevin you sound like a very deep person . Write a book. Now herington can play the music exactly how the original recording sounded or with a personal twist I have seen him sevral times. Seems like the shows Have their own signature. As do all live performances. I'm so glad I get that.

  • @1vettal2012 : now that I've written it?????

  • This tune brings me to tears.....of joy.....

  • Saw them a few weeks ago in NY, Beacon theater sounding just like this. I'll always love the original but I now find this one to be the one I like to listen to. I think Carlock's drums have a lot to do with it, and Herrington pays homage, but makes it his own, he's not just covering, he's contributing. At the very start, Carlock lags that lead-in crash ever so slightly, and boosts every chorus that way too. They are better now posters, let go of history and go with it!

  • Who the hell dislikes steely dan??

  • Where was that classic ending, one of the greatest ever? You can't knock Jon Herrington though, an amazing player.

  • Thank you so much for these videos. To the BEST BAND EVER!

  • montreal,, says,, thank-you-,,, steely-dan******

  • I remember the first time I heard this song was when I was driving along in my car and as soon as I heard it, I just cranked the radio. One of Steely Dan's best!

  • 5 dslikes???

  • donald fagen looks like he's in pain just singing.

  • solosolosolosolosolo. Uno dei più bei assSSOLLI del mondo. L'ho detto!

  • Saw them in StL as well... the Fox at it's best!! Unreal show!!

  • @yzguy01250 Thinkin about expanding my horizons and going to see Tony Bennet nov. 11 at the Fabulous Fox . I love that theater.

  • @charlesruby79 I'm seeing Santana there on Tuesday night... that shoudl be pretty sick!!

  • Saw them last night in St louis . It was great !

  • @charlesruby79 Jealous!

  • @charlesruby79 sick! Great band

  • @pjicleanair420 I like four note chords

  • Saw them last night at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Al. Awesome show!

  • John is in the same league as Larry Carlton, but didn't take the time to learn the intro or solos note-for-note, he's just good enough to get an idea from the original and still do it justice. I don't really like how he did the intro at this show, but I've seen him rip it at others. Larry played this perfect when I saw them at The Beacon, but he was kinda half-assed for Reelin' because it wan't his song and he was winging it mostly. I just saw them at CMAC and John ripped Reelin' note-for-note.

  • evidently, 5 people wish to be taken alive.

  • these days, they'd be labeled "terrorists" for a song like this. Gawd, I miss the "good old days" lol.

  • I'm merely a drummer so forgive my opinining on this subject but whoever said that the solos HAVE GOT to be note for note is living in a colorless world...

  • I've seen an awful lot of bands over the years. Nobody can touch these guys live when they bring their "A" game ... which is EVERY show. They wouldn't tour for years back in the 70's mainly because Donald was not happy with the reproduction of the studio tunes in a live situation. Luckily for all of us, he lightened up ...now, I repeat; NOBODY can touch this unit live ... NOBODY.

  • The Royal Scam is probably their best album. This video is not bad considering how far this removed from the original. I'm glad they are still out there

  • I wonder if Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison or John Belushi would agree that drugs were good? Or how about all the people who have died from veneral disease? What kind of comment was that?

  • @debbydoo2008 I agree with you entirely however there was a time during the 1960s and early 1970s when it was considered a good thing to dabble in drugs.

It "expanded ones mind" to dabble in LSD..reached areas of the subconscious.(not that i agree with this)

Similar to the 1930s-1950s when smoking tobacco was a "healthy" pastime.(consider those early smoking ads)

  • steely . best crew ever..

  • Larry Carlton's leads are the "signature" for ALOT of these songs.

TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW FOR ANY GUIITARIST.

Sorry but the leads HAVE GOT TO BE "note-for-note".

  • @regmoe : that's why you're an accountant....

  • Hey, all is forgiven. Mad dog surrender...

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We agree, taildragger.

And hotlip...you're free to disagree. Everyone has the right to be wrong sometimes. ;-)

  • Fagen still rules ! - And Herrington is doing a fine job here ! - I do not agree with chazzbro !...

  • hear, hear, SD54– top shelf

caught them coupla years ago in SF and was jubilant (as were wife & then-12-year-old son, who's now starting to understand how lucky he is_)

what can i say? from the team that made the only perfect records that moved me (dyed-in-the-wool muso)

ummm, is this the Masonic late show? rather expected to hear some deafening claps from stage left - moi, naturellement…

  • Pine Knob....Fagen's lips...yes ...the world is revolving as it should...

  • Your comment proves nothing in regard to my comments. I only commented on his work on this song. I don't know enough about him to speak about the overall value of his work. But, having seen the Aja retrospective...about how hard they worked to find the perfect guy who could fill the holes on the album...it's unfortunate that they had to settle for work this poor. That being said, maybe much of his other work is great. I was only watching this video.

  • I wish they would release a killer live dvd already. It seems like they've been touring non-stop since Everything Must Go came out. They've got to have some awesome footage piled up by now. They released a pretty cool dvd when Two Against Nature came out, but that was in 2000. They also released the making of Aja on dvd. So, apparently they're not against releasing dvd's. Maybe one will be relased eventually. In the meantime I guess I'll just have to keep listening to all their great material.

  • Wow memories I had a band in 1980 from Montreal called "Melange" we did a trip down the US to Virginia Newport News and got flown to Guantanamo Bay by the US Navy our keyboardist was american Warren B Seale (awesome keys)hence the gig ...

this song & Kid Charlemagne were in our repertoire thanks love this band & Fagen to death..

  • The Herrington guitar work is terrible compared to any major guitarist. He neither copied Carlton well nor made it his own...either one would have been acceptable. As to the comment that Carlton isn't that great live, either. ..what an incredibly ignorant statement! Try watching (KpSpYoX4x-U) and making that statement. Carlton is letter-perfect live about 33 years after the original.

  • @chazzbro He must be doing something right. He's been playing with them since "Two Against Nature."

  • @chazzbro Larry Carlton is a very hard man to follow.

Once you've heard him nobody else quite matches up.

  • @taildragger53 : not for John Herrington..he's definitely in the same league....they're both gr8 players..you need to loosen up...music's not like barracking for a team...it's a ever shifting collegiate experience....

  • @kevinherbert For someone like me who has seen people like Wes Montgomery & Jimi Hendrix LIVE i'm afraid it's gonna take alot more than just Mr Herrington, however good you imagine him to be.

    He's good but nothing special.

When you 've got 16 yr old girls like JezzyLewis on here who can sink most players i think it maybe you who needs to become more open minded.

  • @taildragger53 : I suggest you get yourself a lesson in social discourse old son, 'cos you come across as a bombastic freekin' know it all, hanging off the shirttails of talented musicians, and having the temerity to impose your cigar box values over them.......what a monumental, lightweight you are...a real YOU DROOB contributor...

  • @taildragger53 : you're an old accountant surely...some things are more than IN versus OUT...apparently that's beyond you...comparing Wes to Jimi or Herro..what a sad sack you must be.....I sp'ose a rose is more beautiful than an a orchid...according to you....

  • @kevinherbert It's such a long time ago that i've forgotten what i'd said but iof you'd actually SEEN Wes & Jimi live like i have then maybe you'd be in a better position to comment.

Until then, just dream on. Who's the loser here?

  • @kevinherbert You tell me to loosen up and cool it and yet it looks like it's YOU who is getting abit hot under the collar.( ha ha!!)

It's a shame that just an ordinary blogger on here manages to push your buttons.

If i'm such a loser then WHY keep sending me obnoxious and pseudo-intellectual ramblings?

You need THERAPY mate! You should realise we ALL have our own opinions and are FREE to express them.

If you don't like it , go live in Iran!

  • @kevinherbert You call me a sad sack! (LOL) Why don't you go and view some more of your porn clips on your ytube profile and leave the serious music comments to us on here.

  • @taildragger53 : it's clear from your 3 responses to my critiques, within 2 hours, that as you become more juiced/stoned whatever, you're ability to explain yourself diminishes exponentially.

However, I do endorse you're view on one's right to an opinion...qualified by the fact that there are two types of opinion: informed & uninformed.

Finally, I'd say the gr8 Islamic State of Iran maintains about the same level of democracy as the US of A..ever heard of the military industrial complex?

  • Four days and counting....this old Oregonian will dancing in the aisles, lol.....

  • One of my all-time favorites by SD. Superb in every way, instrumentals--yes that Gibson is amazing, absolutely brilliant lyrics and intent--painting alienation & bunker mentality, providing a shoot-it-out fantasy for all those Walter Mitty's out there--hitting 'em below the hair line & perhaps even healing some. All done in a rockin', oddly soulful tune with a kick-ass riff...That's musical alchemy that few artists can pull off.

  • LOVE this song! It's my favorite by them!

  • It is super tough to nail somebody elses guitar solo, so dont be to hard on John Herington.

  • @Winterstick549 I think John does a really great Job with the Dan

  • @Winterstick549 WORD, especially when the "somebody" is Larry @%#$%&) Carlton. And Herington is NO slouch, he's really superlative.

  • @Winterstick549 : Herrington makes it HIS OWN.....

  • righteous...

  • STEELY DAN/Don’t Take Me Alive

    流石に、このツアーギタリストも、練り抜かれたラリーのフレーズを真似するしかない…。

  • Jon Herington is awsome!!

  • @beatles1000 which member is that? Never heard of him

  • the sound of that Gibson man.... wooow..can't get enough..

    Raphaela..

  • the sound of that Gibson man.... wooow

  • WHAT a perfect way to discribe a pine crowd. mellow yet substantial. detroit & pine is a favorite for ALL bands b/c they ALL say it when they play there. been going to pine knob since james gang in 74 up to "mayhem festival". 210 Broke my glasses in the mosh pit!!!!!! @ 48 yrs. old/young.

  • Bin Laden, we sure didn't take you alive, you grubby son of a BITCH!!!

  • Steely Dan in Toronto on July 22nd, 2011....i'll be there...

  • Brilliant to rediscover royal scam....still so dark,so tight, after a few decades!i think in many ways better than aja, every song a gem.used to be into genesis, yes, then heard this and have become addicted.........in a laid back mode.smokin.

  • ooh my god..goosepimples and tears.. this is soo beautiful! Raphaela..

  • This was the very first Steely Dan song that got me hooked. Those crazy words..I crossed my old man down in Oregon, don't take me alive. Who cared what that meant!?? Always a hot band and wild lyrics. They were always about on thing...the music. And they just got better and better.

  • that white girl is throwing off the sisters

  • What a great tune.. Along with FM, Deacon Blues, Black Cow, and of course Do it Again. Thank you so much for the musical enjoyment over the years Becker & Fagan..

  • I've loved Steely Dan since I was a kid in the 70's. Genius. how were they able to come up with such ideas? too good!

  • July 3rd, my town Portland. Oregon...show sold out in 15 minutes. Thanks to good friends have a ticket in my pocket. Dream of a lifetime come true. It's going to be a great Holiday!

  • Donald Fagen-Roger Waters. Rock & Roll's genius minds.

  • WOW one of there best although they are all great. Larry Carlton is great and so is John Herrington. The whole band is very impressive to say the least.

  • I was at this concert, just fantastic. Each time I see them, they impress!

  • Love it... That sun-of-a bitch... Jon Herrington..ooooooohhh

  • I do a lot of youtube surfing (WAAAAY too much), and I feel my tastes are about as varied and open-minded as anyone's, but you know.... I seem to always come back to Steely Dan. Simply the best.

  • who plays the guitar in this video? Larry Carlton?

  • @silasoldo7 ................john herrington

  • This has all the pats - it is a materpiece in bringmg emotion to music. And it cannot be done without focus just as it cannot be listemed to without focus. This piece has captured irt all.

  • Very entertaining, despite the psychedelia and the fact that Donald's voice had already been fried some years ago. I like the way the backup singers all do completely arbitrary hand motions.

  • Compare this to your average rap "song".

  • Nice to see bands that aren't afraid to break the sacred '3 minute' long song rule.

    Bunk.

    Good music knows no time.

    Except 4/4, 12/8, 9/6, whatever. :D

  • Wow. Absolute perfection! I get goosebumps every time I watch this. Thanks so much for posting!!

  • Absolutely Best Ever ! ! !

  • Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Loyd Grossman on lead vocals and keytar!

  • does anyone know if this video is available on dvd?

  • the lady on the right in the brown dress outshines all of them

  • @nukulesits carolyn leonhart a great singer in her own right suggest you google her and check out her website.

  • @hartforp Not bad to look at either.

  • Great song to light-up the bong with!

  • I mean realy.. The guitar... Sic...

  • when you think about it,the fact this song came out over 25 years before the Columbine masacre, these lyrics are as acurate and relative to that incident just shows you how far ahead of their time they were. I can't help but feel so fortunate to have grown up in this era that produced the greatest musicians and bands in modern history. They inspired my intrest and dedication to make a career and a life from music and influenced my style of guitar and song writing that is not for sale anywhere..

  • ‎"I hear my inside, the mechanized hum of another world"...the words in this song feel so eerily familiar. They frightfully chase me down to the darkest shadows of my vacant imagination, that it gives me chills!!!

  • Keith Carlock is the man.

  • What music is suppose to be!

  • THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD ALWAYS BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES WHEN MUSIC WAS GOOD, SEX WAS INNOCENT AND THE MERE FACT OF GROWING UP WAS SOMETHING TO EXPLORE.

GOD BLESS ALL THOSE OF THE 70'S AND BEFORE / AND DRUGS WERE GOOD! STEELY DAN WAS SOMEONE YOU COULD RELATE TO !

  • @Woodyup disco sucked herpes was horrible and pot was brown coke cost too much and the quality sucked

    but being young,,,,priceless

  • @Woodyup Too true Woody Too true, great more carefree Days.

  • @Woodyup I wish this sentiment held any reality. I can totally relate to it, but it's actually just romanticized bullshit. Sorry. Steely Dan IS one of the best bands in the world though.

  • @Woodyup Yes you said that right!

  • @Woodyup Yes you said that right!

  • That guy who did the Luby's shooting in 1991 loved this song.....and they didn't take him alive O.O

  • @JeremyLaymanPPD

"Don't Take Me Alive came out in '76 on the Royal Scam album so that long before the "Luby's Shooting. It's not about any particular incident but it sort of close to the Charles Whitman, Texas University Tower Shooting in '66. He killed 14 people including his mother and wife. The pressures of culture change and the Vietnam draft caused a few individuals to "go postal" with random acts of violence, much like the Columbine shootings, That's what makes this song relevant today.

  • Mellow but substantial, you know what I mean ? Gotta love Fagen.

  • class.........................................

  • Great tune, but without Larry Clayton on lead it's a shadow of what it could be.

  • @tseaver341 I think Herrington's lacking too, but in fairness to him Carlton live is no where near the level of his studio playing

  • @tseaver341 Larry Carlton

  • Tasteful Bliss

  • The girl in the middle is Hot..

  • @Patrickphx11 Goodness - from where I'm lookin they are all hot!!

  • @Patrickphx11

Check out some older vids, she "was" way hotter.

  • Comment removed

  • @Patrickphx11 The girl in the middle is Carolyn Leonhart.

  • Wow this rocks

  • No fart jokes!

  • I was at this show and the video really captures the vibe from that night. Awesome.

  • I'm still digging this song after all these years. Thanks for sharing. =)

  • They should not have included shots of the singers, the one in the middle ruined my concentration on the song. Every time she moved I almost fell off the chair.

  • tight playing definitely

just work out further variations of this, fellahs

  • Steely Dans best song...ever, very fun to play guitar along with, makes my Wife crazy, 4 or 5 times in a row, I almost have rhe song nailed...poppa

  • Beautiful, sexy, sultry, love it listened to many in my time and these guys are in my opinion the top of their league,..Play me some more!

  • my boy seen them play at shoreline amphitheater and said they paid for everyones bart tickets home so they could play longer, world class cats

  • A favorite song. Hauntng with such a great intro. And beautiful Carolyn in the middle singing backup.

  • Love the Dan dearly, for decades, but a Keytar is never cool. Sorry, it's just true.

  • steely danalive wew.

  • dude what can be said of music in one word STEELY DAN.

  • Remember this song when I was a teen. Brings back such great memories. This is my favorite band. Gives me goose bumps!!! What great guitar riffffssss!!!!!The laydies are a nice element

  • What great musicians and song writers. This is one of Frgans most powerful pieces

  • it wasn't all about the music, which was incredible. They were militants, who were gone for 15-20 years..you figure it out. they would be arrsted for their lyrics today ...watch history, it will repeat...

  • my favorite group ever i love steely dan im black and when i wear steely dan shirts and thay ask me who is steely dan i feel good because iv introduced another human being to the best group to ever grace a stage

  • I haven't been playing for any years and I'd give my left nut to play a lead that slick.

  • they still rock unbelievable!

  • The action on that guitar looks awesome. Sweet.

  • This wonderful version of this tune and the below are the 2 highest rated comments? Fagen is at his vocal best, the girls blending in perfectly. Herrignton is demonstrating what a consummate professional he is. Horns and keyboards doing some great effects. This is top-grade stuff, baby!

  • @SaxyDan54 Absolutely! The orchestration of brass, keyboards, guitars, percussion and vocals is beyond brilliant.

  • Fagen looks like my college chemistry professor now

  • I been playin for 40 years and I'd give your left nut and my right one to play a lead that slick !!

  • @2manystrats Jon Herrington is killer-but he's mostly quoting Larry Carlton's studio riffs-not an easy task in itself.

  • @pretorious700 YUP...

  • Classic and briiliant. One of the best guitar intros in rock combined with a haunting tale and melody. Just perfect.

  • Do this art form Justus and turn a High School age kid onto this music

  • Donald Fagen...this guys is a legend...whatever to the rest of great music writers these days? It seems to be a very rare find nowadays.

  • What a great band this is man, wow.Thats what I love about youtube, where else you gonna see this stuff unless you can make it to the show

  • that wasnt carlton on the guitar in this song..at least not in this video. carlton played with them in a bunch of songs

  • This is truly timeless music. A top pop melody that never got the accolades it truly deserved. Remarkable brilliance.

  • Great tune!

  • Absolutely amazing!! My favorite Steely Dan song..Donald Fagan is an amazing song writer...And Larry Carlton is one of the best guitar players out there!!

  • donald fagan is truly one of the greatest writers along with frank zappa. i thankfully saw sd in mass a few years ago.

  • Dan best rock song not jazz the need new rock & roll songs

  • Soooooo many reasons to love the DAN~! This hot lead is one of them, so hot he gets lost in the intro...Oh well I know --- it's live...

  • On this song, he just gets older, better, and spookier!

  • The guy just gets better and spookier with age!

  • Great sound. True musicans!

  • I love them! But, I think they are going crazy. Don't get me wrong, I love their music!

  • deft

  • Heard SD for the first time in '74 @ 5 years old. Aside from loosing my hairline, haven't lost my appetite for this exceptional music. Timeless. Omnipotent. Fagan's a lyrical genius bathing in blue waters of harmony.

  • I hope Heaven exists , so i can see them there too ! Its a slight pity Donalds Voice is slightly faultering , wow its proof of just too much use !! in a good sense .

  • remember this!

  • I remember reading an interview with Donald Fagen in the late 70s in which he said "See that guy that hijacked that cross-town bus yesterday?" (They were talking in New York.) "He probably has ten copies of The Royal Scam at home." (^^)

  • @bapyou Brilliant! Thanks for that insight! Fagen's probably right of course.....

  • This song STILL gives me the chills!

  • It doesn't get much better than this!!

  • one of my all-time top 10 favorites......respct from a native Oregonian, lol

  • I always thought Jeff Beck could have done a fine job putting his tasteful lead stamp on one of Dan's classic compositions.

  • @ledboots2009

I would love to hear him do that, especially on this tune, it'd be awesome!

  • @ledboots2009 Mmmm - there's a thought. I have never imagined JB playing with SD. There again, I never imagined Pat Metheny playing with the Dan either, but apparently he was invited to do some live shows with them (but couldn't because of other commitments - he was pissed off, as you would be! :-)

  • just an excellent group, period!

  • Great song.

  • just great. what a band, and such cool lyrics. first band to have got me interested in jazzt chords. re debate below about guitar player...I honestly couldn't have told you who he was....I just think he's great. becker and fagan have consistently chosen great musicians, and have done so again. mspriortube's comment exactly right i think
