I'm not too sure of this and don't know so if someone knows explain it to me but... you have to pay to use Skype on internet to call actual phones, why doesn't Google have to charge for allowing its thing to call phones?
Is it cause they run ads on it? Are they actually paying whomever for their thing on WIFI to call real mobiles phones and just the users, us, don't have to give Google money cause they make it from ads and use that to pay the charges or am I way off?

Would Skype get approved for the iPhone, It would not, because AT&T have a vested interest in revenue made from mobile phones. If everyone installed Google VOIP on their phones there would be NO REVENUE. Remember also that Google are in competition with Apple in the Mobile Phone OS market. So Apple may block it at the behest of AT&T.
Just find out if Skype is available on the iPhone. It's available on other mobile platforms, like Symbian and Windows Mobile
FYI Skype is on the Iphone. But VOIP calls can only be made via WiFi, most likely this was done at the behest of the nasty AT&T. It's the same with the Iphone here in the UK, again VOIP on WiFi only.

There is a lot of good free software for windows. For example winff is great for converting movies and music, and I do like windows live messenger and windows live mail. However there is very good proprietary software on both windows and os x. Sometimes you do pay for what you get.

Excuse me? VoIP uses one's 3G network to make calls. Last time I checked, the iPhone requires a data plan to use. I'm PAYING AT&T for the privilege of using their 3G internet service. Like HELL I'll let them tell me that I can't use Google Voice or Skype, because it competes with their regular phone plan. It's selective filtering of their internet service.

The iPhone is an embedded computer. It should be an open platform. Even if not through the App Store, one should be able to simply drag and drop a third party app onto their phone without jailbreaking.

You know there's a large group of paranoid programmers out there some where constantly monitoring the data being uploaded from their Google apps, and if they had found anything bad at all they would have been in an uproar by now. Network Neutrality is a serious issue that shit companies like AT&T AND Google are trying to take away. Net neutrality is the principle that the internet is free, user-based, not run and monitored and regulated by corporations. Under full network neutrality, technically there would be no copyrights on anything on the internet. This would be impossible, but essentially at least we shouldn't be controlled so much by ISPs and major internet companies.

I trust independent govt agencies more than federal agencies. But govt should only have limited powers when it comes to the private sector.
I however believe the internet should not be taxed, limited, or blocked. FCC was setup to prevent/rmonitor/regulate companies and their products, things like AT&T back in the 80s when it was pretty much the ONLY telephone company in the states.

Constitutional law doesn't apply to private entities. The FCC isn't run by politicians, and if the government just left it up to private industry to regulate itself, there'd be no agency around to enforce any of those regulations.

There is a lot of good free software for windows. For example winff is great for converting movies and music, and I do like windows live messenger and windows live mail. However there is very good proprietary software on both windows and os x. Sometimes you do pay for what you get.

i read that calling one google voice number would make all telephones of that contact to ring at the same time, including telephones in places like rural zones, where the cost of the call to be redirected is too high, and telephone companies where complaining about that

Net neutrality isn't bullshit, dude. If you're against net neutrality you're against true freedom of the internet as a medium. Giving the FCC the ability to regulate has been considered a requirement for any medium. Look at radio and television, FCC sets standards that everyone has to follow and this is good.
FCC regulation on all broadband providers is a good thing and will allow you to use your precious iphone more.
Also, you're bitching about a free service. Shut up.

If google wants to have their app on AT&T network and AT&T don't want it .. too bad, that's over and done not a chance they will... what google can do is build their own mobile phone network then give away free calls.. see how long they last with the cost of equipment and electricity etc bills... then google will know they can't replace AT&T's network it would mean bankrupsy. Excuse me? VoIP uses one's 3G network to make calls. Last time I checked, the iPhone requires a data plan to use. I'm PAYING AT&T for the privilege of using their 3G internet service. Like HELL I'll let them tell me that I can't use Google Voice or Skype, because it competes with their regular phone plan. It's selective filtering of their internet service.
But hey, if you want to live in China where everything is filtered and censored, that's great for you!

You dont understand the full problem your being a little narcistic only thinking about how things will benefit yourself and why shouldnt you have what you want.. theres two reason. A network cant run without money to pay for running it, and currently 3G would struggle to cope with voip apps.. android has already caused some major signaling problems on the networks. LTE is coming out next year, Android should build an app on these systems..

not really. the difference is your not just using bandwidth 2 make the call you need skype credit. were google voice you get a new phone number you can call using it over the internet, without paying. therefore if everyone could do it, well at&t will lose money from calling plans. cuz what would you chose. free calling or paid calling?

i think if apple doesn't want an app to be sold in their app store, thats their decision. its there store. end of story. google needs to stick with what they can do, search engine. thats it. stop trying to go further than that. you're not known as a technology (hardware) company and your gonna have to spend millions to advertise that way.

Yes, but the App Store is the ONLY way to get an App onto the phone without jailbreaking. An iPhone, like most mobile devices, is an embedded computer. The fact that it has the ability to run apps, and isn't an open platform, is somewhat of a joke. What if every app for OS X had to go through a Mac App Store? It'd be pretty ridiculous, no?

The only way to get an application for the iPhone is to go through the App Store, correct? My question is, if it were the same for OS X, or another OS, and all applications came from one centralized store, and you HAD to have your app approved there, you'd find it slightly ridiculous no?
The iPhone is an embedded computer. It should be an open platform. Even if not through the App Store, one should be able to simply drag and drop a third party app onto their phone without jailbreaking.

i now understand. but you have to understand, blackberry and other phones do the same thing. i think its just because the app store is on such a greater scale that its different. personally i don't see why you need to jailbreak your phone, first off, if you can't find the app you want in 75k apps, then its probably not a good app, or its illegal. but you have to remember, the iphone is a phone. and i think apple wants you to think of it as a phone, not a computer. example: no multitasking

Because reading emails is a definite no-no and a company could get into HUGE trouble for it...not only that, its actually not easy to do - at least not easy on a large scale.
Now if they were reading emails on suspect accounts that had to do with home land security (ie as per FBI or some government agency) then its totally acceptable.

Yeah, I love all these conspiracy theories. As soon as people see "send Google program information for research" they flip out. You know there's a large group of paranoid programmers out there some where constantly monitoring the data being uploaded from their Google apps, and if they had found anything bad at all they would have been in an uproar by now. People are just waiting for a conspiracy concerning Google, but the fact is, none has been found yet.

I also think if it is good for one company it should be just as good for another...it seems like people got leary about MS when they realized that Windows was such a dominating OS and wanted to immediatly slap sanctions on them for it, now we live in an age where this happens all the time so we have grown used to it and tolerate it..if Google had been as big as it is now back then I promise you they would have been slapped.

Network Neutrality is a serious issue that shit companies like AT&T AND Google are trying to take away. Net neutrality is the principle that the internet is free, user-based, not run and monitored and regulated by corporations. Under full network neutrality, technically there would be no copyrights on anything on the internet. This would be impossible, but essentially at least we shouldn't be controlled so much by ISPs and major internet companies.
