most likely quite a few of the people in power only maintain the illusion of having religious beliefs because atheists for the most part aren't going to make a big deal out of it while those of a faith tend to fuss a lot.

Perhaps not 'everyone' who can design weapons, after all islamic nations dont just make guns, they make great guns (rather annoyingly) and there was the 'bible reference' gun-scope's fiasco recently. But yeah, developing new technologies and strategys is the athiests.

Being happy to take advantage of poorer people by paying them pittence to mine iron, forge steel and produce munitions ...thats the theists end of the bargain.

No they don't; at most they produce inferior clones of AKs and a few obsolete Heckler & Kochs. No islamic nation produces anything worth having that's more technologically advanced than a carpet. Without Russian, US and European weapons they'd still be killing each other with spears.

The Merkava is an OK tank (not Abrams/Challie 2/Leopard 2/T-90 class, but OK) but it's not exactly built in an islamic nation: it's Israeli. The main gun and engine are German designs, the composite armour is British, the fire control system is American and the machineguns are Belgian. Israel is the only Middle Eastern nation capable of building its own tank designs (The Iranian Zulfiqar is a joke) and even then they'd be fucked without western technology.
