  • Hi conkyjoe, its not right, that this song is written only from Eric Burdon, but thamks a lot for posting the Video, i've only seen the sequence in the Festival-Film, its one of my favorite (pop) songs ever.

"Monterey" is a 1967 song by Eric Burdon & The Animals, with music and lyrics by the group's members, Eric Burdon, John Weider, Vic Briggs, Danny McCulloch, and Barry Jenkins. In 1968, two different video clips of the song were aired. (wikipedia)

  • "You wanna find the truth in life; don't pass music by...

And you know I would not lie..."

  • @mungirl - yes 100% - A time when people were smart enough not to simply believe anything a man in a suit with a hair helmet told them.

  • Monterey is one of the most historic Spanish/Mexican cities in California. Original adobes are found on many street corners. Some are open for tours while others house contemporary businesses. Visitors can wander through Monterey's rich past, from California's first theatre to Colton Hall, where the state's original constitution was written. Hope you can visit this beautiful city and remember Eric's great song, Monterey, yeah...

  • @Montery12 My late and still-Heavenly-precious wife was from Santa Rosa, CA. I'm trapped in Ohio as of now. I'm definitely coming back to NorCal someday soon. My friends were at Monterey in June 1967. It was THE memory of a lifetime.

  • Great Music here I say TTT approved

  • a los que no les gusto han de ser unos mugrosos reguetoñeros

  • . . . if you wanna know the truth in life . . . don't pass music by!!!

I DO BELIEVE, That Our Greatest Achievement Ever ....

    WAS MUSIC!!!

  • @akaTheQ97

Thats the problem with todays world..

The music died abot 25 yearrs ago

  • Awesome. Missed that festival because I got drafted. Keep up the good work.

  • #Awful...

  • To Stan and Jim: thank you for the memories and the photos of Jimi, Grace, Brian, and Janis. Thank you for the motorcycle ride to the event. Thank you for being there in June 1967.

  • Ah, Monterey! Eric Burdon and company caught the light, the color, and the fire with this tune!

  • Did u know?...Jimi Hendrix opened for The Monkees on their tour and was booed offstage.

  • My God, he is SO YOUNG here! Incredible. That Sitar - raga rock. What a time. Burdon really captured it in this piece. "You wanna find the truth in life? Don't pass music by." What a line. "Even the cops grooved with us." That was sure before it all fell apart.

  • I was so young, but I remember those days like if it were a dream, a beautiful dream.... Thanks Eric.

  • In 1967 I did not know Monterey from Manta Ray but I sure loved Eric Burdon's music. Thanks for this trip down memory lane!, conky!!

  • Thinking about those days. How much has changed. It was a special time. Never will be repeated.

  • please god take me back to the innocent times

    b4 terrorism

    alqada

    hate

when we used to say hello to everyone

when mankind loved to be alive

    down in Monterey

  • @munggirl I'm sorry there were no innocent times, just innocent people, Kennedy was assassinated, Martin Luther KING, Bobby, war was going on...and white people wouldn't even share a freakin' water fountain.

  • @munggirl You got that right!!!

  • @munggirl Ok, I wasn't even alive in the 60s and I know it wasn't all that innocent. Race riots? Vietnam? Even the peace- and freedom-loving hippies weren't immune - Good ol' Charlie Manson made sure of /that/.

Would still love to go back, though. I'm just not kidding myself about anything.

  • @munggirl Terrorism, hate and all that existed well before 9/11, the media just wants you scared and apparently it worked. There is still love, don't despair.

  • I was there.... I think ?

  • Take note "Prince Jones" was none other than Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones.

  • why the fuck is Nguli34689 talking about fire crackers.

  • man he was young, sweet sounds,

  • I like the song and videos bring back memories.

  • they and jimi played thier first american shows here though. its hard to believe when im walking around the fairgrounds that over 40 years ago all these legends were standing where i am.

  • The Who was already a well known band... their debut was some years before

  • @bluesygo

It was the American debut of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and one of the first American shows of The Who. The Who were phenomenal and well known in Britain, but were exposed to Americans at this concert. The Experience were just starting out. There was actually rivalry between the two on who would play first because they both planned on destroying instruments. The Who played first after losing a coin toss.

  • ERIC FOREVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!

  • I was about 13 that year and banged a nice lady who was there about 19 years later

  • @flyinv1967 Hilarious!

  • The bass kicks ass!!!!! Erick - one of the greatest voices in RnR.

  • Brian Jones was there amongst the crowd of people groovin' on Bear's medicine.

I suspect that the lyrics: "His Majesty, Prince Jones, smile at me...." was the reference to Brian Jones. I remember this event. I went to TJ and brought back some firecrackers (Warrior Brand; Camel Brand: Phoenix Brand; Black Cat Brand; Anchor Brand. Most of them were from Po-Sing Fireworks Factory in Macau, China...The best firecrackers I've had were BLACK JACK PIRATE Brand. Sounded like small cherry bombs)!!

  • Happy birthday Eric

  • The greatest song ever to commemorate an event! This song has passion, insight and great music!

  • Mr. Eric Burdon... powerful voice....

  • Wow memories flood into my mind, as I go through my daily grind

bringing back to me, the earlier days, when my spirit soared free...in a moment of escaped time, between the seconds on the wall.. bring me back to monterey

  • wow man this song is so good and the lyrics too

  • This guy is a legend! One of the great, GREAT voices and I could listen to as I die. Thanks Eric!!!!

  • Even the cops grooved with us.

    Do you believe me, yeah?

That just goes to show how cool the Animals are!

  • it needs more cowbell

  • This is about Eric & The Animals. Not the other performers. A great song, exemplifying a fabulous event. Eric was way ahead of his time.

  • Great Video.

  • Brian Jones was at the show,, where is the complete Eric Burdon & Animals show from Monterey? does it exist without the side stuff?

  • This man had one of the best voices to come out of the 60s. What a talent was/is Eric Burdon.

And he could sing more than just the blues. How many can do that!? A legend.

  • Wow-a VERY rare Clip..never saw this ever!!

  • i was born n '48..ok brian was epaleptic rite, when was it when you herd of someone who suffered from this going swimming @ 2-3 am who murdered brian jones of the band called brian jones rollin stonz, or why did the music played after his death sound the same, when he led it albums were diff every one!! why now after do all stones songs sound 1 or 2 notes different,no longer new sounds always it's all only R$R,could that be the answer?? ask mic

  • super

  • The Goose Lake International Music Festival in 1970 was the least reported and the most fun of any rock festival including Woodstock. No rain. Plenty of Ripple and other assorted mind benders. 3 days of great music, no hassles. Jethro Tull's closing was a religious experience - the circular stage where they entered with "To Cry You A Song".... I can still hear it today.

  • monterey was a charity do while woodstock was profit motivated besides monterey festival was far superiot

  • Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane said analogously in an interview: Forget Woodstock. Monterey was the real deal

  • This cooks.

  • He looks like the one guy who gave them cocaine in Easy Rider in the beginning !(?)

  • Brian Jones was at Monterey,he introduced Jimi Hendrix to the crowd

  • "You wanna find the truth in life, don't let music pass you by."

    Genius and Truth.

  • there is something about him thats attractive, i saw him play live in the sixties

  • there is something about him thats attractive

  • For all i heard and saw on tape from Monterey ...it was pretty much a perfect festival .... no problems with security, no reports of bad drugs, awesome crowd and of course Jimi Hendrix Experience delivering it flawlessly. Wish i was there more than i wish i was in Woodstock.

  • you just dont hear bass like that anymore, great vid ,faved, mega song.

  • One of the greatest vocalists of our time.

  • @Subhuman80 AMEN !

  • @Subhuman80

    Back then when some of us were growing up there was;

    Terrorism

Not Al Qaeda but a whole lot more than just this one.

    Hate

Many of us still say hello to everyone

Mankind still loves to be alive. It is that so many just do not accept it.

The world is full of people whose notion of a satisfactory future is in fact, a return to the idealized past.

It is all about what is in your heart and how it beats to the answers you seek.

  • "His Majesty Prince Jones smiled as he moved among the crowd."

That's such an accurate way to describe Brian.

    <3

  • very bad sound in this video

  • @AngelsMarquiise You're such an ass. "Very bad sound in this video." Geeeeeez, this audio format isn't exactly you're home stero system stupid.

  • It was a seminal event but everyone wore raincoats for protection .. Beautiful song one of the best every. Even the cops grooved with up.. Do you believe me? Hug Masakela music was black as night. You want to find the truth in life? Don't pass music by and you know I would not lie ........down in Monterey.

  • One of the best bass riffs in rock.

  • Brilliant.

  • Hey Highroadnow check this out. My older bros took me everywhere with them. I was 8 @ the time. They loaded up the car with 3 other friends headed for Monterrey and me in the car from LA. Left a note for my mom they took me to Monterrey. On the way down the street my mom saw me and said no. I can't go. I was pissed. I missed all this. Same as you. Would I have let my kid go? No. ha Is Eric the man..yeah! The dude can sing! Meet him many times years later.

  • even the cops grooved with us...do you believe me, yeah? Not anymore today.

  • Litltle Known FACT . . . the Organizers had hired the

    HELL'S ANGELS for security . . ,

WELL . . . kinda got outta hand when 1 of the Angels

    stabbed a guy to death!!!

  • @TheQ97 That was Altamont! Not Monterey. 2 years later.

  • @TheQ97 The hells angels guard all festivals it's a sad fact

  • Jimi Hendrix made me believe we set the world on fire....

  • man, I just remembered I had a chance to go to this festival, and my mom wouldn't let me

    dammit

    I never forgave her....................

  • Monterey was the first time Eric Burdon played with the new Animals lineup. Check out his interview on Songfacts.

  • there will never be music like this again...sadly

  • This is as good as it gets, for a Boomer. People with problems, all the best. Those of us who grew up with good Karma like Eric Burden - Well, we were fortunate.

  • Well, this is about as good as it gets. I remember it well, but this was just exceptional. Down in Monterey.

  • WE NEED PEACE AND LOVE NOW

  • @AL2000FL How about i kill you

  • i was there in 1967 meet jimmi , and it was sooooooooooo cool!!!! i lived in san jose california went to andrew p hill high school/leonard gedenberg

  • @boogerbutt52 I was just a young kid in Los Gatos but grew up with all of it. Oh but to be young agin.

  • In the 1960s, Eric Burdon was known for singing lyrics that conveyed societal issues. I grew up in the 60s and his music empowered me to move forward and not give up in life…At a time when I was powerless, vulnerable, had no money and no real advise from a positive fatherly-figure…Eric through his wonderful music showed me that I can be anything and do anything I wanted…Today I am successful in life…Thanks Eric, mom and a special school teacher who believed in me…

  • Eric Still does things for our Vets today...never looks for credit

  • @zqzqpj

That is because Eric would like us to listen and stop thinking about war and money...

  • Jimi Hendrix, believe me, set the world on fire.

  • OOPS!!! I mean 5-11-2010!!!!

  • Happy Birthday Eric!!!! 4-11-2010

  • A true classic,Forever Young !

  • I love you Eric..<3<3<3

  • Is this song based on minor pentatonic scale?

  • I can tell te lead guitar is based around the pentatonic scale in A Isn't it?

  • gotta love it

  • wrong wrong wrong! chris jones was an actor.

  • I've never heard this song, I've love Eric...thanks for posting. I enjoyed it :)

  • I was 2 years old when this monumental event happened. As the 60's moved into the early 70's, it seemed that the clothes (in my perspective) and the attitudes still lived (in my 7 year old perspective). My Lord, I wore paisley and pin-striped/plaid pants to grade school! I knew dudes as cool as the people shown in this video. They were friends of my older brothers and sisters. It really was an attitude as a way of life. Eric Burdon captured a time that is lost forever.

  • Eric Burdon captured "Monterey" with this song. I love this song. I was a kid when it hit, but it does reflect those days that are long gone now.

  • An All Time Classic Rock'n'roll On Acid. I love that sound! Great lp! "The Twain Shall Meet" from '68. As new and fresh as 42 yrs ago. Super! :oD

  • who is 'His magisty Prince Jones'? Sorry ,wasnt at Montery, but sure am interested in the bands that played there

  • That would be His Majesty Prince Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones.

  • @conkyjoe the greatest musician of all time

  • @conkyjoe right, he used to dress up like a prince i guess that's the reason.

  • @krstnlhjt Prince Jones is probably a reference to Brian Jones, at that time, of the Rolling Stones. The Stones didn't perform, but Brian was there and introduced Jimi Hendrix. Brian Jones died quite young, and his death is shrouded in mystery - many believe his drowning was not an accident.

  • @krstnlhjt brian jones from the rolling stones

  • Comment removed

  • The Who did not "debut" at Monterey

  • @johnptretbar sorry bubby, but the music world DID......NUF SAID......

  • Where's my Psychedelic Lollipop? <3

  • A clip of "His Majesty, Prince Jones" would have been good here...

  • Yes!

  • As far as the Animals went, they were an average band with a fantastic lead singer. My son is named after Eric.

  • Whats his name?

  • love this song man had it stuck in my head all day

  • Me, too.

  • @JDub33095 i like it a lot too. im 17. dont worry brother. my generation still has a fighting chance. thank God im not brainwashed. my dad made sure of that when i was a very young child. i must of been five when i saw hendrix burn his guitar in monterey. i saw morrison do the ed sullivan show. after seeing shows like that, you dont forget it. long live true rock and roll. hail hail rock n roll- chuck berry

It is interesting whether Zamachowski will look like Burdon when at his age.

  • To me, Eric is not conventionally handsome, but he is hot, hot, hot!

  • Monterey is really nice. I spent some of my childhood there. My paternal grandmother lived in Carmel.

  • I wish that I would have attended the 3 day marathon but I was only 10 years old then. I still would have gone if I would have had the chance. I started loving most of these groups when I was very young. I have loved great rock for most of my life.

  • majestuoso, impresionante. Mil gracias por el video!

  • How excellent and cool.

  • lo máximo

  • Satan headbangs To Eric Burdon!!!!

  • ENDLESS THANK YOU'S

  • Seems like yesterday. Elder Tom

  • Some of the artists who came to Monterey, took part in Woodstock too.Janis,Who,Hendrix,Country Joe..Am i missing any other?

  • The Animals, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Gateful Dead, Buffallo Springfield, The Mamas and The Papas, Otis Redding, Ravi Shankar, etc

  • i dont think the mamas and papas were at woodstock.

  • Yes,i think that you're right as for The Jefferson Airplane,Grateful Dead, and Ravi Shankar, they played in both. But as far as i know,no as for The Animals,Byrds,Buffalo Springfield(although some of them played at Woodstock as Crosby,Stills Nash and Young),Mamas & Papas, and Otis Redding (who was alredy dead by then).Perhaps i'm wrong, but this is what i think.Thank you anyway.

  • @elyeye66 Brother Otis debuted "sitting on the dock of the bay" at Monterey

  • Yes,of course,in fact in the film of the concert, you see him singing two songs.I was just saying that he could no perform at Woodstock since he was dead by then.

  • elyeye66 regardless, its still holyground as far as im concerned.

  • @elyeye66 YEAH, A LOT OF FOLKS , BUT THEY WERE TOTALLY UNKNOWN THEN....

  • God I miss the Fairgrounds. I'm glad i'm visiting back home for Christmas

  • gosh, he was so fine

    And the music too

please bring back the blues/jazz/rock 'n roll from the '60s, '70s!

  • @ApplejuicyA ok

  • @shordyinabox just ok ???

  • @stevie0523 yeah its that simple, people want it it will happen

  • @shordyinabox i see...

  • @shordyinabox i hope it does, ans soon too....

  • @ApplejuicyA thats the peoples job

  • "YOU WANT TO FIND THE TRUTH IN LIFE DON'T PASS MUSIC BY" sounds pretty simple to me. Live it love feel it thanks for the memories of a time gone by love Eric and all groups of that time.

  • what a voice....this cat+

  • Thanks YouTube, I now understand this, a song I've heard about a billion times since it came out. What a fantastic homage to all of the great bands at Monterrey Pop Festival. It's truly a sonic snapshot of the 60s and a salute to great rock music. Also, its incredibly complex musically - not in the droning, driving bass, but in the "performer imitations" of Hendrix, Who, etc. I can't imagine how difficult this would be to pull off live. The bass and the vocals keep the tension up - GREAT song!

  • @philipatoz great observations - incredible song too - thanks

  • @philipatoz man, u just hit the nail right smack on the head....i can't imagine how great it would be to hear this live....
