Hi conkyjoe, its not right, that this song is written only from Eric Burdon, but thamks a lot for posting the Video, i've only seen the sequence in the Festival-Film, its one of my favorite (pop) songs ever.
"Monterey" is a 1967 song by Eric Burdon & The Animals, with music and lyrics by the group's members, Eric Burdon, John Weider, Vic Briggs, Danny McCulloch, and Barry Jenkins. In 1968, two different video clips of the song were aired. (wikipedia)
Monterey is one of the most historic Spanish/Mexican cities in California. Original adobes are found on many street corners. Some are open for tours while others house contemporary businesses. Visitors can wander through Monterey's rich past, from California's first theatre to Colton Hall, where the state's original constitution was written. Hope you can visit this beautiful city and remember Eric's great song, Monterey, yeah...
@Montery12 My late and still-Heavenly-precious wife was from Santa Rosa, CA. I'm trapped in Ohio as of now. I'm definitely coming back to NorCal someday soon. My friends were at Monterey in June 1967. It was THE memory of a lifetime.
To Stan and Jim: thank you for the memories and the photos of Jimi, Grace, Brian, and Janis. Thank you for the motorcycle ride to the event. Thank you for being there in June 1967.
My God, he is SO YOUNG here! Incredible. That Sitar - raga rock. What a time. Burdon really captured it in this piece. "You wanna find the truth in life? Don't pass music by." What a line. "Even the cops grooved with us." That was sure before it all fell apart.
@munggirl I'm sorry there were no innocent times, just innocent people, Kennedy was assassinated, Martin Luther KING, Bobby, war was going on...and white people wouldn't even share a freakin' water fountain.
@munggirl Ok, I wasn't even alive in the 60s and I know it wasn't all that innocent. Race riots? Vietnam? Even the peace- and freedom-loving hippies weren't immune - Good ol' Charlie Manson made sure of /that/.
Would still love to go back, though. I'm just not kidding myself about anything.
@munggirl Terrorism, hate and all that existed well before 9/11, the media just wants you scared and apparently it worked. There is still love, don't despair.
they and jimi played thier first american shows here though. its hard to believe when im walking around the fairgrounds that over 40 years ago all these legends were standing where i am.
It was the American debut of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and one of the first American shows of The Who. The Who were phenomenal and well known in Britain, but were exposed to Americans at this concert. The Experience were just starting out. There was actually rivalry between the two on who would play first because they both planned on destroying instruments. The Who played first after losing a coin toss.
Brian Jones was there amongst the crowd of people groovin' on Bear's medicine.
I suspect that the lyrics: "His Majesty, Prince Jones, smile at me...." was the reference to Brian Jones. I remember this event. I went to TJ and brought back some firecrackers (Warrior Brand; Camel Brand: Phoenix Brand; Black Cat Brand; Anchor Brand. Most of them were from Po-Sing Fireworks Factory in Macau, China...The best firecrackers I've had were BLACK JACK PIRATE Brand. Sounded like small cherry bombs)!!
Wow memories flood into my mind, as I go through my daily grind

The Goose Lake International Music Festival in 1970 was the least reported and the most fun of any rock festival including Woodstock. No rain. Plenty of Ripple and other assorted mind benders. 3 days of great music, no hassles. Jethro Tull's closing was a religious experience - the circular stage where they entered with "To Cry You A Song".... I can still hear it today.
For all i heard and saw on tape from Monterey ...it was pretty much a perfect festival .... no problems with security, no reports of bad drugs, awesome crowd and of course Jimi Hendrix Experience delivering it flawlessly. Wish i was there more than i wish i was in Woodstock.
It was a seminal event but everyone wore raincoats for protection .. Beautiful song one of the best every. Even the cops grooved with up.. Do you believe me? Hug Masakela music was black as night. You want to find the truth in life? Don't pass music by and you know I would not lie ........down in Monterey.

Hey Highroadnow check this out. My older bros took me everywhere with them. I was 8 @ the time. They loaded up the car with 3 other friends headed for Monterrey and me in the car from LA. Left a note for my mom they took me to Monterrey. On the way down the street my mom saw me and said no. I can't go. I was pissed. I missed all this. Same as you. Would I have let my kid go? No. ha Is Eric the man..yeah! The dude can sing! Meet him many times years later.
i just know this is one of the BEST....the sad thing is, where i lived, i didn't even KNOW about woodstock....but i remember lying on my living room carpet crankin this...i was a junior in hs...good times....good times...
This is as good as it gets, for a Boomer. People with problems, all the best. Those of us who grew up with good Karma like Eric Burden - Well, we were fortunate.
In the 1960s, Eric Burdon was known for singing lyrics that conveyed societal issues. I grew up in the 60s and his music empowered me to move forward and not give up in life…At a time when I was powerless, vulnerable, had no money and no real advise from a positive fatherly-figure…Eric through his wonderful music showed me that I can be anything and do anything I wanted…Today I am successful in life…Thanks Eric, mom and a special school teacher who believed in me…
I was 2 years old when this monumental event happened. As the 60's moved into the early 70's, it seemed that the clothes (in my perspective) and the attitudes still lived (in my 7 year old perspective). My Lord, I wore paisley and pin-striped/plaid pants to grade school! I knew dudes as cool as the people shown in this video. They were friends of my older brothers and sisters. @JDub33095 i like it a lot too. im 17. dont worry brother. my generation still has a fighting chance. thank God im not brainwashed. my dad made sure of that when i was a very young child. i must of been five when i saw hendrix burn his guitar in monterey. i saw morrison do the ed sullivan show. after seeing shows like that, you dont forget it. long live true rock and roll. hail hail rock n roll- chuck berry
magique ce titre en hommage au festival de MONTEREY; j'adore ,quels souvenirs merveilleux !! un des meilleurs groupes populaire anglo saxon sixties avec le spencer davis group !! very gooddddddd !!!!
I wish that I would have attended the 3 day marathon but I was only 10 years old then. I still would have gone if I would have had the chance. I started loving most of these groups when I was very young. I have loved great rock for most of my life.
Yes,i think that you're right as for The Jefferson Airplane,Grateful Dead, and Ravi Shankar, they played in both. But as far as i know,no as for The Animals,Byrds,Buffalo Springfield(although some of them played at Woodstock as Crosby,Stills Nash and Young),Mamas & Papas, and Otis Redding (who was alredy dead by then).Perhaps i'm wrong, but this is what i think.Thank you anyway.
Yes,of course,in fact in the film of the concert, you see him singing two songs.I was just saying that he could no perform at Woodstock since he was dead by then.
@ApplejuicyA I have heard about that concert, but I wonder if it can still be tracked down as to exactly where it was in Monterey? I mean, has the festival grounds been re-done, or are the original buildings still there?
"YOU WANT TO FIND THE TRUTH IN LIFE DON'T PASS MUSIC BY" sounds pretty simple to me. Live it love feel it thanks for the memories of a time gone by love Eric and all groups of that time.
Thanks YouTube, I now understand this, a song I've heard about a billion times since it came out. What a fantastic homage to all of the great bands at Monterrey Pop Festival. It's truly a sonic snapshot of the 60s and a salute to great rock music. Also, its incredibly complex musically - not in the droning, driving bass, but in the "performer imitations" of Hendrix, Who, etc. I can't imagine how difficult this would be to pull off live. The bass and the vocals keep the tension up - GREAT song!

Burdon jest podobny do Zamachowskiego. It is interesting whether Zamachowski will look like Burdon when at his age.

To me, Eric is not conventionally handsome, but he is hot, hot, hot!

Monterey is really nice. I spent some of my childhood there. My paternal grandmother lived in Carmel.

Thanks YouTube, I now understand this, a song I've heard about a billion times since it came out. What a fantastic homage to all of the great bands at Monterrey Pop Festival. It's truly a sonic snapshot of the 60s and a salute to great rock music. Also, its incredibly complex musically - not in the droning, driving bass, but in the "performer imitations" of Hendrix, Who, etc. I can't imagine how difficult this would be to pull off live. The bass and the vocals keep the tension up - GREAT song!
