The 51st Highland Division was part of-in fact one of the best parts of our army-that is the British Army-every soldier knew that, and was proud of it.They were not separate-they were and are a proud, integral part of it.Anybody who says otherwise doesn't know the army or its traditions.

Yes he was indeed commander of XXX Corps , but the 51st Highland Division was part of XXX Corps-thus Lt-General Horrocks was the General Officer taking the salute.

Sorry mycoranger-yes they are Scottish, but they are in the British army.They aren't mutually exclusive-quite the opposite.Whereas they had the some of the finest regiments, British Army is what they were.

Agree mate. I'm Scottish but have English, Welsh & Irish ancestry. I call myself Scots AND British. My only gripe is, as hibees says, those people who call anything British - English. Americans being by far the worst at understanding the difference.
My daughter's English and I've told her to be proud of where she comes from - except when Scotland play England at football - she once turned up at my house full of Scotland supporters wearing an England top!! :-)

@Legitimatemuffins Actually it may be at least partly down to our own martial spirit but in the two world wars Scottish casualties were proportionately so way in excess of what they should have been that they certainly weren't used exactly the same as the troops from the rest of the UK. They were more likely to be in the front line.

@hibeesrules I agree that most people in the USA are ignorant of the cultural diversity in Great Britain. Personally I am a native Californian and I find it a headache myself to try and explain the difference between Welch, English, Cornish, Scottish, and Irish. There are many dipshits in the US but similar cultural ignorance is found throughout Europe.Can you tell the difference between a NorCal Bay Area Asshole and a SoCal Inconsiderate Duche?

At one time 1-4 human beings on earth fell under British rule. It wasn't in the cards to last forever. I'm Afro-Caribbean born in England living in the states. my grandad was part of that division. he was captured by the germans early on, but escaped. he may have been in that parade. 51st highland division, a legendary scottish regiment. love the first song Atholl and Breadalbane Gathering
