Thanks so much for this video! I'm an Aspie too. Tonight I am having a bit of a meltdown because I feel like everywhere I go, people do things that over-stimulate me to the point where I want to scream and tear my hair out. It's really depressing to think that I might have to give up doing the things I love because people don't understand my sensory issues. It's so comforting to know that I'm not alone and that I'm not "weird".
Hey. I just wanted to thank you for posting this. I have SID, mainly with touch and taste. I'm 19 now and was just diagnosed this year. My whole life I've been having extreme meltdowns because of clothing and food and I thought I was just weird. I was always bullied about how I dressed because I had to wear soft clothing with the fewest seams possible, which isn't really fashionable. It's nice to know that there are more people who feel the same way I do.
I'm just wondering if any or all children with Aspergers experience reading and writing issues. Perhaps to the point where they panic when it comes to writing a story?
Thanks for this video. It really helps those of us who have Aspergers and who know someone with Aspergers. I would like to know how you cope with these SID's? Can you talk to yourself prior to an event, and tell yourself that this is what will happen, this is what I will feel, and this is how I will react? What type of "help" or assistance are you getting? from psychologists, doctors, family, school?
im a aspie and have sid.. my senses are really high.. most the time when i touch things i get almost overwhelmed how they feel or taste... i can barely eat even the mildest of spicy things cause it burns my mouth so much i often physically spasm from overloading...
Hi, my brother has aspergers syndrome and he is so much like you i feel like you are him just alot grown up. I love him so much but i can see he cant communicate properly with me i dont know why, since i am also slightly different like that, yet not as aparent. anyway, please can you maybe think about doing a video on how you prefer to be spoken to and so on maybe if thats possible... it would have a great impact on my life.
Thank you sweetie! My son Brandon is very much like you,, I love him sooooo much. He is 7, someday I would like to show him your videos. It would be great for him to really know he isn't alone. Thank you for your videos.
Question? Do you take any medications? (you don't have to answer if you don't want to)
@tlvailco You may want to show him the earlier videos as the more recent ones my Tourette's is very apparent. It has 'exploded' into a severe case. As of right now I only take celexa and some vitamins. I was on everything.. It wasn't good!
Hi jaydy, I just found these we are grateful for them. I'm getting prepared to bring a young adult with Aspergers into my home and I'm not sure what to expect, having your blog is wonderful.Hopefully we can try to understand he may have some of these feelings too. He hasn't moved in yet but i do know he spends a ton of time on the computer for his down time. I wonder if he would want to do something like this too. Anyway, THANK YOU for enlightening us on this confusing disease. :)
I have Sensory Integration Disorder too! It always seems like people dont understand how bad it is my main thing is touch I hate people touching me i feel like billions of tiny pple jumping on my skin this causes me to shut down and cry i had to be homeschooled because of this I have a Question: i get told all the time that i rock back and forth i noticed that you do it to; does this have to do with SID or is it just a coincedence? i would real appreciate the answer thanks!
Hi demonmecha , it it could be that only 1 thing can set it off... I've seen someone eat hot tamales, and hot peppers (raw or cooked) but not be able to eat food that has black pepper on it - because it's toooooo hot. Each individual is very different. For example, I know a young boy who can't stand the sound of scratching plastic like when you scrape a waterbottle with your fingernail, but doesn't react to plastic shopping bags, or playing together with plastic toys. Hope this helps.
This is the second video of yours that I have watched today. You are truly wonderful for posting these video blogs to help others see what you are experiencing. My eight year old son has recently been diagnosed with Asperger's, SID, and ADHD. You have given me an idea of what my son goes through with your videos. Thank you so very much.
Thank you sooooo much for all of your WONDERFUL emails. I have a boy with Aspergers and SID. He has been in therapy OT, Speech, ABA Social etc since he was 6. I always wanted to hear from an older person who can explain better what he is going through. This means the world to me. Thank you.
I have sensory integration disfunction, but not as bad as you have it. I'm not ausistic in anyway, but when growing up is was extremely sensitive to touch and sound. i wouls have major panic attacks at school, esspecially during fire drills. and everything that touched me felt like it hurt. I went to occupational therapy to fix my sensativity to touch but sound is still an issue. I don't see or hear anything about this dysfunction usually so its nice to know I'm not alone.
Thank you for sharing. My little girl is diagnosis with SPD. Do you go to OT? Right now my little girl almost 4 years old. She is tactile defensive and sensory seeking. And water actually soothes her and calms her down. But she doesn't like anyone touching her hair or her head ... and getting a haircut or her fingernails cut is uncomfortable for her.
Of course I don't want to say that I know what you feel - obviously I do not. But I just felt like you were reciting my own words.. It was...interesting =] And moving. I just want you to know.
Let me ask you a question... How about music? I've seen your videos with quite loud music being played - by CDplayer and by you:) Doesn't it bother you? Does it affect your hearing in any way? Do you react to music differently than to other sounds? WhichSoundsMakeYouNervous?
I've read a lot about autism and Asperger's syndrome but nothing has helped me understand & imagine these special sensations as clearly as you just did.
I admire you, you are a very strong, brave, sensitive & smart person! :)
I also would like to tell you that your descriptions made me think of some of my own sensations... I write some poetry and the way I describe my feelings in poems is very similar to what you say... I feel it - not on my skin or in my mouth - but somewhere inside of me..
hay whats up i realy in joyed your video from one SID person to another i am glad to know that you made this video so people can understand what we have.
Thank you so much for your videos! I have a friend and I think she may have a mild case of aspergers; it's not diagnosed, but I've known her a few years now and so much of her behaviour makes more and more sense the more I research Aspergers. She hates showers and brushing her teeth, & she's always wearing tighter clothes under her clothes. She also can't stand having the radio on when we're driving in the car and is always saying it's too loud - for the first time, this makes sense! Thank you!
I am about to start working with a family thats has 2 kids with autism and one with aspergers, your videos are excellent and are helping me understand your world better! Thankyou!
I have Aspergers also with the way I discribes the sensory issues as like a Computer on Turbo and overclocked at the same time. My sensory issues are touch, taste, sight, hearing, smell like with me for example I can hear the utrasonic pest repellent devices from across a street. With Sight I can see a CRT Monitor redraw. With touch I can fell the slightest thing and fell it get averagteing when I shave and fell the smallest hair. With taste I can tell which stores use the same dairy farm.
my son has a really hard time at school, very hard, he goes after one boy in particular and with all his strength to take him down, it takes a lot to stop him, i have no problems with him at home like this. at school he will stomp feet and growl and put his hands up like tiger claws. it completely overwhelms him and he screams and cries to the point of almost passing out. ive gone to school with him and still cant figure out what is setting him off. any ideas what so ever? thanks, amy

Thanks for your video! I just found out my nephew has a similar problem with sensory overloads. I never would have understood what it was if i hadn't seen these videos. It's really helping my family to understand my nephew so that we don't make things harder for him than they need to be. My family is very appreciative. I was reading a book and it was describing a kid with Aspergers and I was like, "That sounds a lot like my brother." So I looked it up and printed out a bunch of information. I told my parents and they looked into it. We are trying to get a psychiatrist to diagnose him. And I have a question: Can you like a type of food and then hate it? Do you wear ear plugs?? Just asking. I wear ear plugs and head phones CONSTANTLY, and it starts to get annoying and overwhelming, but its the only thing blocking out some noise to help me not be so overwhelmed. Thanks for this video :)
my son is diagnosed with ADHD and sensory integration difficulties. it seems that few professionals in our area of the midwest have a clue that these two diagnoses can be linked; what is your opinion on that? what has been most effective for you in managing your sensory integration difficulties? thank you for sharing your experiences!
Generally, children with SID (or SPD) see occupational therapists for intervention. In fact, a whole theory model in OT is designed specifically to address sensory integration. It is definitely worth checking out what options for OT are available in your area. Good luck!
I just wanted to thank you for sharing your life with us. My son is somewhere on the Asperger's Spectrum and has some major processing differences... your videos give me a much better understanding of how he might be feeling and why he cries almost all day long (he's only 3). Keep up the great work!
my son has this along with aspergers...he can not tell the difference between hot or cold....we have been to therapy for his face and come to find out he cant feel anything on or around his mouth ..nose or lips...he use to have food all on his face and down his clothes..it's just unreal how putting a mirror in front of him changed all this...i have always had to say wipe your mouth or face to him..now with he does it automatic...thers more ...but I can say that has been a change for the better.
I have this but only with sounds. Silverware touching plates or people chewing always makes me leave the table. I have also ran away from my class, crying, because I couldn't take the noise. And the worst is the sound carboard boxes make. I always cover my ears when there's a cardboard box around. When I was younger I could start screaming for the sounds I couldn't take but now I just usually cover my ears.
you're a really talented and pretty girl, a great inspiration to everyone of us =) of course its bad having this but just do your best in your life, that's all I can say about you and suggest that you do.....
Before I heard about this, I remember feeling super bad because I was afraid of baloons and dogs due to the noise that they caused. And everyone used to criticize me for this.
Do you have panic attacks when you look at a strangers eyes, face to face in a restaurant? Does it stop you from eating out in pubic or travelling on public transport?
Your video popped up when I signed on, Jaydy. You did an amazing job of explaining it. I feel like I understand it a lot better now. What are the marks on your face from?

Generally, children with SID (or SPD) see occupational therapists for intervention. In fact, a whole theory model in OT is designed specifically to address sensory integration. It is definitely worth checking out what options for OT are available in your area. Good luck!

Hey there,
I just wanted to thank you for sharing your life with us.

Before I heard about this, I remember feeling super bad because I was afraid of baloons and dogs due to the noise that they caused. And everyone used to criticize me for this.
Also some frequencies make me feel weird.

I noticed you were rocking backwards and forwards, did you notice you were doing that at the time? It's an Aspie trait for some us when anxious.

Do you have panic attacks when you look at a strangers eyes, face to face in a restaurant? Does it stop you from eating out in pubic or travelling on public transport?
