I noticed a difference of opinion based on some riffing Billy Gibbons was doing in the vid. Some thought his playing 'over-rated'.A firestorm of abuse promptly erupted. After many years developing his style and promoting it successfully, many people have copied him to the point that when he plays - people think he plays like someone at their local bar-and thus mistakenly think 'over-rated'.Growing up, there were a few guitarists that, when I heard them play-I knew exactly who it was.He was one.
@EcoBGreen Same effect over here. Yes, quite a few blues guitarists have looked up to Billy/copied him...but none can quite do it in the manner or proficiency that he does. That Artisan 15 is a sweet-sounding amp in that large room, no? LOL
Sorry but poor ole billy sounds like a kid tryin to learn the blues in his bedroom on a 300.00 guitar rig. Get mad all you want but you know im right!
@icystratopaul quit trolling...so, basically you are a guitar hero and would lay down your ultra fast shred licks and sit back and go, 'take that old man'...ha...i'll take Billy any day..
@glueforall Dont recall ever saying anything about shreddng? Just said billy is an overated blues guitarist, I heard he was a legend so i pulled up some youtube videos to see what the fuss was about, and after watching it i was left thinkng are you shittin me, al the fuss over a guy who sounds like a novice warming up for his high school talent show.
@ke1mc2 Easy there captain billy. Put down your cape and goggles and take a breather, I know it's tough being the billy gibbons youtube avenger but you deserve a rest after that heroic but feeble attempt at defending billys honor. Now that being said, billy gibbons is probably the most overated blues guitarist there is and this video just proves it. Like i said before, reminds me of a novice practicing in thier bedroom on cheap equipment. OOOOVVVER RAAATED!
@ke1mc2 boooring,,,,,, and find some new cuss words for your next troller, those are beyond out dated. You got to get creative when you insult or it doesnt work. I can piss someone off without using a single cuss word just like i did you, but dont you frett , [practice makes perfect and you will eventually get there. And with that i'm officially off to troll another thread. Good luck with that billy obsession....
Good job queer! You came through for me again and wrote something queer! Keep it coming icystrat....... wait strat? You play a Fender Strat? Probably not as well as you play with your little brother .........one stroke.... "Oooooh mom I'm coming " .....Idiot! Baa Daa Bump!!! Get a life pindick!
Is it me or what but the pick hand he uses is a coin I forgot what type. Youll break more strings, but your a millionaire and have guitar techs. I tried thumb picks like Johnny Winter and he has a nice Fat Tone another great of fatness is lesly West from Mountain.
@kkcops1 The coin in question would be an old Mexican peso...edges worn smooth. He hasn;t used them in some time, uses some kinda funky orange gel pick these days...check Premier Guitar online, they have a rig rundown with his tech Elwood Francis.
Just a note... I'm seeing 50's Les Pauls coming up for sale for around 12K and up. Save your money for something that may someday AGAIN be worth more than you paid for it. Good luck on your tonequest everyone.
When Billy Gibbons farts it has amazing tone! Don't assume that mere mortals can get this kind of sound out of a Les Paul and a Blackstar. Obviously Les Pauls are great guitars and Blackstar makes some very nice amps..... but you could stretch a rubber band around a shoebox and Billy Gibbons will get awesome tone out of it.
His guitar tech interview here, entitled Rig Rundown by Premier Guitar -- says that he's using ALL .007s live except for on ONE guitar, which is strung with .008s, but DETUNED! :) Just adding a little truth to the myths of those who like to argue that he uses heavier strings. Cheers.
@fullymusic He USED to employ the heavier gauge strings, years ago...but yep, that little tip from BB King persuaded him to switch to .007's. Would definitely take some time adjusting your attack to those spider's-web strings, but BFG's living proof that you ca get fat, full tone from even light strings.
Indeed a good guitar, but it isn't worth 15.000$. when compared with it's price , it sucks, but for 8.000$ it would be a very great guitar. Well, the thing that gives a meaning to a guitar is talent after all.
@TheCemgesx Hello TheCemges ! The (unsigned) guitar was sold at 7'999 $ when Gibson produced it. But tons of sons of bitches bought these guitars for re-selling for 15'000$.
So, if you see someone who re-sell it for 15k and more, please feel free to steal it. They don't deserve compassion anyway.
This video led me to getting a Blackstar Artisan 30 watt head. Oh my God is it loud. What a tone! I have a bunch of amps but I think this is my favorite. Billy rocks!
I dropped a Pearly Gates bridge pu in my Traditional, played a long snappy riff, and had to change my underwear. It is that good. Thanks Seymour Duncan.
well now, isn't that a daft question, since no one can see. Tis but only a guess, I'd say lead or middle as it sounds very trebly, but as I say only a best guess.
Wonderful stuff. I was playing earlier with my Les Paul directly through my Blackstar Artisan 15 combo with no effects just like Billy and... no I didn't sound quite like him :(
agree to some comments here, i love to see him play like this, almost more than the entire recorded output of zztop - would be great if he made a record like this.
i saw zz top recently, and the crowd was young AND old, and the place was packed. it just proves that real talent is timeless, and today's "guitar heroes" may play faster than billy, but they're not better. their speed licks will last a few years, but billy's old time blues playing will last forever.
@CliveBarnesMusic This isn't a Blackstar artisan, trust me... Billy Gibbons favourite amps are Marshalls 18 watt combos and clones of them... This could be a Retro King 18 watt combo
@MrGrooveNuts Well it looks identical from this (I'll admit not great) angle...The colour is exactly the same (I cant think of another manufacturer using this covering) and you can see the large red LED on the top panel and the dimensions to my eye look spot on, I'm sitting here looking at the side of my amp and back to this video right now ...Anyway I'm thrilled with the Blackstar it's a devine sounding thing....Take care GrooveNuts
@CliveBarnesMusic You could be right man, i did some research and the dimensions are a lot a like the amp in this video. So you're right about the amp..
Altough I find it a little weird for Billy Gibbons to play on a Blackstar, he's an icon in the bluesworld. And icons mostly plug their guitars into vintage (read: expensive) amps...
@MrGrooveNuts You never know what the situation is here, Billy could be just playing what there and maybe really hasn't a clue what he's playing. I get the feeling it isn't his personal amp..it's still sounds great though but Billy could make a biscuit tin sound great ...But hey GrooveNuts thanks for the heads up on the Retro King gear I been checking them out big time, amazing sounding amps...
@CliveBarnesMusic Thats well said and true... Yeah, the retro king videos and sound clips are amazing, i hope i play one someday... I listened to your music and i must say that i'm a big fan now, you've got a personal style and a great voice, keep up bringing great music.. I'm not really a good slide-guitar player but i'm gonna take some time to learn this amazing sounding style of playing thanks to you..
@MrGrooveNuts Wow cheers man, that means a lot, it really does. I'm itching for that Retro King 18 watt but they seem very hard to come by over here (Ireland) I've only got back into the combo market in the last two years and there are some amazing boutique builders around these days. The Blackstar Artisan range really is special though...for the price I haven't heard much to compete. Anyway give that slide a dust off and let it wail.....Take care. Clive
Clapton didn't call Rev Gibbons the bible of the the blues for nothing. This Guy is THE guitar players guitarist. That sound is the player not the guitar or amp.Billy G.could make a Winfield guitar through a carlsboro amp sound awesome.
