When you run out of rounds the bolt is locked back, when you you reload another mag all you have to do is send it home and a round is chambered.

does an m16 really get so dirty it affects the mechanics after 300 rounds? I shoot a shotgun and u can shoot 1000 or more (depending on the gun) before it gets gunked up enough you have to manually eject the hulls

@MrMcKusk Non-piston AR-15 variants tend to "shit where they eat" as someone so eloquently put it. 300 rounds with some low quality ammo could gunk it up pretty bad.

I was at Sunset Hill Firing Range in Tannersville, PA in late 1998. After shooting all day, myself and two friends managed to get an AR-15 so filthy (we put over 300 rounds through it) that the mags would no longer drop out. I'm not sure if the Magpul rubber mag pullers were invented yet, but they sure would have come in handy that day. If I might add, the gun also had to go back to Colt so that they could replace the warped gas tube and the extractor.
