  • @keano6t9 I've been obsesessed with Dublin's underground rivers and tunnnels the past while now but have yet to to walk any yet. Where are the best access points? Mail me at niall289@yahoo.ie if you'd prefer not to say. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

  • I spent today trying to work out where this goes.... diein to see it now wud love to get in dere

  • @Ickstudios Some night I'm defo goin in 4 a walk

  • @Ickstudios I'll go at like 3 in the mornin ive been in a few places u wudnt believe wer in dublin. River Podder under temple bar...

  • @keano6t9 you've peaked my interest there, what is this of which you speak?

  • @keano6t9 I've been in a cave in Lucan and Clondalkin and I wana go down under wellington quay but I'd have to get into the liffey at night when the tide is low. I checked the tide times and it's low at 5 in the mornin on the 30th of August. Check out the vid "Under Dublin".

  • @keano6t9 Love the "Under Dublin" video! Check still pics in hidden-dublin (link above)

  • Hello keton; it is used for stock transfer and very much safe! The problem is that it sends trains to Connolly (already overused and causes conflicting movements with DARTS, etc), or North Wall. It could have a benefit for passengers in that it allows services from the south and SW to access Connolly. Thanks for your comments!

  • I've heard about this tunnel before. Do you know why it is not used for regular commuter trains? Is it possibly unsafe? What with the plan for the new Dart Underground, i imagine that it will never come into regular use at this stage...waste

  • thank you

  • My pleasure - thanks for going to the trouble to let me know!

  • THERE'S A TUNNEL???

  • @DavidHiggz

There certainly is! Trains from the Kildare/Cork etc direction can bypass Heuston and travel directly to Connolly through the tunnel. The train in the vid is empty stock, unfortunately.

  • finally

  • Great posting,Ive walked this tunnel a half dozen times back in the late 70s early 80s i use to rob barrels off the guinness trains cominng out at mckee barricks the trains picked up speed you had to be fast and jump off run back pick up the barrel and leg it cos the garda always follow in a engin 10 minutes after the train wos long gone great times i miss them times.

  • do u know who makee barracks are named after,im drinking a pint of guinness now i paid 150 euro i rember u use to get them for 50

  • I can't believe they've left this only open for freight and GAA match knacker deliveries! Seems absolutely stupid to waste it.

What's CIE's real reason for not sorting out a proper Dart route linking Connolly/Drumcondra to southwest Dublin/Kildare and beyond?

I'd love to get in there and walk it on foot, just out of curiosity. I would if it wasn't illegal :D

Any chance of getting one of the few passenger rides through it ("special" events?) and filming it?

  • He he! Suggest you check "irish Railway News" for info on forthcoming tours. As far as I know, there is a ban on railtours at present by IE!!! The tunnel has always had mystique - I also wouldn't chance it these days, since it goes directly under Gardai offices in the Park!!

  • i was in that tunnel. we were on a match day special from westport to connolly. brought us right up behind hill 16.

  • Spot on! Thanks for your comment!

  • all trains going to connoly station(coming from maynooth)go past hill16

  • em this tunnel comes out the other end right at my house and only freights go down it like once every 2 weeks where was this train heading for?

  • An empty stock movement, I believe. Is there public access to see the tunnel mouth at the Cabra side? I seem to recall a lane from which you could just see the tunnel mouth.

  • There isn't actually public access but you can see the tunnell from the Old Cabra Road footbridge!

  • Many thanks RF071! Will have to check that out soon - my DV cam has a 20xlens and might get some detail. Unfortunately the portal is north facing, so little chance of decent light...

  • Can't help notice but,were the only one's up this early!Haha

  • Ah yes- the early bird gets the 071!

  • Haha yes your right there! If you had of been at platform 10 06:17 you might of seen an 071 on the Tuallamore cement!

  • Ah don;t be gregging me RF - I have stayed up all night to see 071s in the past! Have applied for a couple of jobs in Dublin, so there's an outside chance we might go back home...

  • Go back home to where?

  • To Dublin! I'm currently working in the UK but born and reared in Dublin. Presume you're Irish as well?

  • Oh sorry!Yeh well don't come home if you want to see good railway action!Stay in Britain where loco's are plentiful and haulage is heavy!

  • Hey - nothing to be sorry about! Yeah, we're very close to the East Coast main line and features regular 66s, 60s with the occasional 67, 57, 47 and even the lovely 37s! Being a GM fan like yourself I thrill to the roar of a 66, but the English enthusiasts don't *really* warm to them! I think they're still hurting after the UK loco building industry stupidly went down the tubes.

  • Thanks for your comment. It is good to see the occasional traffic coming through the tunnel and it will form a more important role in Dublin's emerging transport network in the future.

  • Liked the announcement, anymore!! the tunnel does get used
