@apsscinc Yep, and at 1:23 you can see Keith Moon's kit of The Who behind the guitarist; amazing. This had to be one hell of a show, I wish I was around then to see this live :(
Wow - I can't believe the comments!? So many people love these guys and are still fervent fans! How amazing... but I still don't get it...been surfing around uncovering alltheir performances...I guess, these guys were biting at the heels of hermans hermits, but not the stones.., c'mon. I wish I liked this, I'm more fascinated with their fans than them. this song is their best, for me. Nice job on this one, but their performance is straight to the girls -sorry, but just too much sugar for MY tea
@80sVideoLord They were not 'biting at the heels of herman's hermits'. They were tough, masculine, a bit wild, musically brilliant (unlike Herman and co) and appealed to both boys and girls. The only problem was their very Britishh tongue-in-cheek name which emphasised their 5 distinct personalities as opposed to the collective. The un-ironic US couldn't hack this - every other country seemed able to.
@mkp823 They were that great. How come they made it in a big way over 15 hits everywhere except in the U.S? Does the U.S have a monopoly on musical taste, or were the DJs there just too thick - and lacking in humor where the name was concerned - to appreciate this band's huge originality and quality?
@armoredcar3 It has nothing to do with DJs and it has more to do with personal taste. Either something grabs you or it doesn't. maybe you like these guys because they represent something to you; there's a connection. I'm fascinated by the differening tastes in music.I tried to like these guys, but being a musician ( or being an American maybe...) I don't see anything fascinating, interesting about them. That's not your fault and that's not my fault. It just is. I prefer music that I like.
@armoredcar3 You don't understand America if you think that's how it works (-ed). We'd hear stuff like this and tell the Dj's "nah- sounds silly". We just had a lot to choose from and much prefered Motown, Stax, the best of the Brit Invasion bands (we didn't stick long with Gerry, Herman, Dave Clark, etc., either, and never did latch on to Cilla, these guys, the Move, Quo, and others). Different cultures and sensibilities.
@mkp823 As you say - different cultures and sensibilities. Seems bizarre though that you, with your patently superior sensibility, are wasting so much energy dissing a band you think is shit.
@80sVideoLord You are right in a way. Some groups have a more masculine appeal (Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton) in their dazzling athletic, but not necessarily melodic, guitar techniques. Boys prefer this and back particular bands as they would a football team. Others, including DDDBM&T (and Paul MacCartney in the Beatles) rely on terrific words and melodies which certainly girls tend to like and have a broad cross-generational appeal akin to the old Music Hall stars.
@ichthipiscator If they thought their own music was good why do=idn't they let the music do the talking...to much stage stuff like ' look at me' & 'hi, everyone - I'm over here and cute and self-important' - what's with all the stupid gestures? Didn't they get attention enough? The tremelos did that a little bit, Hermits did it a little, Freddy was over the top but was comedic...these guys were doods, but playing the cheeky schoolboy angle when they should have dropped acid & rocked out.
@80sVideoLord It was the style of the time, pre-Flower Power and 1967 - The Beatles did it too - remember 'the four mopheads' shaking their hair? And Paul McCartney's winsome smile? Only the Stones refused to play the showbiz game - but that was also a calculated commercial ploy to differentiate them from the 'good boy' Beatles. And if you think of the weirdness of some of DDDBM&T's songs it's hard to imagine they didn't also drop acid.
@Ottoboy111, if you'd been around when they and the Beatles were, i doubt you'd be making such a ridiculous remark. They were unique in their time and did their own, very original thing.
They combined comedy with their music, with some theatrics thrown in here and there, a bunch of talented and entertaining guys.....shame you missed 'em.
R.I.P. Dave and long live the music and the memories!
At about 0:49 you can see Ringo's drum kit. Sad that Epstein couldn't work out a deal with ABC Tv(England) to allow them to film The Beatles on what was to be their last Live appearance onstage in Britain. The Stones nor The Who were also not filmed...very sad.
It was a mock press statement that George Harrison read on mic when the remaining three Beatles went in to EMI Studios to record "I Me Mine" on Jan. 3, 1970. John had told the other Beatles that he wanted to leave the group the previous November. Dave Dee left the other guys to pursue a solo career around the same time, in 1969. I didn't know George repeated the same quote in the "Imagine" film though.
You are wrong. They were known as one of the greatest live bands of their time and for a couple of years gave the Beatles and Stones a run for their money. Agreed, the sound balance is appalling, but that's the fault of the TV sound engineer and applied to all the bands at this NME concert.
@armoredcar3 They area bunch of blokes in mod clothes like the dave clark 5 ,unlike the dave clark 5 they didnt get a hit in the us they have some catchy melodys though there was an american group called the blokes that made only one 45 and a group called the american beatles that had to change their name
@spacepatrolman Catchy melodies and original ideas that caught on everywhere in the world except the US. Either the US has superior musical tastes, or they missed out on something really good.
@polecatcontinuum They didnt get played on the radio enough a little on an fm underground station but the djs were on strike no one to tell you what or who the records was by .
Such an exhilerating band, every song its own thing and each sounding as fresh today as when it was first recorded. Difficult to perform against that barrage from the fans, but they do a great job. Wish I'd been there.
this is the peak of ddbm&t mania in england at this point they looked like a serious threat to the popularity of the beatles and the rolling stones: notice all the girls in the audience holding the posters of ddbm&t
They were (and are) one of the greatest live bands ever, certainly the equal of the Beatles and Stones. But the sound balance on this clip has a lot to answer for.
Hey genius, (keith) have you heard any other bands from this era live before? Say, The Beatles or Rolings Stones? They were all horrible live. They were trying to play louder than all the screaming.
To KeithE4: Have you heard DDDBM&T's studio stuff?! It's WAY FUN! Catchy to the max. This song rocks. Check out "The Wreck Of The Antoinette," it's one of their best, but practically all of their songs were fantastic. It's just the live sound of this video that you're not digging!

Good grief! These guys were awful. Now I think I know who the Bay City Rollers' biggest influence was. No wonder they never had a hit in the US.
That last song just needed a rousing chorus of "S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y! Night!" Too bad it hadn't been written yet AFAIK. :-D
