Gerbils Playing In The Pet Store

can u have one gerbil alone?? i was gonna get a hamster then right before i got it my brother went to the doctor and found out he was allergic to hamsters so ive gotta switch to a gerbil even though i know NOTHING about them. every gerbil owner i know has 2 or more gerbils to keep each other company but i only want to get one. can i jsut get one?? will it be okay

@spellingprogress It's very preferable if you get a pair of gerbils, as they're social animals and get really depressed living alone. It's important to do as much research as you can before getting a new pet, so don't be afraid to find some guides online. =) You might want to look at other small pets as well and see if they are better for you than a gerbil. Good luck finding a new pet! =)

1. Too small cage

2. Way to little bedding, they can't even dig in there!

3. Wheels hurt gerbils back because of the unnatural postition they have when they run in them.

id radther have a gerbil because they can trim their own or you can buy easy things for them, and they are easier to take care of!

Yeah, looks like you were lucky! I'm not saying it goes always wrong, there's just a lot chance that it will... and I think as an animal lover most people want to avoid that :)

Gerbils natural territory is much bigger than the cage. In nature, when the group of gerbils will get too big, the gerbils will 'say' to the other gerbil: GO! if that gerbil doesn't go away, they will haunt them till death. And how we keep it, the cage is much smaller, the unwanted gerbil cannot go away and the other gerbils will haunt them till death. That's why you shouldn'have more than 2 in one cage. (same sex of course)

@4GetITKDRJ There are always exceptions. That he/she hasn't died yet, in this case, doesn't mean they are solitary. I think if your friend will buy another gerbil and he/she will match the both gerbils properly, then your friend will see the gerbil living up again. Just saying ;)

yesterday one of my two male gerbils died....it was very sad....

but tomorrow ich will buy 2 new buddies for him :)

hope they will nice to each other , but i think this wont be a problem , the two i will buy , are little babys :D

I have a very happy gerbil who came from a Petco. He's 3 years old now and going strong.

Whatever pet store you visit to look for gerbils, whether or not it's a chain store like Petco, I'd recommend looking at the condition of all the small animals they have, not just the gerbils. There are good pet stores and bad pet stores.
