  • is arabic as fractured as chinese in terms of mutual unintelligibility? for example, mandarin is understood by some 80% of chinese speakers...is it the same for arabic?

  • @lamparalaptopiaguita excellent question! I am going to talk about this issue in a video soon insha'Allah..

It depends on what Arabic you are talking about; the Quranic, the modern standard or others. Generally, standard Arabic is understood by most native speakers of the language with the exception of some of them.. So, yes, I think there are some Arabs who do not understand Arabic.

  • @lamparalaptopiaguita not to encroach on what the video poster said, but she is correct. There are different types of Arabic. Levantine Arabic (Israel, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon et cet.) is usually mutually intelligible to all Levantine Arabs. Moghrabe Arabic (Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria?, etc) with all Moghrabs, and then there are other types, Eastern -- Saudi Arabia, et al. and Egyptian Arabic, well known for movies. And then Modern Standard Arabic is used for education and business/news.

  • @lamparalaptopiaguita to answer your question, compared to Chinese it actually exhibits a real lack in mutual intelligibility, however most educated Arabs have learned MSA to an almost native level. It would be as if all educated Chinese people could speak the government mandated Chinese dialect. I don't know if that is the case with Chinese however.
